Triceratops Tamiyus

Recommended Posts

I was pleased to see others building the Triceratops Eurycephalus kit from Tamiya and I thought that I would post my progress too.

The kit uses the name Triceratops Eurycephalus which, as it turned out, was a rather short lived dinosaur. First named in 1935 by Erich Schlaikjer the species only lasted until the mid 1980's before it was realized that it was not a unique species but likely an individual variant on a theme and the classification was discredited (along with about 15 other "species"). The current thinking is that only two species actually existed with all the others a result of misinterpreting individual variations within Triceratops Prorsus and Triceratops Horridus which were know to be different species as they lived a few million years apart.

Back to plastic...

This kit requires a fair amount of filler, which is an understatement as I chose to address the lack of the mouth interior by using vast amounts filler putty in several layers so it would not attack the plastic. Had I seen Mrs PlaStix excellent solution for this first I could have saved about a half a tube of the stuff!

But to late now, I am in process and thought it would be nice to post along with the other Triceratops builds.

Good start Greg and nice that you and Mrs Stix can share your research :)

Looking forward to seeing how you get on too - I think my older brother had an Aurora dinosaur or two when we were kids (he never liked aircraft, strange bloke really :D) and I never saw the Tamiya kit before now... they must be like buses: you wait ages then two turn up at once!*

Cheers,

Stew

Hi Greg, great to finally see your photos, thanks for the background info too. It will be good to be able to build them together and share ideas with all the other Dino lovers....

Hi Greg,

The problem with nearly all the known dinosaurs is that they have been identified and described from what can only be described as very partial remains. In some cases a single bone, or in the case of Yaverlandia a partial bone from the many that comprise the cranium. So when more complete remains are recovered and studied, it is not unusual that previously different species, not necessarily of the same genus, are recognised as belonging to the same species. The technical term for this is synonymy and I do a lot of this, my record, so far, being 56 different species reduced to one.

Also, just like most life on Earth dinosaurs grew during their life time and the difference between juvenile and adult examples of the same species has produced a number of extraneous descriptions that inflated the species count. This technical term for this being ontogeny.

The build looks good! More please!

So much of the building with this Tamiya kit is filling and sanding, filling and sanding....

I do find that it helps to use a battery powered Dremel tool with a conical grinding bit.

It is really helpful in dealing with all those seams, and as it turns out, dinosaurs didn't really have seams so they all gotta go.

Hi Greg still jealous about your dremel... But I'll get over it eventually!! I think we could have discovered a new variety of Triceratops with a hint of seam...but hopefully it will be so subtle that no one notices.

Looking good though!
