Paul E
Nearly at the end of the PE super detailing, this time to the hull moulding; PE added are doors to the forward screen of the sweep deck, deck hatches and deck tread plates. Tread plates are metal plates that are placed outside of high traffic or dirty area access doors and hatches to reduce wear or reduce the transfer of oil and dirt from outside to and vice versa. and some pictures showing the tread plates in relation to the doors: Tread plates really stand out on a wooden deck which is why I have included them in my detailing. Finally some pictures of the assembled model with PE detail fitted: Next step will be to start painting.

Paul E
Thank you for the kind comments, I think the investment in making my own PE is paying off and I am quite pleased with the result so far.
Paul E
Moving on with the build. Primer has been applied to the major parts of the model, with the exception of the bridge moulding which needs some more detailing work prior to painting. First up is hacking off the little structure that sits at the rear of the bridge moulding, which is not present on HMS Brereton. Then I have added the lip that circumnavigates the bridge roof. This was made from 0.3mm plastic rod. Other items added to the bridge moulding are the navigation lights: These were also fashioned out of plastic strip and 0.6mm rod. Then more plastic strip was applied for the bridge window wiper motors: Next step is to add the kit PE railings and ladder before the forward superstructure is ready for priming. On to another parts from the kit; the Orepesa floats and their stowage racks. There is a minor issue with the white metal Orepesa floats fitting in the PE stowage racks. This is relatively easy to fix. Essentially the fins on the cast floats are oversized and need to be trimmed (filed) back by about 1mm each side. The picture shows before and after filing: Once filed down the fins fit through the aperture in the PE facing upwards, when they are through, rotate the float so fins face down. These are also on the list for priming and painting. Thank you for watching, there is more to follow soon Edited July 14, 2016 by Paul E
Paul E
I have added the ladder and lifebuoy chutes to the bridge structure. I have elected not to fit guard rails just yet as I think they will impede painting of the deck: I have also started on constructing the mast. Whilst the kit PE mast is nicely detailed, I personally find it too 2 dimensional for my tastes. So I have decided to make my own using brass rod for the main part of the mast and the PE details for the supporting struts. There is still a lot work to be done in getting the mast right but I think it will be worth it in the end. I have also started painting the hull with top coat: I am not too sure about the deck colour though, I think a dark wash to fill in between the planks might help. More to follow shortly.
Ex-FAAWAFU
I agree about the 2D mast. Pete's PE is superb in lots of ways (his contribution to my Ark build is incalculable), but the medium has limitations. I think your compromise solution should look great.
longshanks
Looking very tasty ! Must be satisfying using your own PE Kev
Paul E
Thanks guys, Kev, it is satisfying using my own PE although it seems to get lost in the rest of the model after painting. That said I still think it was worth doing.
Paul E
Not much to report on progress this week. I have added the PE anchor chains; and made up some of the kit PE: I have also continued to make progress with painting:
Ex-FAAWAFU
Not lost at all when you look more closely; the petrol stowage, for instance, is unmissable - and will be all the more so once painted. Great job; looking forward to starting mine soon (hunter first, then Stubby)

Paul E
Thank you for the comments guys, they are always appreciated. Progress pictures from this last weekend; with more items from my PE, this time adding the ladder from the sweep deck to the foredeck: and then adding the deck treads to and bottom: Then I have made up even more of the kit PE and set it up for painting: and then fitting: and detailing: I bulked out the kit PE signal lamps with some plastic rod to make them less 2 dimensional. And finally a picture of overall progress so far: More will follow. Thanks for looking.

Paul E
Thanks for the comments. I had a minor disaster early this week when I forgot the model was not attached to the base and dropped it on the floor . Fortunately the carpet monster was kind and gave up all the bits that broke off. Having recovered the model and my composure I set about applying decals and mounting the model in the sea scape: and I am representing HMS Brereton as she was in 1985 when she was attached to the Mersey Division of the Royal Navy Reserve and part of the 10th MCM squadron. Having done a little research I produced my own funnel badge decals. The Tons served in different squadrons at various points in their long careers each squadron having their own funnel insignia: 1st Mine Counter Measures Squadron: 2nd Mine Counter Measures Squadron: 3rd Mine Counter Measures Squadron: 10th Mine Counter Measures Squadron: The Fishery Protection Squadron: Hong Kong Squadron: and the Middle East Squadron: There are others and the best place for information is on the Ton Class Association website. http://tca2000.co.uk/?page_id=369 There will be a short break whilst I am away on holidays and then service will resume as usual. Thanks for looking.

Paul E
An update on progress following the mandatory short break that occurs around this time of year; I have continued on with the detailing the bridge superstructure adding various details including the railings, RAS high point, stowed daylight shapes and the ship name boards which came from my PE set. and I have made the ships badge to mount on the bridge screen: and mounted, close up; and at a distance: Next up is the mast.
