Bandai Thunderbird 2

Recommended Posts

This is going to be my next project, I have had it in my stash since 1987:

For most of that time it was in the loft and time has not been kind to the decals:

Fortunately Kallisti was kind enough to send me the decals from the model he built as an RAF What If:

Here is the rest of it:

Its quite toy like and includes a wind up clockwork motor:

I don't think I'll be using that though.

Bye for now,

Nigel

Ooh Fireflash elevator cars! Excellent :)

Has anyone else thought that Virgil's eyebrows seem to get bigger & thicker during the Fireflash landing? Could just be me :P

A spot of paint & weathering will remove the toylikeness Nigel ;)

Hmm,

Same as the one I built a couple of years ago.

Tape it together and see how well the pod fits.

Land Rover Discovery panel shut lines spring to mind.

Then have a good think on how to correct it!

Good luck,

Pete

Probably my favorite Thunderbird. Have watched a couple builds recently so really looking forward to see what you do to this.

I keep thinking of getting the one that comes with the Hanger set. Maybe someday.

Did build Thunderbird 1 for a review awhile back, the Arii 1/44th scale kit. Pretty nice.

If it's like mine (unbuilt) the red exhausts are moulded in some slightly oily polythene type of plastic. Did anybody have success painting those?

Is there a quoted scale Nigel, or is it 'Box Scale'?

There is no scale quoted but according to Kallisti it's about 1:430.

Probably my favorite Thunderbird.

Mine too.

I suspected this and just confirmed that they are polythene in which case I have a secret weapon to make glue and paint adhere - stay tuned.

The panel lines are raised so there will be a rescribing job to do here, the raised numbers also need to go obviously and the windows will be opened up and new glazing made:

The insides of the fins are flat and look pretty unrealistic, my fix was to cut out some 1mm card (actually from scraps leftover from my Dalek build) and add them:

The 0.5mm black piece at the top also closes up a gap to the engine intakes, the join between the card pieces will need blending with some filler and they need shaping to a more aerofoil section:

That's it for today, bye,

Nigel

are you well? Telford catch up?

Hi Nick, yes I'm well thanks, I should be at Telford and a catch up would be great.

Are you going to open those sections up? You can use plastic strip to replace the grills and it would look much better

I have thought about this but they don't look like open grills on the studio models so I'm not sure.

Ah ha, so you've finally got round to this, watching with interest from now on :)

This kit is about 7" long if memory serves and since Thunderbird 2 is supposed to be 250 foot long, 250*12/7 = 429 so thats where my estimate of 1:430 came from :)

Got another 2 of these in the stash and a couple more 9" ones like I used in the TB 2 launch diorma for the SF GB last year. I have plans for some "action" dioramas when I get round to it... one day.

In the meantime...
