Revell/Monogram B-25 Mitchell.

Recommended Posts

Morning folks a quick update of yesterdays work, the poor lower fuselage join has been dealt with and sanded and this morning after a little tweaking

the forward nose was fixed in place and a dry run of the glazing revealed an acceptable if not perfect fit.Last job of the day was to fix the tail and wings

in place and she will be left to dry until tomorrow, day off today so any modelling time will go to the Phantom for the NATO GB.

Agree John, they must have impressed modellers when they hit the shelves back in the seventies,

Sure did! I got the B-17, I'm pretty sure as a birthday or Christmas gift, and I remember it as a turning point. I think I'd already built the 1/24 Airfix Stuka (which was a downer because I'd shown dad the Mustang and said, "I'd love something like this..." and then I get this ugly thing instead! But I still built it, and cannot now remember the details, such as how I painted all that surface area! But the B-17 made me appreciate 1/48. I also built the B-25H, and remember it as a fine kit. I think the weighted tires are a modern refinement, by the way.

Nice work on this!

Following intently as I wish to do a Catch 22 Mitchell and was wondering whether to use the Monogram kit, am a fan of their stuff over quite a large era.

Thank's James,Hmmm difficult to give you an answer,as you can see it's a child of the seventies and suffers the limitations of the day if you want a

Monogram kit and won't miss the decals try an old boxing from the early releases as I assume you will use the Catch 22 decals available,Accurate

minutures I believe is the best kit in this scale which has also appeared in Academy boxes I'm not sure the versions produced and prepare to pay

double the price.

I notice my LMS has the 1/48 Superfortress in stock what a kit that must be!

Think I would be happy to use the Monogram offerings, they look right overall and the surface detail (even subtly raised) suits a beaten up and weathered Mitchell to my eyes.

I always liked their stuff, I remember the B-36 as a kid and had one as a teenager, struck me as not only highly enjoyable to put together, but just nicely detailed and looked right when complete.

Anyway, will carry on watching and admiring...

The Acc Min is a B/C/D/G, while the Monogram is H or J. Both decent kits at the least, but I don't think it is worth the conversion required to get from one generation to the other. (Most significant difference is a deeper rear fuselage on the later types, to accommodate tail gunner.)

Monogram has raised panel lines (shock! horror!) but it is a perfectly respectable kit.

My introduction to the Mitchell was "Hanover Street" with Harrison Ford, and the documentary about how Jeff Hawke flew Mitchells across the Atlantic for the filming.

Hello,Steve - You're doing a fine job on this build and she's coming together very well indeed. Far be it from me to encourage you to divert valuable Fettling time to a 'Phantom' ask well!? ;) Great work. All the very best,Paul.

<Sigh>Another 1:48 build tempting me to go up a scale. Late to the party Steve but erecting a bench to watch the rest of this one. Good stuff, with just the right hint of nostalgia!

You're tempting me the pull out the one I started a couple years back-didnt get as far as you have, but I've gotten most of the interior done, just not put together.

Yours is looking good. :)

The Monogram Mitchells are great detailed and accirate as are all their medium and heavy WW2 bombers. THe AM are so alo but of different versins and the odd error not shared by Monogram. The monogram H is really heavy on the detail.

Nice job keep it up!

How do you replace the raised panel lines lost to sanding?

Hi Texan,to be honest the kit doesn't have many to loose on the upper and lower fuselage I simply re-scribed the few lost with a sharp blade, the wings

have no lines on the areas that need sanding.

Thank's folks, table packed away for the day but got the intakes assembled and added, just popped the props on and dropped onthe glazing to show

the fit which just needs a little tweak here and there, also wheels painted just waiting for a wash, sadly she still tail sit,s so I need to squeeze more lead

in the little room I have left.

stage,I may have to mask and fix glazing for the painting which I never do normally we'll see.

HI Steve

check which one you are modelling, some B-25 top turrets looks to have framing, but are infact clear and what you are seeing is join joins for the clear perspex.. note the sides

b25_turret_16.jpg

see this regarding armour,

and Don McIntyre's excellent walkaround

PS

Hi, Steve! :bye:

Will be followin' this build, too. I was wonderin,' 'cause I've heard that the engine cowls were inaccurate on this kit, if the DMold resin replacement would fit.

Whut d'ya think, matey?

Thanks, S.

Hi Unc

I now there is alot of whining about the AM kits cowling, and the ineveitable resin, though Scott Van Aken just sanded them ..

http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234970880-b-25-cowlings-3-types/

I've not seen a load of wailing about the Mono J cowlings, a quick look at hyperscale gets this

http://www.network54.com/Forum/149674/thread/1463628349

Paul Budzik has a build where he talks about the cowlings

http://paulbudzik.com/models/b25.pdf

backdating a J to a D, but misses that the D has shallower rear fuselage... it's a detail I'll have a look at, but bear in mind there are 3 types of cowl, BM link, which may vary.

Apparently the AM B-25B/C/D has problem with the nose as well

but no photos to show problem...

Morning folk's I primed in gray first thing this morning and a touch of filler was used on one or two small areas but the fuselage halves look fine

which was the area that worried me,I have given her a first coat of Vallejo olive and plan to lighten up a couple of thin coats after it dries to fade

the overall look, before the final coat I plan to add the now masked glazing.
