shood23 Posted May 3, 2016 Share Posted May 3, 2016 (edited) So with another build for this year closing in on the finish line very quickly I have decided to bring out another f1 car as my mclaren mp4/30 build has really lit a fire under my butt for f1 cars again. This car in the end was so close to giving Fernando Alonso what he dreamed of, a title in a ferrari, but he missed out by 3 points in the end to then redbull and now current ferrari driver Sebastian vettel mainly due to mistakes of other drivers (Mr grosjean in Belgium) other than that alonso drove the wheels off this ugly duckling and well and truly put the car in places it didn't deserve to be alot of times like pole in Germany and Britain. This was also the car that ferrari first ran the pull rod front suspension which they ditched this year after James Allison got his hands properly on the design board at ferrari. So enough back story on the car The box The bits I have to enhance it slightly These are the resin rain tyres which are going to require me to modify the rims and by the looks of it try and widen the diameter of the hole for the rims to fit in slightly as they are around 1-2 mm too small I have made a start by gluing in the pillars of the from wing on to the underside of the nose piece A little trick I have been told with these newer style fujimi kits is to reinforce the joints for the pillars with a scrap of plastic The air intake/roll hoop has been stuck together And finally for now I have started putting the side intakes on More soon Shaun Edited May 7, 2016 by shood23 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I couldn't help but do a twin build with the f2012 and the ferrari f10 from 2010 so this whole thing may now get a little confusing as the 2 cars are pretty similar. But enough of that and on with the f10. I will be making it as the 2010 Korean gp car for reason explained below The box I also have resin rain tyres for this aswell as the Korean gp was a very wet race as it was the first time there and the asphalt was very slick and slippery in the rain which allowed Fernando Alonso to win again for the 5th and last time in 2010 before vettel beat him to the championship in Abu Dhabi I have made a start on the body And like the f2012 I have made this car previously and I don't know if its that my modelling standards have improved or the mould has worn out or changed alot in the last 4/5 years but the fit is terrible I have had to put spacers in so all the panels line up with the engine cover and the floor properly So the rims fit in the resin tyres I have had to grind off the mid section quite a lot and unknowingly damaged the face of the rims a little but it's ok because I was going to make this as a raced car anyway so a little damage from contact with the walls/kerbs or other drivers happened alot during the 2010 Korean gp And the rims have required a little grinding aswell to take off the bit inside what tells you what wheels they go on but now they fit snuggly when the rims are cold. A little trick with resin tyres I was told was to leave them In a hot area or hot water for a while as they will expand a little making it easier to get them on the rims then as they cool they will shrink back down and clamp on so no messy glue is needed f2012 So on to the f2012 As there was no brains used when designing how the body parts went together on this car I have to make it as a curbside model so I have glued some of the engine covers on and like I said with the f10 The fit is terrible it almost as if the side pods are from 3 different cars. This is after glueing them and sanding back alot of material so the all had the same lines Some more fujimi brains were not working properly when I came to the rear parts of the engine cover as there was never a line going down the mid point of the exhaust exits so the 2 parts were cut into 4 and the 2 lower exhaust parts stuck on the the upper part and the line filled And finally I have to put this up to show the similarities and the differences between the two cars More soon Shaun 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

shood23 Posted May 12, 2016 Author Share Posted May 12, 2016 thanks john i did think you would like some more f1 ferraris on here. small word update on this. where the fit on both cars is so bad the bodies are taking an awful lot more time than i ever expected. The f10 has only just had the engine cover put on after spending what felt like forever sorting the gaps between the sidepod inlets and the monocoque but its startin to move forward. the f2012 has had rhe engine cover rear part put on and as i have been sorting every panel 1 by 1 on this car as i remember it being quite difficult its glue on, dry, sand down then then repeat for the next panel. but as my gtr build is now fully done i will have a little more devoted to these cars now also i found this picture on photobucket from the first time i did the f2012 but in the livery of the spanish gp it was ok back then but now i can just see all the bits i would change (or should i say am changing) more soon shaun 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

