other are also listed - due June

The AMR Decals from MOTOBITZ should be available in early July, for several period and the restored schemes. Looking at the online images of the Studio 27 set some markings don't appear to me to be quite correct and I'm not mentioning the price! Oh damn!

Here is a link to a French website with loads of period photos and workshop manuals which may be of help, mainly for Rally versions, but worth a look see. www.calencar.free.fr

Nick,

You are certainly putting some impressive work into your kit. It's coming along nicely.

Thank you - can't quite believe how long it's been since I posted. But then life's been quite hectic recently.

So here's where I've got to:

Escort-MkI-New-floorpan-4

Both cars' floorpans have been completed as far as I'm concerned!! The top and and bottoms have been joined and filled; a fireproof bulkhead rebuilt on each; turret mountings and revised four-link boxes added - a lot of time-consuming filling and sanding. I put a quick blast of primer on this morning.

The kit has just a pipe 'running' from the rear pillar mounted fuel cap through the rear parcel tray - I've built a different shrouded version that will be carpeted:

Escort-MkI-NEW-Bulkhead-tunnel

I've also drilled seven holes along the top of the bulkhead for the stud fastenings that carry the tool roll. A bit of light sanding next before adding some black paint.

I've bought some anthracite coloured flock to use as carpet - something I've never done before!!

Looking very nice Nick, brings back some memories - mainly of welding up rust holes...!! :D

Flocking is easy - it must be as I've done a few road car models with it in the past. I always found it a good idea to paint the floor a similar colour to the flock so that any patchy bits don't show!

On a different note, I've sent you an off topic PM

What about a cheap skate version of flocking? I mask the areas that I don't want the effect. Spray some black, I usually use satin; and whilst it's still wet, coat it in flour. No preference but feel free to experiment lol.

Then when the undercoat paint has dried, tap and brush off the excess flour and then paint over it with the final colour. Typically Revell Anthracite for me. A few years ago I built 2 Stratos's and started a Subaru Legacy using that technique on the dash and seats. I found it very time consuming and the final effect was a bit hard to see through the glass parts so I don't bother anymore lol.

Well, Keith, a couple of the following pics will reinforce those memories.

Thanks for the tip on flocking, Ashley. I've already purchased some flock so will experiment with that firstly.

Here's an update. I've had to deal with the gap created by shortening the cradle. The internal sides have been lengthened by a few millimetres at the front as well as the base of the A pillar / kickpanel areas being increased:

The front panels have also received some attention.

Escort-MkI-SQ-front-panel-co

Blanking plates have been installed for the headlights to be mounted on. This first pic shows the void as it stands (on this particular one, they'll be square for the Alan Mann version so the foglamp mounting holes have been filled). On both versions, I've filled the recesses that would be where the anti-splash 'flaps' are glued. This is all very much work in progress so considerable cleaning up to do . . .

Escort-MkI-SQ-front-panel-plated

The next image shows the next stage: the round headlamp apertures have been cutout as have those behind the radiator grill leaving the distinctive 'web' to show.

With the grill framework in place:

Escort-MkI-RD-front-panel-2

So that's it for now - still a long way to go though!

You're very kind, Keith.

I must admit that this is taking a lot longer than I had originally thought - perhaps I should have studied the kit and instructions better before starting it, but I guess that's the penalty for pathfinding (as you put it). I'm not saying that I expected to have finished it by now, but I would like to have been a lot further down the track(!).

I think I'll take a break from them over July; I've got a 95% done Hurricane and a 75% done Tempest that I'd really like to get completed even if only to prove to Mrs B that I can actually finish something I've started!!

The front end is really starting to look the part. I think this build should be pinned to this section as it's an excellent guide to improving and correcting the Base kit. Plus all the info on the specific subjects of the kits would be helpful too.

Fanatic work Nick Belbin  .

I'm working on building one of these escorts myself and will use a similar approach to the falsh floor.

I'm bewildered why there was no effort to include the swaged aera's on the floor of this kit.

It's such a distinctive part of the Mk1 escort , especially in rally or race guise.

thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Derek, there's some pretty spectacular work going on in your diorama.

Welcome to the forums, Boreham (great name!!) and I feel privileged to have received your first post.

Bit of an update . . .

I got my Hurricane finished at last - that took a few months, as long as the Escorts will have been by the time they're finished. I needed a quick build so I embarked on an out-of-the box Alley Cat Vampire Mk1, another for my 501 Squadron theme. Trouble is that it didn't quite go to plan so that's another kit on the back burner.

