Italeri Jaguar GR. 3 "Big Cat" 1/72 - Completed

Recommended Posts

Hi

I thought I'd start this one and try and get it finished by the time I next get to see this at Cosford in June.

Am going to add some aftermarket wheels, but I think otherwise it'll be OOB.

I had a go at dry brushing in the cockpit, it's still new for me, but seems to have added a bit of interest to the interior.

Thanks for looking

Can't beat the Jag! A great looking jet taken from our skies too soon.

Will be keeping an eye on this build.

Looking good there. I've built this one myself.

Watch out for the upper surface decals, they cover a lot of real estate and mine wanted to bed down as soon as they touched, leaving almost no time for adjustment.

Of course that could just be my technique ;)

I'm off to Cosford for the show in June as well, looking forward to a great day (it usually is) :)

Hi bull-nut

Thanks for the heads up re the decals!

If you can remember your build, I've got a couple of questions.

The instructions say it's all one grey colour - is that right or should it be different on the top side?

Do the curvy bits which clip onto the wings (don't know the proper name sorry) need to be painted orange, or do the decals which go onto them totally cover them?

How do you get the little fins on the tail on? After the decal? I'm thinking of leaving them off as not sure how glueing them on top of the decal will be.

Thanks in advance :)

Paint the fuselage grey all over, the decals will meet/overlap slightly to cover the upper surface grey with the orange needed, the wing fence decals should cover them, but I found it easier to match an orange paint and paint them rather than fiddling with decals.

I left off the antennae strakes on the fin, but I guess if you were careful you could add them afterwards, I think I'd carefully cut a space in the decals for them though, and I'd suggest painting the whole fin area black before you add the fin decals, mine didn't like bedding down over the very complex contours, and needed multiple applications of Microsol too snug down.

Hope that helps. Not the most lucid reply I'm afraid, trying to edit my Tigerday footage here and just found out that Windows 10 doesn't like my current editing software installation, hoping an update will solve the problem.

I didnt build an Italeri single seater so I can't help with the fin aerials, Bull-nut's advice is king here

If they painted the scheme over the normal camouflage pattern the upper surfaces (what you can see of them) should be Dark Sea Grey (roughly level with the tops of the intakes and along the top line of the fuselage at the canopy)

All surfaces below that demarcation needed to be Dark Camouflage Grey on my model

If it helps I found that Humbrol's Dark Sea Grey no 164 and dark Camouflage Grey no 156 were a pretty good colour match to the real scheme

After market wheels are worthwhile but the Italeri ones were not that far from accurate

Good luck, Jaguar comes in as "A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do!" I reckon

I'll pop out and get some popcorn tomorrow

Just checked mine, I painted all of the uppers the same grey as the underside, I think I used Tamiya ocean grey. The only upper surface areas that aren't covered by decals are the tailplane and the mainplane trailing edges.

Thanks bull-nut, hopefully I'll get to painting by the end of this weekend.

This has been going a bit slower than planned - had some problems with my airbrush (mostly user error), but seem to have it working ok again now so hopefully will have some progress to show tonight.

Ok, so I've finally got some paint on to this one.

First was the upper sides, I went for the Dark Sea Grey in the end (Vallejo Model Air), I didn't seem to get on that well with the paint, I think it probably needs more thinner next time I use it.

Then masked the top edges off.

Then on the lower sides a little pre-shading with Tamiya Nato Black, covered over with Humbrol Dark Camouflage Grey, although I'd read mixed things about Humbrol Acrylics, this went on quite nicely using the Humbrol thinners.

It then became apparent that I hadn't filled the holes for the centre pylon, not sure if I want to sort it out now and have to repaint the underneath though :(

Next job is touch a few bits out and paint the area above the exhausts in a metal.

You're having slightly more luck with that section under the Adours that 'pops' in (like merry h*ll it does :( )

I like the preshading under there

(the holes, could you not simply pop the pylon on? She must have had the pylon on sometime with the flash paint job on)

Thanks for the comments perdu

I found the same problem with the section under the Adours on another Jag I built. This time I glued it to one side of the fuselgae, let it set overnight and then wrestled it onto the other side. I'm not sure why it's so tricky!

Good point about the pylon - hadn't thought of such an obvious solution!

Not sure if XX119 had a centerline pylon fitted during its 'active' time.

But it sure has since its arrival at Cosford.

Thank you! The Cosford look is exactly what I'm after - I love seeing the Jags there at the air show each June :-) Edited by stevemk1

I suppose the bonus for me of not going to Le Mans two years ago was getting to Cosford that weekend instead

Not such a bonus queueing for nigh on three hours on the adjacent roads getting there

That is a lovely picture of the Spotty One

I've only just seen this. I have the Model Alliance 72nd sheet for this bird. Aircraft Illustrated's August 2007 issue has an article on painting the thing, written by the Sgt who designed the scheme. Also present is a short piece by the unit's CO. There's a goodly number of photos, as well, including a quite magnificent centre pull-out. Well worth chasing down if you can.

The MA set has the rings and rips only, it's up to the modeller to do the orange - looks like an each way bet as to who has the more difficult task!

Following along.

Looking good. That's quite a decalling task ahead of you.

Good luck.

Thanks, I put the long decal on top of the spine on and it dried with a couple of wrinkles in it (I'm sure they weren't there before!).

I tried to soften it again to adjust, but think it'll just do more harm than good.

Thanks Rob, I'm not which way is harder either. Far fewer to do on the Italeri version (so probably a bit easier), but big consequences if one of them goes wrong!

I'll have a look for the Aircraft Illustrated, sounds useful.

If you do happen to be planning on not using the 2 seater decals on the Model Alliance sheet and wanted to offload them, I'd happily buy them off you.

Most of the main decals are now on, still need to add the one which goes on the Pitot tube, and then the ones on the tail fin.

Most of the decals went on ok, but had a few problems with one of the ones on the spine, on a close look there are a couple of small creases which I wasn't able to get rid of.

Finally got this one finished. The biggest problem at the end was the wing fences, thought I'd use the orange decals rather than paint them, but couldn't fit them without damaging the decals. In the end I had to remove the decals and mix up some paint, not perfect, but doesn't look too bad.

Overall I'm pretty happy with this one, a couple of creases when the main decals dried, but not too noticeable.
