Ferrari 250 GTO, Shelby Cobra, Daytona Coupe, Ford GT40 in 1/8 scale

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I was searching the net for a ac cobra a long time.

But now I found a guy who produces scale replicas in 1/4 and 1/8 scale.

He got access to a SLS professional 3d printer.

And a buddy of him owns a big collection of classic cars, including a real Ferrari 250 GTO.

He made tons of pictures and measures the hole car.

For some German modeling I ask him if he can do a GTO in 1/8.

And he told me he already did one in 1/8 and 1/4 scale.

He also did a Ferrari 250TR, BMW M1, and now he is doing a Ford GT40 in 1/8 scale.

So here is his mail to me with the prices for the different options.

These prices are only made for the GTO so far. Others will be different.

Hi There,

Got some pics and prices from the GTO. made the price very sharp.

The body cost 395,-

Body with wheels are 595,- wheels from aluminium

Body with the wheels and interior with all the details in it without wires 1070,-

Body with the wheels and interior with the trunk and engine, 2250,-

Body with the wheels and interior with the trunk, engine and the whole frame 3180,-

For a complete car please give me a mail.#

I think, compared with the prices shapeways is asking for a 1/8 Body, his prices are fair.

If you have any question, just pm me and I will ask him for you.

Just a sample of the print quality.

I should receive my ordered cobra body in the next two weeks.

Than I can tell you more about the printing quality.

On the pics it looks very good.

The wall thickness is about 1mm. That's just like the real car and not to thick.

This is only a question if here are people interested.

Maybe we can a do larger order from him?

Regards Christian

It will be interesting to see what the surface finish is like.

SLS tends to be quite 'grainy' meaning the whole shell will need a high build primer (at least) and thorough sanding down.

Mind you, at the price it should be worth it.

Can you find out what material he prints with?

Some plastics print very well, but slowly 'sag' and deform after about 18 months.

The plastic used on my 1/8 Lister shell was the opposite - hard as ceramic and next to impossible to sand.

Hence the very slow progress with it.

He just told me that.

Oke, well i print in high quality SLS material
it needs primer
what about what he says about it will lost the deform of the material over the months?
If you let it clean it will happened after some month, but if you put some primer over it with a layer of paint it will keep it in tact
Best way to do that is paint it with car paint and put a clear coat over it.

Well it was always going to be a long shot haha.

Seeing as the ball park figure for a printed shell is more than half what I paid for my real one I don't think it's for me. Now a full kit in 1/24 for that price ;) hehe

1/4 scale? ...... why stop there Roy, 1/2 scale at least :D ;-).

Does he by chance have my avatar car?

Well, I hate to tell you, but YES - he DOES have your car...

You could scratch one in 1/8 scale - how brilliant would that be???

He can even do interior parts, the wheels and the tyres so a gigantic kerbside would be possible.

The 1/4 scale 250TR is a possibility later in the year for one of my previous model buyers.

He wants it for his garage as a centrepiece next to the 40 mil of cars parked there - and no, I'm not kidding.

Whoopee .........................Nooooooo!

I just don't have the skills,experience or patience to scratch;

this is as far as I got with my 1/10th Tamiya R/C version.

Jump in at the deep end.

You'll find it isn't as difficult as you imagine.

It's more about 'thinking outside the box' - no pun intended.

Part of the fun is fathoming out how to make a certain part out of the simplest thing possible.

My big C Type build is here:

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234957329-18-c-type-jaguar/

It was my first ever attempt at a scratch model of ANY sort.

I can hardly believe it was less than three years ago.

GIVE IT A TRY...

Now if the cost of printing a shell for my Alfa was proportionate to the respective values

of my car and the GTO, I would jump in :D

but the idea of spending a relatively large amount of money just to watch the shell sag before I get the

confidence not to make a disappointing job of priming/sanding/painting it, needs some careful thought.

ETA a gratuitous picture of my 1:1 car in the pits at Donington with the car I would like to change my white Pocher Muletto into.image001.jpg

Yes it's 1/8 scale.

I am not sure how I will created the engine.

Maybe I buy the resin engine he offers.

Maybe I use the engine from the de agostini mustang even when it's a engine with less cubic inch.

Or the one from TDR, or my buddy who made my Lancia must print them for me.

I don't know what I will do yet.

But I got options, and that's good.

I would need that engine for at least four cars.

The cobra, mustang, GT40 and maybe for a Daytona Coupe.

What du you think?