However, I'm now back on the Escorts - there won't be any pictures until next week. I've taken this week off for a complete modelling fix so I've been working on the cars and a spot of railway modelling rejuvenating my N gauge model of Thornbury. (I started that fifteen years ago!)

Before the Vampire was started, I flocked the carpet of the Roger Clark car after spraying both floorpans black. Trouble is that it looked far too plush so I gave it a dousing of dilute PVA to calm it down. I wasn't too sure about it but left it. Since then we've had the Avon Show and I saw a couple of these models there - now I'm not sure if I've wasted a lot of time 'cause you can't see a lot of the interior!

I've resumed with the body shells - I've done quite a bit of work on these after realising how many of the car's characteristics were missing. Some of these would be hidden on the rally car, but will be pretty important on the Alan Mann car. I won't go into details now as pictures will help show what I'm blabbing on about. I had hoped to have the cars primed today but some of the work took a bit longer than expected (will I never learn?!) - I keep getting pin holes under Mr Surfacer which only surface(!) when sanding down.

And just in case, I decided I'd dry fit the windows into the shell to see if there might be any problems with the fit. Oh boy! Gaps on top of the side windows even with them 'clicked' into the frames. But worse was a one millimetre gap on the nearside side of the windscreen! I've not read about this on the only other web build I've seen on this kit. I'm hoping that by separating the windows from each other that this will cure the issue.

Until next week . . .

Well, a bit later than planned - the pinholes continued to plague me but I think we're about there now.

The bodyshells have had various modifications made to them: I've deepened the chin by about a millimetre in the middle with a continuous shallow curve to the sides and added a lip. Slots through which the bumper irons mount to the chassis have been cut as well as the holes for the bumper mounting bolts front and rear added. The seam where the front wings meet the front panel have also been added and caused me as much grief as the pinholes!

First attempts:

Escort-MkI-Two-front-panels

The lovely colour is from the evening sun - pinholes abound with some pretty dodgy seam work!

And after some further effort on the front panels:

Escort-MkI-Front-Panel-Roger-Clark-

Escort-MkI-Front-Panel-Alan-Mann-

Much of this won't be so noticeable on the Clark car simply because of bumpers and lights that will be mounted, but on the naked Mann car they'll be far more obvious (I hope!!).

In the end, I wasn't happy with the carpeting on the rally car so it was removed after quite a few hours soaking in water. I decided to be a bit more patient this time doing just a pair of footwells at a time and allowing 24 hours to dry. Then adding a second coat - I'm far happier with this:

Escort-MkI-Floorpan-INTERIORS

I also had a look at the front and screen window rubbers. They look too square and pronounced to me so I spent some time rounding the edges (after, left, and before, right).

Escort-MkI-Screen-Rubbers

While waiting for filler and primers to dry, I've been getting on with general tidying up of parts and making two more pairs of inner wings.

I'm still hoping I can get these done for Telford

Nick, I have to admit that I found this new 'easier' image posting software much less intuitive to use!

I followed your first link which appeared to work (it did if it's the correct pic below!)

Then in the photobucket Share Menu choose 'direct'. Then in the post here clicked the Insert other media tab, & selected Insert Image from other URL & pasted the copied 'Direct' URL from PB. It seems to work!

Glad this is back on the go. I must admit I have sort of abandoned this forum since the update to the software. I just don't like it. The old Mobile version, which I mostly view this site via was so much better in my opinion.

I will be sure to check in more often to keep up to date with the progress on this build.

Morning Nick,

Sorry somehow missed your post y'day. That's weird about the links, I simply followed the first one in your post. At least I tought I did!!

Anyway, they're coming along nicely & the carpet looks great! Really hope they make Telford. Which will be more than any of my models, given this daft new only 4 people allowed in per branch for set up arrangement...

This project is really beginning to do my head in!!!!

I was looking at the etch part of the radiator grill this morning with a view to cutting a tiny pice of the top web in the centre to allow for the bonnet release catch to be put in. Trouble is, the grill has one 'column' missing meaning that a vertical 'web' is central rather than a space!!!!!!!!! Remembering that I'd seen an upgrade set, I had another quick gander. That has the same problem.

The instructions show the photo-etch parts for the boot lock and FORD lettering mysteriously appearing between pages 10 and 11 with no call out.

Why are the windscreen wipers different lengths??

Why do the chromed light bases have to be filled with paint in recesses rather than just a piece of clear plastic that can be painted more easily??

Nick (in a very grumpy mood!!!) :raincloud:
