F4u
Hi all, Thinking of going to this event and as I have never been was wondering apart from the aircraft blasting down the runway is there anything else going on ? Anybody else been ? Guy
Irish 251
There are quite a number of other preserved aircraft at the airfield as well, that you can get close to, plus some sales stands on the day. It's a very good day out (and that's from someone who flew from DUB to BHX to get there!). https://www.flickr.com/photos/24101413@N03/albums/72157646410910020
F4u
Thanks Irish looks like a good day , I take it you buy tickets on the gate ? Guy
Red five
Whatever you do take ear protection. Those lightnings will completely zap your hearing to a load hum when they put their after burners on! Bloody good fun. Highly recommended event.

cathasatail
,I take it you buy tickets on the gate ? Indeed you can- they also have a selection of flying large RC aircraft- last year they had a huge Vulcan from the LMA. They also tend to have flypasts-last year it was a BBMF Spitfire. There are many aircraft open around the airfield which you can go in- they even open up some aircraft after they've done their taxi runs (such as the vc10 and the canberra). Furthermore, each group tends to sell a few bits and pieces to raise money for their aircraft- such as the Buccaneer Aviation Group, whose very nice t-shirt I am wearing right now And as was noted by previous commenters, they have a few stalls dotted around, just behind the "crowd line" selling aviation related things, and more importantly for this group- model kits, at a reasonable price. Please take ear protection! The Lightning deafens you regardless - but it's better to avoid any major hearing loss. Sam

Flankerman
FWIW, my pics of when I went in 2014 are here. As Sam advises - take ear defenders!!!!! Ken PS - This is not a zoomed in photo - you really are that close! Edited April 2, 2016 by Flankerman

cathasatail
Don't mind if I do too -Canberra taxying back after a fast-taxi run, they opened this up, i was put at ease when the chap said that the ejector seat was "safe" as all 6ft 3 of me tried to squeeze into the cockpit! (turns out that it's quite tight in there!) This photo has not been zoomed in: one of the more impressive taxi runs was by this Buccaneer-a terrific roar from those engines, you can just imagine the RN Buccaneers taking off from an aircraft carrier! Darth Vader
This has to be on everyone's list of days out. Lightning and Buccaneers down the runway . . Brilliant. Burgers and chips , models, nose sections ,r/c planes , flypasts ,the smell of jet fuel. You never know the Victor might make a break for it again. Fantastic day out
F4u
Hi all, Sorry for another question but is the car parking close to the crowd line? so I know what I can take. It says gates open at 09.00 (typically) so is it 09.00 ? Guy Edited May 24, 2016 by F4u
Darth Vader
You park on the grass next to the runway, literally less than a 2 minute walk. Take your camera and cash and leave the sarnies and flask in the car.
Tony C
I also can recommend Bruntingthorpe, a great day and most amusing to hear the car alarms going off, after the Victor did a run
