RX-78 GP01 Gundam GP01 Zephyranthes

Recommended Posts

So over the last week or so I have mostly been playing with my new airbrush (H&S Silverline...oooh its nice  ) and most of my WIP are on hold apart from this one, that I bought just to see what all the fuss was about RG kits. So It just a quick build with a few small paint details added and I just about fished with it. I still need to do the weapons and a few more stickers and top coat it all. This little kit is fantastic, Bandai have crammed so much detail into it, the full inner frame is stunning and I would definitely recommend you have a look at the RG line if you haven’t given one a go yet, I will be adding a few more to my wish list.

That looks incredibly detailed! I'm watching this series at the moment and I still can't decide if I like the GP01 and friends yet. But it makes more sense in the form of your model - there's a sort of realspace hardware feel to the legs - love those cool little thrusters on the calf.

Did you use the stickers or decals? Oh, and does the Core Fighter have to be stuffed into the Gundam or can you build both at the same time?

[edit:] I am thick. You mentioned the stickers, and looking twice the Core Fighter folds up into the backpack with the guns being the beam sabres. I will let my dumb question stand as a lesson to future generations.

Thanks,

Will

Will, that made me smile.

They are all stickers but as far as stickers go for this type of thing they are very good and easy to use, not as good as water decals though. The only bits I have painted are the darkish grey on the armour, the gunmetal parts in a few places and all the thrusters.

He is already for a matt top coat now along with his mate, a repainted HG Jesta I did as my first project with the new H&S silverline.

Those are some great looking suits! 0083 is my favorite series and the GM/Nemo/Jegan/Jesta are my favorite mobile suits. I always hated what happened to the GP01. At least it got rebuilt into the b model.

Do you use the ink markers or a wash? I ask because the lines on the core fighter look so good. I'm about to tackle an Endless Waltz Gundam Wing that's going to require me to up my game.

Is that purple? That is cool! That kit would look right at home on an episode of Build Fighters.

Looks like I have to dust off my ink washing skills...

So after top coating the Gp01 and putting it on the screws to dry, I had a flash of inspiration to do something with the display rather than just stand it on the shelf. So the idea is that the mobile suit has had a fault or has been shot down and the core fighter is making its escape. So I have the wrecked ship base to use and I will mount the GP01 parts on rods and fit a flashing LED`s to the two parts of the mobile suit, I will also need to go back and add some weathering and some smoke.

Something like this, what do you think and how do I make smoke?

Started to have go at making my first explosion and the type of thing I had in mind coming out the top of the leg section. Its sculpted from foam filling of the type found in seats. I will add some paint and then see what it look like with a light as well, I might also try doing the same sort of thing with cotton wool.

That's looking really sweet Rock! The GP01/GP01Fb where both Gundams that to this day I am still not sure if I like them or not. It looks cool but there is just something that puts me off it. It must be all of the dodgy 80's hair cuts it reminds me of :P There is a bit in the show where the GP01gets absolutely ripped up as Kou takes it out for a fight in space when the GP01 is still configured for earthbased use. I remember it gets a light sabre through the foot tho. Been a while since I saw it tho.

Looking forward to more :)

Kind Regards,

Dazz

Dazzio I have been watching Stardust Memories again after building the kit, its very very cheesey but I still like it and its sort of what gave me the idea. As the GP01 is a ground based Gundam and it gets shot to bits by Cima ( I think). I figgered this could have happened while it was still in Australia under attack from Gato and the rest of the Zeon force. The GP01 is one my favorite Gundam designs all those little thrusters and vents are great.

Rock, I've left my DVD's of it at my parents (I've only moved out recently) so I'm having trouble trying to remember what actually happens. I know there is an Powered GM, lots of fighting and lots of sweating/stimulants taking from the pilots. :P But I have not forgotten the cheesy-ness tho, that will haunt me for the rest of my days! lol If you like the thrusters, I'm surprised you didn't go with the GP01Fb, that has two great big flipping ones off the back, then again I am not 100% if there is a RG of that one? I have the GP03S (HG) at home in pieces and a few other Gundams I need to finish (like all of them). :) Keep up the good work :)

Kind Regards,

Dazz

There is a RG GP01Fb and it very cool with those big shoulder thrusters.

My next build is the 1/550 Dendrobium thats going to have a full lighting kit flitted to it and Im going to have a go at some the painting ideas I have seen used on all those X and Y Wings on here.

Like the exploded thing! I just finished Stardust Memory for the first time and really enjoyed it - some great action with the various Mobile Armours.

I really want to like the Full Vernian but I just can't - those flowerpots on its shoulders are silly! But the GP01 and GP02 are pretty cool :)

Looking forward to seeing your Dendrobium - I have one that I started somewhere but got paralysed by indecision after seeing some awesome builds of it with hatches open launching submunitions and all kinds of stuff. If you're going to use some of the X-Wing tricks be careful about scale - any paint chips in 1/550 should be tiny - think weathering a small scale ship model rather than a starfighter.

My 2p :)

Will, Good point about the scale, I will bear that in mind when I get to it. I plan on adding some of the open pods but they are very small at the 1/550 scale though so not sure I can make them to a decent standard, but you have to try these things.

I have just ordered the Tamiya weathering set A and C for the GP01, never used them before as I would normally just dorb on some diluted paints mixed with a bit of pastel crayon, i though I might get some better control with these kits.

Pleased with how these have turned out, i put down a bit of white, red yellow and black, then blended in some orange and finished off with more black.

I haven't worked out how to post videos yet.

Lighting kit put together for by Jennifer at smallscalelights. She is the just the most helpful, professional and just great at this sort of thing.
