Project Dirty Hunter

Recommended Posts

Something I've been working on when I get chance, seeing as the 32nd Sabre is still missing parts from Kinetic, the Alcock & Brown phantom has stalled due to the decals self destructing, I've had this on the go to keep me ticking over.

Going to be OOB apart from a master model pitot.

Comparison between a 32nd and a 48th scale Hunter -

A mod I've put on, first photo shows what it comes as with the kit.

Hand painted the IP, No decals used here

Rest of the cockpit finished.

Some detail was added to the flight stick as it was a bit bland and shapeless before.

Started on a weathered base for the underside LAG

Then made a start on the top surface Grey. I've got some references that show some really beat up Hunters, so that's what I'm working towards.

Trying to throw half an hour or so at a time for now, so it's a slow burner. Should be a good first 32nd though!

Verrrry nice !……..I love the cockpit……really looking forward to following this……only wish Revell would 'downsize' the kit to 1:48….and throw in a two-seat T.7/8 !

They're very very nice and they're so cheap as well on eBay, actually cheaper to buy one of these than a 48th I think! Goes together better as well, the fuselage to wing root joint is outstanding work by Revell.

Love a Hunter and this looks really nice the cockpit looks great will look forward to seeing this progress , I heard nothing but praise for the Revell 1/32 boxing so might have to invest in one.

Looking tasty....gotta love a Hunter! One point about Hunter's with LACG underneath, the upper Dark Green and Dark Sea Grey would normally wrap under the wing leading edge by a couple of inches. Can't really tell from your pic' if you've one this or not.

Who's markings are you doing it in?

Yeah, I've done the wrap around Bill, on the wings and stabs. I'll take some photos of the underside in a bit, I just don't want to flip it whilst the topside is still curing! I've been a tiny bit lazy with those and not done much mottling with them though!

I'm gonna be using the Revell markings for 1 Sqdrn, no one seems to do any decals for a LAG Hunter and they're the dirty ones. The photos I can find tend to show the earlier ones as being cleaner. Plan is to spray the roundels on, rather than find decals for the later 2 tone roundel as opposed to the 3 colour one.

Just for you Bill, here's a shot of the underside...

I also made up some masks out of Tamiya tape for the wing roundels. Not sure on the red at the moment, don't know if it's too dark. I think it'll be a case of letting the clear coat dry and making a decision then. I also mixed the insignia colour by eye as I can't find an our the bottle match. Just used the Revell decals to compare to.

Only problem now is I don't think my circle cutter goes small enough for the fuselage and underwing roundels! I couldn't find the correct size for these and the kit ones looked a bit large, so I went with 38mmØ for the blue and 19mmØ for the red.

I did mine in 54Sqn markings many moons ago......Xtradecal did a sheet once upon a time, it may still be available.

Regarding 1Sqn., they relinquished their Hunters for Harrier's in 1969. Red/blue tactical markings didn't come in to use until 1972-ish....

In fact by the time these markings changes came into force, Hunters would have been relegated to second line duties, and squadron markings....reserve/shadow squadrons used were 79, 234 and 63. Of course 45 Sqn and 58 Sqn used Hunters to train future Jaguar pilots in ground attack tactics. These aircraft were well battered and wore red/blue markings. Decals were also available from Xtradecal...

Roundel sizes were 36" fuselage and under wing, and 54" on top of the wing.

Thanks for all that Bill, I'll keep an eye out for the decals. I'm a fair bit out then with my roundels on the top of the wing but they seem to match my references regarding the placement as I've lined them up with panel lines and access hatches - Also I don't want to respray them now!

For me, this is more an exercise in weathering and a beat down paint finish, I'm not too fussed with accuracy in terms of markings for this build. I bought a whole pile of new weathering bits like pastels, washes and filters so I wanted a base to try them on and this was cheap and I found some great dirty pictures. If I can find the decals though, I'll go for it!

Insignia is finished. All of it has been masked and sprayed with paint a mix of Vallejo Model Colour and Tamiya. Thanks to Bill Clark for the insignia sizes for the smaller roundels! Next job is to do some replica fibreglass on the nose and tail then clearcoat for decals and weathering.

Hi Breaker,

Your Hunter is looking good, Fantasy print shop did 1/32 Decals but don't know if they are still about.

Yeah, they still do but none that for a late model camo over LAG. I'm gonna attempted to make my own serial masks and have a ponder about the squadron markings, see if there's any easy ones I can hand make.
