A Couple of Jaguar Pix

Recommended Posts

Rummaging through my old photographic prints, I came across these two of a Kitty in an advanced state of dismemberment. Taken some time in the early 80's well before the 'Grey Menace' enveloped the fleet.

Apologies for the quality but they were contrasty to begin with and copying them via iPhone doesn't help either, but I hope they are of use to those poor souls (like me!) who are/will be tackling the Kitty Hawk GR.1/3.

I'm sure I had a close up of the MB mk.9 seat taken at the same time. If I find it then I'll post it.

Cheers

Thanks Trevor, thought it looked familiar. Must have been air tested by Sqdn Ldr Mike Lawrence. The maddest, most laid back pilot I ever met. Some great memories, thanks again

I spent sometime looking at the first photo, trying to figure out what was 'wrong' with (and having spent quite a bit of time wandering in and out of the hangars at RAF Coltishall in a professional capacity) the image, before it dawned on me. 'GD' has obviously been dismantled and laid out for some kind of public event, given all the people milling around in the background. What threw me was the messy nature of the hangar floor with the Ejection Seat, canopy and even LOX pots all in close proximity to the aircraft. In a normal situation, these three rather sensitive and/or fragile items along with many other components, would be whisked straight off to their respective workshops to be worked on by the specialist tradesmen and not left vulnerable on the shop floor.

It's a great photo of historic significance though. I suspect any visit to the shop floor of one of the Typhoon Squadrons would reveal a hangar that is a lot neater and tidier, given the construction of the aircraft and the even more modular approach to removing components during major servicing. I would certainly place the aircraft in the early to mid-1980s. I was at 'Colt' at this time and GD was one of the aircraft I clearly remember….Several of the 54 Sqn pilots were mates of mine and one was quite chuffed to regularly get to fly this jet since the codes matched his initials !.

Tiger!

They are definitely early 80's and were taken at an air show when I was in the Merseyside Aviation Society. I was probably part of an MAS team manning our book stall and probably helped to manhandle our Fa.330 autogiro onto the display line as well.

My fading memory tells me that nearby was a sign saying 'no photographs!'
