I shall start with the Amodel AR-2 then make a few friends using the Zvezda LA-5 and Mig-3 kits and start off with a Academy p-39.

So to start with the P-39

Fuselage halves painted along with the pit and seats etc.

Adding a bit of nose weight for this little fighter before closing up the sides. But before that a little bit of colour is required.

Wow! Fantastic choice of aircraft. The Amodel AR-2 has a lot of pieces and detail, it's in my stash but I've never seen it built!

Looking forwards to this.

Best regards

Tony

Excellent choice of subjects. I've built the Academy P-39, I have the Ar-2, and I'm just finishing up a new-mould KP La-5FN (although I'm doing it in post-war Czechoslovakian markings). The MiG-3 I have as a ready-made model, Hobby Boss I believe. Best of luck on your builds, and hopefully you'll be able to preserve some of the amazing surface detail on that Ar-2!

Regards,

Jason

Thanks for the comments, I do build quickly in periods and I'm at that period now. Just need to sign up for the 80's cold war GB, which I have an AC in mind. I might even add to this little lot as I do like a ruski aircraft.

He's going to have these finished by tonight, I can tell :D

Good luck with all that - you plan on keeping busy for the next couple of months, don't you!

John

Yeah - I guess I was wrong! And here I am still faffing with the cockpit on my Yak-1b! That's not because it's going to be especially detailed, either - I just hate doing cockpits. I want to get the fuselage halves joined so I can get to the fun part...

Stroll on, most of us can't finish one kit and you are going to finish 4 !

If you are reading this "Speedman" you may at last have a rival

Good luck with the builds, really looking forward to following such iconic aircraft builds

Cheers Pat

Apologies guys, what started out to be a quick state, stalled but pleased to know they are back on track and what an update I have for you!

So we left he builds in a bit of disarray so here's update 1

I made a start on the AR-2 with a bit of silver dope to paint the wheel wells.

29401247551_7fca64a791_b.jpgDSC_0014 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Fuselages halves painted in grey I think I used hu145 or 140.

29401252781_b94c5ab283_b.jpgDSC_0009 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

The cockpit got assembled and painted

28856522804_22257aa4fd_b.jpgDSC_0011 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

As did the rest of the interior.

28856523654_89a12316e0_b.jpgDSC_0010 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Then the problems started. Warning the fit of the fuselage is not great and clamps are required!

28859081183_b58e6f2e3c_b.jpgDSC_0012 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Did I mention filler! This will be your friend on this build. Straight down the middle all the way around.

29401247231_b8115d7212_b.jpgDSC_0013 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Whilst I had the filler out, the Mig got her portion

28859079963_eb29473623_b.jpgDSC_0001 (1) by stuart wellard, on Flickr

29446846906_8f66f988af_b.jpgDSC_0002 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

And whilst that was all drying the La5 got its turn in the queue with the pit assembled and painted.

29481132515_6a55ce62ab_b.jpgDSC_0007 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

And the way the kit goes together you can close up the fuselage and assemble the wings without the pit needing to be in place.

Update 2 for today

Right the Ar-2's wings had some attention. Soft plastic this kit and the join well less than desirable that's for sure, a bit of sanding down, shaping the wings and leading edges need some treatment later on.

29447181066_0700a26939_b.jpgDSC_0006 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Surprisingly the join of the wing to the fuselage is very ver good and no filler required just some Tamiya cement!

29447180736_a15c0f53f0_b.jpgDSC_0007 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Well after a good pic a bad pic showing the nice join of the nacelle to the wing. Its filler time.

29481448855_6088f589f7_b.jpgDSC_0008 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Bit more filler under the belly

29401535691_285f7c1510_b.jpgDSC_0009 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Now imo the best primer on the market, self levelling and hids those imperfections!

29481447295_562aa57313_b.jpgDSC_0010 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Primer on! Wonderful stuff this, which showed areas needing a little bit more attention.

29481459355_724b28c2ab_b.jpgDSC_0011 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

29481458555_fedb009ea4_b.jpgDSC_0012 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Sanded and then hu76 airbrushed on.

29447184876_d846a84868_b.jpgDSC_0013 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Underside X202 RLM65 on.

28856855384_cbeb6b25f3_b.jpgDSC_0015 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Canopy part for the top half painted free hand.

29401536951_09e23620ee_b.jpgDSC_0016 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

And as she sits at the moment, canopies fitted which aren't a great fit but some crystal clear does the job.

Great progress Stuart. The AR - 2 looks superb . Is it an OOB colour scheme or another?

Amodel kits often seem to need filler, but they build up into very nice models with the kind of care and patience you've put in here :).

Keep up the good work, a nice little squadron forming here :thumbsup2:!

Best regards

Tony

OOB colour scheme. I may add the white paint camo, undecided yet, but you get 4 schemes in the box.

Thanks Stuart, it's a nice scheme, I especially like the shade of green. 4 different schemes OOB is superb on the part of Amodel.

Ok its deadline day so an update and onto the finishing straight!

The AR-2 is on her wheels and a coat of humbrol clear applied.

29436247623_170f781bcc_b.jpgDSC_0022 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

The mig has had the same treatment and decals applied

29436247383_b9a62de69c_b.jpgDSC_0023 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

The La-5 has the exhaust heat transfer plates masked ready for airbrushing using xtreme metals

29768954280_87eac5b625_b.jpgDSC_0024 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Aluminium applied

29949708962_59e9de4cf8_b.jpgDSC_0025 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

The P-39, well I lost one of the main gun ports so I fabricated ones from tube.

29979783941_06ca2cc833_b.jpgDSC_0030 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Coat of clear applied with spinner affixed, along with red hub

29768953310_32ed44a790_b.jpgDSC_0031 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

AR-2's decals applied

29979794361_be45d99f2d_b.jpgDSC_0032 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Along with some exhaust staining using tamiya smoke

29435572214_2636268d4b_b.jpgDSC_0033 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

And a finshing shot will do mre later but ive got a bit of a crisis with the other three.

29768959220_99d152c446_b.jpgDSC_0034 by stuart wellard, on Flickr

Now I no we shouldn't try something new but I went to the Rochester models and Railways shop and saw Humbrol Clear MATT in a bottle so I thought id try it and give it a go. My usual matt finish is Klear and Tamika flat base mix which has worked very well over the years.  Thinking that this would be the same but in an acrylic form, I applied this via airbrush and to my horror this was a result after 15 mins. The AR-2 didn't get the same treatment ad I had used my usual mix as it was flattened earlier in the week.  So here is the horror!!!!!!

This has been well and truly shaken, thinned and airbrushed over Humbrol enamels which is what Humbrol recommend.

Now if I wanted a snowy look I would have asked for it and perhaps I could leave as is and leave them as being a period shot but surely this product shouldn't do what it has done, should it? I have just done a test run on the la-5 with spraying a coat of clear over it and the whiteness has gone. So perhaps you use the matt first then coat with Clear? No mention on the website or any further youtube videos as they did with Clear one.

Hi HT

Im really sorry about the paintwork did you have to repaint the 3 of them, or fingers crossed come up with another option?

regards Pat

Hi Pat, yes unfortunately. all painting has now been completed just got to do some declining now as the multi layers of the clear and clear matt seem to have bubbled the Zvesda decals.  The Academy decals for the p-39 are fine so was just paintwork.  Will post the final pics hopefully tonight/tomorrow.
