Modelsvit 1/72 Mirage III V-01

Recommended Posts

I have been commissioned to build this for a chap and made a start the other night. This is my first build of a low run kit so am experiencing the pleasure that come with such a run......

1.jpg

2.jpg

Seat is decent enough and there will be PE to go on here once painted.

3.jpg

An awful design of the vertical stab, the gap will need filling and carefully sanding back to look anywhere near reasonable.

4.jpg

5.jpg

One upper lift engine built (minus compressor blades underneath) and every part of this needed trimming in order to fit.

6.jpg

Lower lift fans, again every keyed part needed trimming.....

7.jpg

Lower lift fan guides need completely removing from the lower wing area in order to fit......

8.jpg

Lots of removed plastic from just assembling the fan parts.

9.jpg

Main wheel housings, yep, more trimming......

10.jpg

Assembled.

11.jpg

I suspect that this will push me the more I do but time will tell.....

Wish me luck.......

Phil, welcome to the wonderful world of Modelsvit and Amodel kit building.

It's very character forming - so persevere with it and you'll end up with an unusual model that will attract comments wherever it is displayed.

Or..... wait until Tamiya or Hasegawa produce kits of these subjects ........

I suppose it depends on what you regard as 'fun' :banghead:

I've managed to survive building a few.....

Tu-91 Boot :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/model_tu-91.html

Tu-22KD Blinder :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/model_tu-22.html

Bartini VVA-14 :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/model_vva-14_modelsvit.html

MiG E-150 :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/model_e-150.html

An-124 :- http://www.flankers-site.co.uk/modl_an-124.html

..... and I'm still here to tell the tale.

They just require a bit of old-fashioned modelling - and no-one else is going to kit them - so they are really the best kits of their subjects currently available.

Ken - your Tu-22 is an absolute work of art. The actual aircraft is almost something from science fiction. I was thinking of buying that actual kit but am more than happy to leave it on the shelf now.....!!! I will just look at yours when I feel then need...!!

A little bit more progress last night.

Seat about 80% finished, need to add some more PE and buckle detail to the straps etc:

Lift fans taking shape:

14.jpg

Some nice PE for the flame holder. I have left this unpainted as it gives some nice contrast looking down into the exhaust pipe:

Cheers all,

Some more progress from last night.

I'm calling the seat finished:

Lift fans and main U/C bays:

Upper lift fan housings in place:

An example of yet more poor fitment of this kit, rear fuselage okay at the top:

20.jpg

Bottom will need some work just to get the thing to fit flush.....

Cheers all,

Phil

Oh wow, when was this last update....????

This kit is pushing me to the limit with the amount of work required.  It would of been quicker to get a solid block of plastic and whittle it away to make a Mirage....!!

Anyhoo, on we go.....

Wings joined to fuselage - this didn't fit at all well and needed parts trimming and then gluing in stages to get a relatively decent join.

22.jpg

23.jpg

Even then there was a big step and gap that has needed filler and now superglue.....

24.jpg

Same is true for the rear of the fuse.

25.jpg

Oh and the intakes.....

26.jpg

I am just about at the primer, check and re-scribing stage.

Having a big push to get this finished and off the bench now.

Lift fan upper door housings prior to clean up and install:

All 4 installed:

31.jpg

32.jpg

A plastic frame sits on top of the extended door things (!!!) and this PE needs delicately bending into the correct shape and then fitting on!!:

Extensive fillers, superglue and sanding....!!!

Initial coat of primer applied to see how its all looking and I must say that I am quite pleased so far, especially around the forward intakes.

I have applied some Mr Dissolved Putty into the areas needing additional work and once fully dry and hardened will be sanded back.

I can actually see a light at the end of the tunnel now...

After a very long break, the wonderful smells of model making are once again in the air.  Put some colour on the fuselage last night to highlight any flaws, panel lines that need re-scribing etc. and there are a few....!!!  I will spend tonight tidying those up ready for the proper paint job.  The aircraft is a patchwork of different colours and shades - going to be a PITA.....

Back into the swing of things now!!

The first coat of primer identified the areas that needed additional work.  I have now re-scribed some missing panels - they just need a little tidy up and then I will be hitting it with some paint!!

38.jpg

39.jpg

40.jpg

There was a massive gap and step here - very happy with how it has turned out:

41.jpg

I WILL beat this kit.....!!

I had a great Easter Monday to give some proper time to this kit, got loads done and here she is as of this morning.

Not only is the actual build overly complicated; the actual paint application has been a challenge too.....!!

Fascinating; I had no idea this kit existed until a couple of days ago when I found something about it by accident on 'the Internets'. And here is one well under way -excellent progress indeed, but the experience has sort of informed my purchase decision.

I do like that seat, though...and the rest of it is looking really good...GAAAHHH!

I keep chipping away at this when I find some spare time - a bit more added from the weekend.

47.jpg

48.jpg

I did want the main U/C doors closed but they wouldn't fit due to the design of the kit - the support brace for the main gear is in the way......

49.jpg

50.jpg

51.jpg

52.jpg

The seat may also need some attention to fit in the pit properly.....

With pretty much all of the main painting jobs completed it was time to move onto the area of the main lift engines.

54.jpg

The kit provided a basic plastic covering and also some photo etch that would need carefully bending into shape...!!

55.jpg

56.jpg

The PE needs mounting to a plastic frame first:

57.jpg

it also needs a slight curve putting into it:

58.jpg

59.jpg

Each of the louvres needed carefully bending into place:

60.jpg

Mounted to the plastic frame using superglue:

61.jpg

The finished effect is fantastic:

62.jpg

There is no comparison between the plastic and PE parts:

Finally ready for some decals:

Cheers all,
