1/72 Airfix Spitfire MkI, 19 Squadron, October 1938

Recommended Posts

19 Squadron, RAF, were the first unit to receive the Spitfire and subject of possibly the most famous photo of Spitfires (you know the one I mean).

I shall be using the Airfix MkI(early)/ MkII boxing.

and Iliad Design decals.

I've made a start, painting the interior and various bits and bobs.

The black is good old Humbrol 33, used as a undercoat for Tamiya aluminium.

I've just realised that I haven't removed the the ejector marks from the cockpit, I better do that (although no-one will see them when it's closed-up, I'll know their there). Apologies for the variable quality of the photos, they were taken at 6:30am this morning and I hadn't woken-up properly (or drunk quite enough tea to operate properly).

(Edited to correct the topic title... I managed to spell Airfix incorrectly(!))

If you're doing 'White 19', that's the very one I'm working on. Good luck with the build (not that's it's a hard one - a very nice little kit).

Regards,

Jason

Some more work. Apologies for the poor quality photos, I've drunk too much tea.

Sovereign Hobby's Colourcoats RAF Interior Green, Tamiya Flat Aluminium (over the Humbrol 33 base) and Tamiya Matt Black, to pick-out detail that'll not be seen again).

Sticky-out bits at the back. Notice that I've, sensibly, marked the elevators port & starboard.

More stuff for the cockpit, including the seat. I've filled and sanded the ribbed detail on the seat as it would have been made of metal and I assume wouldn't have had the padding.

(I'm quite impressed that I manged to get the paint lid almost perfectly in focus.)

Here's a little tune about tea, my favourite tipple.

Great start, great photos and a great clip :)

Thanks, Ced. 'Fighting Trousers' is worth checking out, although you do need to have a working knowledge of Chap Hop and know who Mr B is to understand it.

I've been away for a couple of days, in Oxford for the wife's birthday. Done a little bit of work last night and this morning, they won't be any more for a couple of days as the birthday celebrations continue into the weekend.

Here's where I've got to.

Joined the fuselage sides and inserted the cockpit bits:

Added the rudder actuator:

Got the wings ready to attach to the fuselage:

Wings joined, and taped to ensure diherdal, and elevators added.

One thing I did on mine was to scribe the top and bottom of the trim tab on the rudder. You might just be able to make it out in this picture.

I can't quite see what you did (but I am looking at the photo on a phone). Did you cut it and bend it a little, to make it look like the rudder has been trimmed?

Not quite. There is no line on either the top or the bottom of the tab so I simply scribed across on both sides. I would never have noticed if a fellow BMer hadn't pointed it out to me. Once you see it it's really obvious.

Thanks for pointing it out, I noticed it on closer examination.

That's two easy detailing things in the Beard Airfix Spitfire manual.

I'm so glad I found this thread before you got your Spitfire finished mate - though perhaps only just, at the rate you are progressing... mind if I sit in? :)

Cheers,

Stew

Glad to have you aboard, Stew. Pull up a chair, there's still a way to go.

Less done today than I would've liked due to my wife's birthday celebrations in Ramsgate, starting with Belgian beer at about 2pm and ending in a cocktail bar, resulting in me lying around the house eating biscuits (chocolate malted milk, since you ask) in honour of National Biscuit Day.

Anyway, I manged to put the first coat of Humbrol 30 on so not that much to see.

I doubt I'll get much done tomorrow as I'm visiting a friend who had a motorcycle accident.

As predicted, I didn't do too much today but my friend who'd had a motorcycle accident wasn't to blame (I only stayed long enough to give him a Tamiya M4 Sherman), it was a couple of pints of Landlord and the best part of a bottle of Bordeaux with lunch that did it.

Anyway, I have got some Sovereign Hobbies dark green on. I'll check how bad it is when I'm a little more sober.

The more observant among you will notice I've done the yellow bits on the propeller. I'll be visiting the LMS to stock-up on Spitfires and paint tomorrow but hope to get another coat of green on, after sorting-out the mistakes I've made today.

(Edited to correct spelling.)
