This was supposed to be my Kittyhawk OV-10A review/build thread, however I'm waiting on some EZ Line getting here and this 109 has been waiting patiently for three-and-a-half years for me to finally notice it, so this afternoon I started hacking at it: Hopefully at the end of the process it will look a little like this... hopefully !! In the meantime, I put the block together to a point where it's ready for a splash of paint and started filling/sanding the myriad of sink holes in the cowl covers. Couldn't resist taping together, just because... The moulding are superbly detailed and the rivets/panel lines very delicate indeed. Also they match exactly the drawings in the old but still good IMHO AeroDetail book from Bunrin-Do, published in the mid 1980's. Stay tuned, folks, I don't think this one will take-up too much time on the bench... or I could be completely wrong and still be working on it in eighteen months time !! AFN Ian. Hey Tex, It's the Trumpeter 1:32 kit - although the box claims it's a 109F, it's actually an early/mid G series fuselage & wings. There was no tropical filter in this boxing, so I've had to order a resin one. Other than a (very) little Eduard etched goodiness in the 'pit, it's going to be straight from the box. Ian. For the block I mixed my own 'iron black' then sprayed it in a couple of passes with my Iwata BR. Everything else is hand-painted with a hairy stick. Mostly Tamiya acrylics and enamels. As a 'weathering' touch, I've lightly brushed-in some 'Red Desert' MIG pigment... even sealed behind its' covers the block would have got some sand & dust, wouldn't you say ?? Ian Posted May 6, 2016 Author Share Posted May 6, 2016 The last few days I haven't had too much work on, and the NZ weather has been very mild, so managed to get a fair bit of bench-time: Started working on the 'pit on Monday, and got the main bits together quite quickly. First time I've used Trumpeter etch and found it an absolute pleasure to work with. By Monday evening I'd brought all the 'pit bits' together and added the engine mounts. On Tuesday I started the 'staged' painting process by getting all the basic colours on. Also built-up the machine guns. This was where I was up-to on Tuesday evening. Basic colours are all on - I mixed my own RLM66 from Tamiya acrylics and the RLM02 came right out of the Lifecolour bottle !! - I'd also don a little old school dry-brushing. Fit of all the parts at this point (and beyond) has been exceptional, well up to Tamiya & Hasegawa standard. Instructions are clear and unambiguous. Very nice indeed. That said, there's no excuse for not test-fitting as you go !! Which brings me to the next 'natural break'. Next instalment when I've finished editing it in a few minutes. Stand-by. Used the kit throttle quadrant & leavers painted using the old 'Aero Detail' book as a reference. May not be 'perfect' but looks nice and busy to my eye. Finally (today), got some test-fitting done, just to be certain. So that's it until after the weekend, thanks for looking and/or commenting, more next week. Ian Posted May 10, 2016 Author Share Posted May 10, 2016 So I reckon most of you will have seen that the fuel line that runs along the right-hand sill isn't there. That's because it isn't in the kit - I'm pretty sure they used the pics of 'Black 6' from the old Aero Detail book, the fuel line is absent for whatever reason. It was pointed-out to me on another site, and TBH I wasn't too bothered, however then I thought... 'well I've worked hard to get it to this point, so why not...' So here's what I've cobbled together, not pretty, but better (maybe ?) than nothing at all: 30amp fuse wire, an old 1:72 AIM-7 missile body, drilled through, the wire fed through then bent in to (rough) shape, test-fitted, painted and CA'd in to place. Like I said a wee bit rough'n ready but should look OK with the canopy opened later.... More progress pics in a minute, please stand-by. Ian Posted May 10, 2016 Author Share Posted May 10, 2016 IP next, nothing special here, simply followed the Eduard instructions and the etch fitted the Trumpeter bits like a glove - which is what it's supposed to do, right !! Still, better test it to make sure that it doesn't foul the fit of the side panels etc... OK, that looks fine. So just add the twin MG17's in the cowl and ready to button-up the fuselage. After a lot of test-fitting, I decided to ignore the construction sequence and therefore the 'wing root gap' issue by gluing the top wings directly to fuselage - again the fit was 'hand-in-a-glove' neat. Just a spot or two of 'Contaca' cement, let it sit in place for about five minutes then brush-in some 'Kiwi Weld' (a superb locally 'grown' product), from underneath which avoids those pesky glue bubbles we sometimes get on the these sort of joints. Ian Posted May 12, 2016 Author Share Posted May 12, 2016 Using this photo as a reference, I dry-brushed a dull silver tone (Humbrol 56) over the prop blades, then went back over the leading edges and extreme tips to try and give that 'just burnished' look... Not as extensive as in the photo, but then I'm doing a different machine from the same unit !! - would really appreciate some feedback from folks, let me know what you think, please. Next session will be to rub-back the overall RLM02 paintwork (Lifecolour), then mask the canopies and start the pre-shading. As ever thanks for taking the time to look and/or comment, more next week. Thank Gawd for fuse wire. It's bizarrely hard to find it any more in my part of the world; ended up having to go to the local farmers' mart and find it in amongst the milking supplies of all places... Todays update - Pre-shading over an overall coat of (Lifecolour) RLM02: All Tamiya acylics, Deck Tan, Field Grey and Red Brown with my 'home brew' RLM66 for the deeper shadows and exhaust areas. Ian Posted May 25, 2016 Author Share Posted May 25, 2016 Lots of photos of paint, so I'll break this down in to 'bite size' chunks.... Starting with the undersides: Xtracolour RLM78 enamel - at least ten years old and used only once before - cut with refined turps about 65/35 and applied in two thinnish coats followed by lightening a little with Humbrol Lt. Gull Grey (129) and post shading in to the centre of the panels. Here it is a wee bit closer: I appreciate that right now it looks a wee bit like a harlequin but the effect will 'calm down' once I apply a pin wash and a few of the usual weathering techniques.
