Shaun 13
Hi all, this one has probably been asked hundreds of times before, but here goes again. Does any one know where i can get a set of 1/72 flush exhausts for the prototype spitfre. I tried making them my self umpteen times but they always look wrong. Any pointers would be appreciated. Cheers
Rick Brown
Maybe like this? Decals. http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234967333-172nd-spitfire-k5054-silk-purse-out-of-a-sows-ear/?hl=k5054 Rick.
72modeler
Shaun 13, I have also been mulling this over for quite some time, as I would love to build K5054 as well in 1/72, but those flush exhaust stacks have been one big reason I haven't moved forward with the project. I have seen some builds that used black decal stock in the shape of the exhaust ports, which IMHO, look OK from a distance. I have also seen a few instances where the builder drilled out the ports, but getting all 12 ports lined up evenly and uniform in size and shape was not accomplished very well. I have been giving thought to making up a very thin rectangular plasticard panel that would fit into the exhaust area and using a length of thin brass tubing carefully shaped into an oval to act like a punch to cut out each exhaust port, and then gluing the panel in place. Using the same homemade punch to make decal exhaust ports might also work in 1/72 scale. It sure would be nice if one of the aftermarket people would make an etched panel with the ports cut out, to simply glue into place- an instrument panel more representative of the prototype could also be included; probably would be popular with the 1/48 modelers as well. That's as far as my thinking takes me- maybe some other builder can come up with a simpler method. Then you just have to figure out the actual color blue-grey it was painted and whether or not the wing panels were lapped, scribed, or puttied and painted over! (Nobody ever said model-building was easy!) Good luck! Mike
Shaun 13
Decals, i never thought of that one. Thank you for the idea. Nice k5052 rick. Art and engineering in one. Thank you both.
John_W
I am curently building a "phase 3" K5054. Modified windscreen with framimg and "cigar" exhasts and is painted French Grey instead of the much disputed blue. The exhausts are spares from the Arifix Mk1 Hurricane, decals from Hannants. The wooksta V2.0
John Adams *might* have some of his Spitfire Prototype sets still left, although it was intended for the old tool Airfix mk Ia. A quick and polite PM to JohnAero on here should get you an answer.
NPL
If you go for it, this kit could save you a lot of trouble: Czech Master Resin CMR1123. Available from Hannant. It is not cheap but includes decals.

A quick and polite PM to JohnAero on here should get you an answer. I built my attempt at the prototype using the Aeroclub set on the newer tool Mk1a. Cant remember there being too much, if any, fettling to get the exhausts, or any other bits to fit. Arabest, Geoff.
Scratchbuilder
I too am making a First flight Spitfire (in 1/48th scale from a new Airfix Mk 1), but not that sickly blue thing. When I say first, I mean first. Mine has clinker built (to use a boat term ) wings, polished ally engine cowl and leading edges against a zinc chromate finish, or will anyway. I made one from a white metal kit in 1/72nd years ago, but when my father-in-law died his widow dumped all the models I'd made him. Seems to be a female gene thing. I also made a photographer and a plate camera on a tripod as if the local paper were recording the event. I really must finish it all. I seem to recall putting the very different prototype IP and seat system in a jar somewhere........ Martin
Don McIntyre
Sickly Blue? I used the Paragon conversion on the Tamiya Spitfire I. I did have to use an Aeroclub prop as I'd lost the Paragon unit. I used Ventura Decals, and she was painted using Xtracolour RLM 76. Scratchbuilder
Nice job, Don. I just don't like the blue-ish colour and it ain't the first flight, which is all I'm interested in. I prefer to go no further into its military history. I don't do cow poo cammo or guns on my kites. I am only interested in their aesthetics. k5054nz
Much younger Me used the old Airfix Mk.I with an Aeroclub conversion set (my first ever aftermarket set) with Tasman decals: http://www.modelingmadness.com/review/preww2/gb/yatesspit.htm