shood23 Posted July 8, 2016 Author Share Posted July 8, 2016 Wow it's been a long time again since I updated this build but honestly I haven't been concentrating on these 2 as much as I'd hoped But in the last month I have primed, sanded, refilled gaps, primed and sanded back again and finally primed again. There is a little section at the rear that hasn't had much attention but it will once I start priming with white primer And it's the same story with the f2012 really but whilst priming the main car I noticed I had forgotten to add the 2 little side deflectors add ons And finally I have painted some of the resin tyres More to come soon Shaun 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I know that people use various colors under the red of Ferrari F1 cars depending on the year - I have an F2008 to make, and have seen people use gold undercoat? MetroRacing Posted July 12, 2016 Share Posted July 12, 2016 (edited) I can't answer that question fully, but I'll have a good go lol. A gold undercoat would only be viable if you were applying a clear red over it. Like a candy colour etc. Red is one of those colours that changes easily depending on what undercoat colour you use. White, grey, pink or red primers are all generally used. I suppose the reason for people using different ones for different year cars is that in real life the paint was different but they only have 1 red colour. Most model paint manufacturers only have the one Ferrari red, so varying the shade via the undercoat cheats having to make your own paint mix. Companies like Zero and Gravity use real automotive paints, therefore they can offer actual colour matches for each shade of red used and one can stick to a favoured primer and still get the tonal differences across their models. I believe Zero recommend their pink primer with a lot of their reds and it apparently also works well under a yellow paint too. Hope that helps somewhat. Probably complete gibberish but it makes sense to me at least haha. Oh yeah and here's Shaun turning out yet more perfect plastic models as always hehe. Great job nonetheless. I don't paint anything solid red without pink primer anymore This was to f2007 I did earlier this year with white primer then gold with tamiya clear red on top Funnily enough I have a mfh 1/20 and a 1/12 f2008 as well, I have sort of started the 1/20 one and I was going to see what would be a better under coat with the clear red as the f2007 and 2008 look to be different colours the f2008 looks less cherry and more red again so I want to know if with silver under clear red gives a closer look. But yellow I have heard is good for under coats on ducatis, this will be another one I test at some stage. Shaun Ps. shood23 Posted July 23, 2016 Author Share Posted July 23, 2016 My bimonthly update from looking at how much I do on these lol The f10 has had a couple of gloss coats done so I can now decal most of the body parts And one in the late afternoon sun The f2012 has had some red airbrushed over the pink primer so now just needs a clear coat or 2 so I can get some decals on And lastly all of the parts like the wings and aero parts are now ready from primer for both cars, I just now need to make sure I don't mix them up More soon Shaun 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

A small update on these 2 cars The f10 has been had decals on and had a few clear coats put on And the nose So that that for the f10 for now while the clear cures up The f2012 has been a little more testing with the decals given the curves involved compared to the f10 so I haven't even finished decals yet The thing that's going to be the biggest pain in the butt with this is the carbon decals at the end More soon Shaun 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Those ferrari badges on the engine cover have been a right pain, alot of micro sol and heat has been needed to get them down. All the paints so far on these are zeros but the clear coat I have treated like I would a rattle can so I heated it up a little in warm water to give it a natural thinning without actually adding thinners so it lays down smoother than normal. I just need this damp weather to go away so I doesn't mess with the clear on the f2012. I have added the majority of the front suspension parts The uprights were a really pain to get in as the holes in the suspension arms were about 1mm too narrow to get them in, my mistake I should have checked before trying to fit, a small amount of filing later and they fit fine Alot of the rear suspension parts have been stuck together and painted aswell, lot will be hidden once done so I didn't fully paint it all just the parts that will show. shood23 Posted August 24, 2016 Author Share Posted August 24, 2016 A biggish update but not a lot has changed On the f2010 The side deflectors have now been painted and are ready for clear coating The mirrors for both cars are now ready for clear coating as well The front nose is now finished and ready for race wear I did have to strip all the front wing and rear end plates for both cars On to the f2012 I have started the massive carbon job, the suspension arms went on very nicely The underneath of the monocoque carbon went on very easily as well The rear has had a few carbon parts as well The front wing elements have had the decals done More soon Shaun 3 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
