Needed to do a bit of filling on the end of the gearbox casing - when the two halves came together, they didn't mate very well with the rest of the gearbox that is part of the main engine case. I simple piece of plastic sheet sorted it very easily.

Colours still not final, but I am liking the slightly different hues of various components. Much of this is a dry fit at this point, as air-flow shrouds need to be fitted (that hide eveything!)

I'm pretty happy with this, but may darken certain areas with some Tamiya smoke or similar - I've used silver crayons, weathering powders etc to pick out edges - new to that black art, but going ok so far - I used some black Tamiya wash to pick out details, but wasn't happy with the way it 'bled' when dry.

In what was quite a productive weekend, I also managed to trim, polish, prime, paint and assemble a lot of the engine ancillaries...it is so satisfying to see the engine grow :)

Lots and lots of finishing effects etc to do later...

Some of these parts are little models in themselves...5 bits in this little guy...

This MFH kit comes with some nicely cast 'resin' parts - that is parts that are unfinished GRP or resin on the real car (as opposed to the white resin bodywork) = these are tinted like the real engine, but IMO need a little darkening and some weathering to pick out the detail - none of them look 'clean' on the real cars...in the picture below you can see the fan housing (dry fit) is darker, where I have used a Tamiya weathering wash (brown) to tint it - it has worked really well I think - more to go, but a good start...

Beautiful choices and incredible castings 'Nut. This photo record keeps them from being 'lost' when all covered up.

Great job, keep us posted.

Thanks chap - appreciated. I'm quite chuffed with how it has gone so far...some fantastic current WIP and finished kits being built of this, but not with this brownish finish, so I was a bit nervous with it, but ok so far!

I can feel my credit card itching. I have looked at these mfh kits and thought, nope too much white metal for me. I've had while metal in various kits and didn't like it. But that engine is just soooo lovely I may have to get something like this one day. God that's nice.

God that engine is beautiful!

'Bout half the length of Seven isn't it?

lol - probably!

One of my intentions is to photograph all the engines I am working on, together - for comparison purposes - this, MP4/4 Honda, FW16 etc

I'll try it in the 7 as well - in fact that would be cool with all the engines - can you imagine...

It is going together really well - and to be honest, the finishing with the brass wheel on the dremel is no big deal.

Ask me again when I try and assemble the chassis frame on this kit, or the front wing of the MP4/23 and I may change my mind - but for this chunky stuff, no issues!

Off to China for 2 weeks for work, so there will be a pause - although tomorrow off, so hope to get some more done before I leave!

- I do get to go to the Shanghai F1 race though, so not complaining!! (no, not on some corporate jolly - but I'm 'in the area' - so....)

This really is a quite er, "specialist" corner of the internet isn't it? Grown men getting palpably excited about plastic/resin/metal renditions of a bit of fairly pointless (marvellous) 70's engineering...

Not that I can deny I'll be looking out eagerly for the next update. :mental:

Very nice work so far on the engine. I also have this kit in my stash and the 1/12 MFH Ferrari 330 P4 too. I've been thinking about building one or the other after I finish the Mercedes. I will definitely be following this build and taking notes. Enjoy the Chinese GP.

Phenomenal work so far. How are you binding some of the metal parts together - epoxy/glue or are you trying to solder together?

'Super glue' (Can't remember proper name)

I'm tempted to try soldering for the framework, but this may not be the model to experiment with!

i have seen ppl solder this stuff with low temp solder successfully. i am not one of them. i melted the bugger into a pool.

I'm glad you posted that as I've been considering low temp solder for my MFH M19a, however now that you have confirmed that "a pool" is a distinct outcome I'll give it a swerve.

but them I am a very impatient man :bounce: . you could buy a cheap metal kit and have a practice, i however, will be sticking to devcon. its messy and wasteful, but i cant remember it failing on me.

I have to ask...with all those metal parts, what the blazes do you guys use to GLUE these parts together...??!! I'm thinking it must be some sort of epoxy, or super glue, but in what amounts...? I know super glue hates being put on in LARGE amounts, unless I suppose you are using a kicker...?
