Aaaargh its an airfix Focke wulf fw109 1/72 scale birthday challenge. Done and dusted and RFI :D.

Recommended Posts

Hi guys.

This is my second RFI, and my first ever 1/72 scale build, not counting the many I built at the age of six. :D I have only built Tamiya kits since getting back into the plastic a year or so ago, so when I was bought this little fella for my birthday by a friend at work I couldn't resist the challenge, and see what all the fuss was about. Fit issues, filler, tiny scale / paint woes, flash. Airfix has never been on my radar really so this was a bit of a double whammy. I really wanted to do this lovely little kit justice. I'd bought new Flory washes and this would be their maiden voyage too. I'm happy with the way the kit turned out, there were some build issues but nothing I didn't enjoy fixing. The whole filling, fixing, fitting, re-fitting aspect was really fun.

For those who are interested here is the WIP of this build.

I hope you all enjoy the pictures. Here goes.

Well there you have it. I hope you like my latest bird. It has been a real eye opener and a whole heap of fun to boot. Thanks to everyone for chipping in along the way.

All the best and happy modelling.

John. :hobbyhorse:

Those with a keen eye will notice "Noel" on the bomb. It was he who bought me the birthday gift, so I decided to imortalize him. :D

A sweet bit of modelling John and the photographs bring all the details out a treat. Seeing what you've done here with the washes makes my resolve not to splash any cash this month weaken further. 1/72 suits you as well as 1/48! Bravo :)

Nice to see it complete. Makes me feel better about the one in my stash!

Well done

Rob

Thanks Rob. Glad you like it. :D I can highly recommend digging it out of the stash. It's a lovely kit. And not too much work to finish. :)

Thanks Tony. Such a Fun kit to do. I'm really loving the 1/72, worried about going larger again. ;)

Sorry about harping on about the washes. They are brill. I think I'll tone them down on the next build though. You can get them singular.

I'd recommend the grime one. ;):D

Excellent photos, thanks for sharing. Like many, it seems, I have one of these in my stash - albeit as a 'Dogfight Doubles' set with Hawker Typhoon kit included. So who knows, one day I may get my chance - emulating your results here will be a tall order though, for me at least.

You've done a great job, it's not too bad of a kit but does require a little filler here and there, however I really like the scheme and you've managed to weather it superbly.

Well done mate, that's a very dirty bird you've built there :D and nice photo style as well.

I enjoyed your WIP thread and the end result is excellent and built at a fair clip too ;)

Looks like you're a natural in braille scale :D looking forward to your next project.

Thanks for all the lovely comments. She is a dirty old bird alright, my next build will be more subtle I promise. But also more of a challenge I'm sure. Hope you guys are in for the ride? It's great to have you along.

Nice build. Certainly been in the wars. Reckon your mate Noel would prefer you buy him a beer as a return favour rather than drop a bomb on him :) Oh yeh, welcome to the Gentleman's Scale.

Always good to see a dirty bird on here! Nice work on the Wurger, just a note that the bomb is actually a fuel tank, so it could be full of beer for Noel...

Is it. Ha! Well how about that. Beer is always better than bombs in my opinion. :D

Oh and thanks for the nice comments. :D

Just found the RFI for the WIP... It's an absolute belter John :). You have me thinking some of my limited budget must very soon go to Mr. Flory. The washes have worked very well. Not a washes related thing; but I really like the weathering down to metal on the cowl. You are a natural in 1/72. I am quite an enthusiast of JG 54 (Grünhertz) and know they used butcher birds in the later stages of WWII. I feel an addition to the stash is imminent - and it's *all - your - fault* :D

:goodjob:

Best regards
Tony
