roym
Onboard Nimitz during her first Atlantic cruise. (note F-4Js from VF-31 still with Saratoga markings). I think it's XT862 but thats from just squinting at the photo. Anyway it's an FG.1 from Ark in '75 with RWR, no jubliee marking and nose modex 013. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/Phantom_FG.1_of_892_NAS_landing_on_USS_Nimitz_(CVN-68)_1975.jpg If anyone knows of any other RN tooms that cross decked on CVN-68 please let me know! Simon
Roy, It's not XT862 - that was W/O on May 19th 1971: http://www.ejection-history.org.uk/aircraft_by_type/f-4_phantom_raf.htm According to this page on the IWM, it's XV569: http://www.iwm.org.uk/collections/item/object/1060020593 There's a photo of '013' at the top of this page, though without the RWR fitted: http://lionels.orpheusweb.co.uk/AirSea/ArkRoyal/ArkRoy9/Ark9.html Regards Simon Edited May 13, 2016 by Simon
71chally
XV591, XV592 and XV587 also carried '013', in the RWR fitted period. Must admit it looks like an XT number to me?!
Pat C
How about XT867? There's a pic of it on a barge - aircraft 013 plus timing matches with your pic. You can't make out the serial but I did a quick search of the MAP website and they have pics of XT867 as 013 so I think that must be it. http://www.phantomf4k.org/image-gallery/brian-lewis-collection Pat
Simon
Apologies - I thought it was aboard the Saratoga. The AC coded VF-31 F-4J in the background has 'USS SARATOGA' along its spine, but it seems several F-4s from VF-31 were aboard the Nimitz in 1975: http://www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&p=308745 Simon
71chally
I think Pat C has it, in Fleet Air Arm Aircraft book an extract of XT897 history says '892 sqn 013/R 12.12.74 ....on USS Nimitz serious engine problem 11.9.75, off loaded by lighter (as seen in linked pic) to Lee-on-Solent 13.9.75'.
Gary West
100% XT867- that thin band around the radome and the non standard white backing to the ejector warning triangles help to ID. She was at Ceceil Field in Feb of 75 wearing 013 code which ties up with these dates and images.
Mountain goat
Here is 013 parked next to an A-7E of VA-86, probably just prior to being loaded on the barge in Pat's post. 007/ XT864 was also on board during Nimitz's maiden cruise. roym
Thanks lads, found another pic here with the same ejection warning triangles and the white band on the nose; but no RWR fairing! Linky Any idea if the white band is on the radome or fuselage?
Patrick Martin
I have 013 as XV588 in 1976. R013 not in date order XT865, XT867, XV567, XV569, XV588, XV589, XV591, XV592 PM
roym
1975 is the one I'm after. Having a different 013 in '76 makes sense if XT867 was in a hangar sulking. Mountain Goat, (or anyone...), can it be confirmed that XT864 was the 007/R on Nimitz in 1975, and did it have RWR?
