Dornier Do17z - Airfix 1/72 New Tool

Recommended Posts

My next build is the Airfix new tool Dornier Do17z:

OOB (aha ha ha) to the 'A' scheme, 8./Kampfgeschwader 77, Laon/Couvron, Northern France, July 1940 so it can be hung with the BoB completions from the GB earlier in the year.

Peewit (or other) masks essential for this I think. Looking at the box art I like the panel line shading... :hmmm:

The crew are already done on a recent production line and safely (I hope) in a zip lock. Arms akimbo.

The white blobs on their bottoms are from where they were stuck on sticks for painting. Honest.

First job is to decide how much to assemble before spraying the internals.

Crikey, what a lot of parts.

I shall be standing on the shoulders of giants for this and checking Jaime and Stew's great builds for tips and potential pitfalls.

(Edit: and Phil's build here)

Right, I'll get on with it!

I'm here!! :bye::popcorn:

I started this one when it first came out, but it's yet another that awaits me actually being able to do some muddling again. I found some of the fit very tight, & really struggled to work out how the crew members seats behind the pilot were supposed to fit to the fuselage, eventually bodging them in somehow. I await you showing me how it should be done Ced!

Great seeing you starting this one, Ced!

Mine's been on hold since last year. I'm afraid I got overwhelmed with too many simultaneous builds (not to mention the problems found with my kit's wings and canopies, which you were very kind to help) and then my German lessons and continuous tests since November left me completely short of time for modelling. Hopefully I'll be freer from next week on (still another German test to do this coming Thursday...).

Looking forward to your progress :)

Cheers

Jaime

Thanks Keith and welcome! Ah, Airfix new tools... I sometimes think they've allowed for wear on the molds... I'll watch out!

Thanks Jaime and welcome! Good luck with the German. "...continuous tests since November"? Crikey! I will suppress my instinct to comment on Germanic discipline! We've given up in England IMHO - everyone's a winner :)

Hi Stu and welcome. "... disaster last summer"? Gulp. I'll have a search for it...

No need to fear, wasn't the kit, rather the numpty who painted it

Yummo! Tasty! Lots and lots of parts. I still kick myself for not acquiring the Classic Airframes (1/48) 17z went it came out. CA are now, sadly, defunct. The moulds must be somewhere around, you'ld think. The Airfix kit looks like a much more attractive alternative in any case, even if in Microsope scale (yes, I know it's not 1/144 or 1/350, gasp!).

Don't go for the Peewit masks! You know what happend last time! Get an Eduard set or similar. You know you want to. Now, look carefully at this watch that I'm holding in font of you, now...you will...

Oh bother, you already got the Peewit set. Oh well, look carefully at this watch again...

I'm in :) I have two old tool Airfix under the bench and one RS 'E' in the stash. The latter looks difficult. This one looks good on the sprues, crikey what a lot of bits!

Good luck with it Ced,

I too have one of these lurking in the stash along with an RS E offering and the recent ICM Z10 offering so will be watching with interest.

Thanks Duncan and welcome!

Ah, OK, thanks Stu.

Er, g'day. Munch munch munch...

Hi Alex. I'm afraid I bought the masks for his and the Stuka at the same time. I've just applied one set and they seem less spongy than the Stuka ones; perhaps I just got a duff set on that - fingers crossed.

I'm in... your build rate makes me feel even slower!

Thanks Leon and welcome!

Hi Ced,

I am getting rather fond of these German twins! Mind if I tag along?

Rob

Hi Rob, pleased to have you here of course!

Hi Tony, thanks!

Despite my overwhelming interest in Spitfires, I'm a little disappointed that you're not doing another one, I shall be tagging along.

Hi Simon. I still have three Spitfires in the stash and another on the way courtesy of my Flying Hours - they will be built!

Still having trouble starting this one but I did get the clear parts off the sprue for masking.

I masked the main canopy and then the mojo ran out... must be this heat... 25o and I'm not used to it yet. Then when I get used to it summer will be over and I can start moaning about the cold.

Oh the joy of being English!

In that case, I forgive you. You may proceed, with my blessing.

Hi Ced,

I'll be watching too. I have this kit in the stash and it looks a bit "faffy" to me. I look forward to any tips you can provide.

Regards

Martin

Thanks Simon :) While you're waiting, what kit should I use for a 'just pink' Spitfire? Can I use the remaining Pavla bits? Thanks in advance.

Hi Martin and welcome!

"Faffy" is the [polite] word for it.

For a start, steps 1-4 use five parts from three frames. I've put my usual tape on these with big letters on to help find them in the box.

The first two steps put this frame together and, if you want the pedals to be parallel, the bottom of the frame is at an angle, hopefully to assist the fit to the fuselage (hopefully):

Step 3 requires an eeny meeny miney mo (gosh, that was hard to type with auto-correct changing everything) as there's an option of two seats and no guidance. Stew was building two kits and used one of each so I've gone with Jaime's choice of the nice round one. The instructions are vague and there's no locating pins ' lugs, but it goes BETWEEN the supports. I've tried to replicate the position of the seat to match the instructions but I think this is impossible:

26919537353_686371ccba.jpg

Then, if your going to take a close up photograph of it, you need to spend ages cleaning up the control column, remembering a positive chant of "it's NOT going to snap" all the time:

27429113742_4119c36f5d.jpg

You're going to need tweezers. Lots of them (well OK, two pairs)

Then you should fit the pilot. He's the one with the glasses (nope, none of those) with his hand pointing down. None of those either. There are two pairs of figures, thin slouchy ones and fat sitty up ones. Right you lot, which of you is 'D30'?

27493576576_e1cf9243ed.jpg

"No comment" eh? Typical. I think one of the thin slouchy ones is self-selecting - no way will the sitty up one fit in the seat:

27455964471_c1249960a8.jpg

That's me done. I'm sure it'll all fit...

Is the ICM 1/48th one no good Alex? I had the CA one but sold it on a few years back thinking it was one I'd never get around to.

If you want to make a pink PR1G, any Mk1 is a good starting point and you can use the Pavla bits (the seat with armour, fuel tank and canopy with bulges (although it had an armoured windscreen so you'll either need to chop up the kit canopy or get a replacement vac-form, (Pavla do some)).

There are several well-known photos of a PR1G used by 140 Squadron, one is in this thread: http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234953727-spitfire-pr1g-prvii/

Hi Ced,

Good start on the kit! The cockpit has lots of detail out of the box but everything is tiny and a lot of patience is in order :)

Cheers

Thanks Simon - perfect! I think that will be my next build (can't wait!).

Ah - thank you Keith! You understood my elliptical request. Actually, it wasn't really, but I'm grateful to have the heads-up. I'll go looking.

I happen to really like ICM kits, having nine or so Spitfire Mk IX/VIII/XVI variants in my collection. Many with RAF pilots, ground personnel and dog(s). I'm saving 'em up - while I slog away (not very much) on the Pavla Seafire.

Cheers,

Alex.
