Seems a bit petty to me. Britmodeller benefits from getting plugs on other forums. Things like this make the place less a discussion board as a personal fiefdom.

To take heat out of this, can the rule be summarised as 'No promotion of blogs/websites that result in a financial gain for the poster"?

This is the only site to which I subscribe, as I see no need to go elsewhere and I would hate for it to become "commercialised". I find it friendly/informative/funny in varying degrees and is usually my default setting.

Thanks to Mike and the Mods - keep it simple and keep it friendly!

The whole issue seems to be a swipe at Spencer. Britmodeller doesn't do videos, Spencer doesn't seem to be making money from his YouTube channel. What's the problem? Envy? Red mist because Spencer is one of the more respected modellers out there and that's casting a cloud over someone's sunshine?

Every board needs rules but this just seems to be a case of my bat and my ball.

Tbh the decision has being made you can jump up and down curse scream it wont make any difference

I applaud Mike and the team for this decision its not allowed any where else so why should MIKE allow it on what is HIS WEBPAGE

If you dont like it then dont come and visit

Ive being on here for a long time and tbh the RIPPLE this causing is minor

Bigger aggro over colours / kits / comp decisions

If the people who dont like it then start a web page feel free

Then we can come and post links to someone else work

Rant over back to a being a abnormal chimp

Funny, I've seen no mention of Spencer, what gives you that idea. So what are you saying? Just because you think he's a respected modeller he should be allowed to flag up his you tube channel at will but not anyone else. You can't have one rule for one and another one for others.

He doesn't, I'm sure of it...

Not the case at all. But we have had a spate of new members whose only reason for joining has been to promote their monetised blogs etc. This is a free site, if you owned a newspaper, would you allow free adverts from people who were making money from them?

Why mention Spencer? Because it was obviously a swipe at him. Is his YouTube channel of modelling merit? Is he making money from it? Is he competing with Britmodeller?

So links to useful resources get pulled because of what?

If you read what Mike has said, links are allowed in the signature area.

It's similar to our rules on traders.

We have a mind reader in our midst apparently. Just not a very good one. There seems to be some fury there though, that's for certain which is strange seeing as you've only seen fit to post 59 times since 2007 until this happened. I guess we'll continue to be less than we could be... I'm too ugly for video anyway :(

I didn't know we could put blog links in signatures, so I have just done it. I take it this is OK?

Sorry - missed that one, but yes. That's absolutely fine :) You can even put a banner in (there's an FAQ about the rules for that), and make it clickable. All fine :)

Spence

I think Spence may be fine with it.:coolio:

I hesitate to point out the obvious but it *is* Mike's bat, ball and tennis court, with limited recourse to the laws of England and Wales. Nothing to stop a forum site owner from just banning individuals or editing posts as they see fit without announcing rules. I'm fairly ambivalent either way but just think it is a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut and creates the feeling of a somewhat defensive and authoritarian environment... which I'm free to leave any time.

I wasn't aware there was a rule about having to have a certain number of posts before expressing an opinion.

Seems odd that a number of Spencer's threads that I was following have now all gone missing. Useful modelling content removed because of what?

Modelling with a British flavour? Orwell was British IIRC.

 well we are in a bit of a tizz tonight, aren't we? How long before you compare us with the Nazis? It's clear you've got a bug up your bum and I'm certainly not going in there to look for it, so we'll leave it at that. You are Mr Angry from Dunfermline, and I'm still Mike Williams the dictator

Lol, I'm not the one purging the board of external links to useful modelling content.

We have not, signature links are still allowed for those that are interested. What we have done is decided that posts directly enticing members away to their own web pages to look at content that they have not bothered to share here in the first instance is not on. We do not exist here for the purpose of advertising other people web pages. It's especially noticeable when looking at these sites that there are never links back to BM, nor are they ever around when people need help or it's time to put money in the site meter.

3 pages later...Its a new forum rule . We're going 'round in circles .

When was the last time a ref changed his decision because a player didn't agree?

Looks like the Mods have hit a nerve

But you have, you have deleted a number of threads Spencer posted. I think he's posted enough material to Britmodeller and promoted the hobby to given the benefit of the doubt.

Britmodeller has rather shot itself in the foot, even if it's an Airsoft round.

Or the other viewpoint is that we have removed a number (1/2 a dozen) of Spence's posts containing a couple of teaser pictures and then a link saying come and see the full build/rest of the pictures on my website but left the others in place where he shows the work in full.

What makes Spence so special that he should be given a different set of rules to any other member doing this? Are you demanding that we have a two tier system for members on here? What's the entry criteria? Post count, site donations, being thought of as a good egg by 10 or more members? To use your Orwellian comments, why is Spence a more equal pig?

And for your info, I subscribe to Spence's you tube channel, I have learnt some good stuff from there and look forward to seeing his updates as he is a cracking modeller and explains his approaches well. Certainly far better than some of the other members who have blogs. This rule has been brought because of the expotential increase in parasitic blog posting that we have noticed lately and it is here to stay.

If you need a rule, and the argument is part economic/ part subjective, why not limit such links to Gold Members who you like?

How do we know if one member uses two identities? Is there way the mods can know? IP address etc.? Its happened on another Forum I'm on, only it wasn't the same IP address. One for home and another for work only he slipped up and posted his "work" name from his home's IP. He'd been agreeing with his alter ego in an argument to support his side.

Not I. Ultimately, the value in a forum is in the perceived worth of its content to its members. If it's de facto operation diminishes that then the membership will eventually vote with their feet. So, if you're uncomfortable with moderator favoritism, how about linking this permission to the poster's "like" count?
