SJLR_1 Posted May 28, 2016 Share Posted May 28, 2016 Hello all. Well, as they say, a picture paints a thousand words, and since I can't think of any words, I'll start with pictures..... Base plan with makeshift road... Probably use some sort of putty to smooth out cardboard. Thinking of putting PVA glue with fine sand for bitumen. I dunno how accurate that would be, but eh... With panther and figures for a test fit. Ground work will be painted a different colour, it was just left over from a desert base, so I used it More info on the panther will be posted when it is finished 100%, will be up in AFV RFI. The plan is to have a dead hedge behind the panther, some ruined building or equipment near the figures. Stuff I was going to use for a dead hedge. Dead grass btw. Stuff I was going to use a grass. PVA should do for fixing of the bitumen, and I use thin CA for fixing 'grass'. Just apply the CA to areas you want covered and sprinkle on your grass. You might also like to try applying CA to the ground then pressing on cotton wool balls, let it set then pull and scrape off the cotton wool with a dining fork/knife/scalpel. This leaves strands and tufts behind which you can stain green. I used the technique in my 'Lost in France' dio WIP and it really added some variation to the scene. Badder Thanks Badder, I will definitely utilize some of those ideas!! Also, what I forgot to mention is it's 1/72 scale; figures are airfix, Panther is Dragon. Smoothed out the edges of the road with some.. err.. stuff, waited for it to dry then wend over some of it with Mr Surfacer. After that I painted over it with some darker paint. You can see it here with figures and Panther. Panther is also in the AFV RFI section if you want to have a look at it also a close up of the figures: Now, for that shed/building. Found some nice Popsicle sticks which are a lot thinner than you would normally find. Then I cut them with some sharp scissors, and bent them to make a skeleton for the building. For scale: Here it is dry-fitted in place with some white-tac. I will clad the roof with more butchered sticks, and think about having open sides or cladding them too... h'm! Maybe I should make it a bit longer too? decisions... Also will add to the name 'Panther on the Prowl' when it's done. Hi RJE, I am planning to make a small barn, so I will clad it with more sticks, paint it a grey-ish colour and work out how to make the shingles on the roof..... When finished I will give it a light grey wash to make it look like stuff I see in photos. I'm feeling lazy now so I won't type in everything about it, but if you really want to I can say. Planning to put this ladder inside just for a bit of interest. Managed to misplace the wheel though A cart would look awesome, though I don't have any clue how to make/obtain one.... Apologies for picture quality by the way Just a couple pics of the back and sides. Note the still wet glue! Making the door: cut a few small pieces of Popsicle stick and put them in place, then added some PVA and let dry overnight. Also splintered some of the wood to make it look as if it's been 'unofficially' opened! Next time: how to make a shingled roof!?!? Apoligies for some of the pictures, as part of these were taken at night. I added the triangle things to go under the roof, progress shown below. Measured the shape, then stuck tape along the back, and cut it out with some sharp scissors. Result is also below. I painted a little path coming from the door of the shed, and with that paint on my brush I experiment with dirt stuck to the side of the shed; kicked up by the rain! Now, for that road! Made a mix of 30% PVA to 70% water and pasted that in sections along the road, sprinkling some dirt on as I went along. It worked! I used an older glue bottle, and look at that plug of dried glue at the top!!! And left over glue! With all that glue left over, I decided to make a start on the grass. Nothing new here, just pasted the glue in sections and sprinkled my 'grass stuff' on. I think it looks great! I also expected more to come of when I shook off the excess. Then I painted the road with some watered down Hu 33 acrylic. I find this stuff really useful!! Also painted the shed with some watered down Hu 64, and smeared a bit with a wet finger. I think it looks good, but would it look better just grey overall?? Also you can see I am experimenting with some moss effect! Phew! It looks like a diorama now! Next up: dead hedge (is it really necessary?) Badder's grass technique, dry brushing the road with some grey, and that roof! argh! how do I make shingles? I have a backup plan, which is just to cover the roof with more sticks, but something more 'exotic' would look cool. I have a deadline for this (24th June) so I will have to use the backup plane if I (or you ) can't come up with anything else!
