Revell 1/16 Rolls Royce Phantom 2 Continental

Recommended Posts

Hi all I won this on ebay and am going to try and do a custom paint job on it, has anyone on here used House of kolors stuff on plastic kits as I've seen a colour I would love to use on this, just a teaser all the chrome on this will be gold leafed ( one of these with solid gold handles and stuff sold for 8.2 million pounds (not I hasten to add in the colour I intend to use)

Hi all well thought I would make a start on ruining another kit and as expected I'm off to a good start, I said I was going to do all the chrome on this in gold leaf, I stupidly thought hey let's try guilding over the chrome may get a shinier gold effect, BIG mistake, the gold leaf won't stick to the chrome (or more accurately the size wont) took the chrome off but the gold leaf still won't stick, so I've primed it now, hopefully that will sort the problem.

Hi all well the gold leaf sticks now but I couldn't get a good shine on it (its too soft as soon as you try to buff it (however gentle you are)it rubs off) so I've had to settle for imitation gold leaf (it's a bit tougher) I think it looks much better.

This is the main colour I'm doing it (not even sure if I will be adding another colour yet) I think the gold looks good with it, opinions please?

Hi all well i was looking at a poacher build of this car and (although it's a 1/8 kit do twice the size of this) I thought I could add more detail to the engine so I've removed a bit moulded to the engine (not sure what the part is) but I've seen it in a lot more detail on the poacher kit and I think it is a fairly easy bit to improve (I'm not saying this will end up like a poacher kit but I am going to try and add what detail I can)

Hi all revell put the location tab for this part but for some reason didn't make the part.

I've fabricated it also the other bits which are attached to the sump (don't know what any of the parts are) but they help fill empty spaces, they are not exactly right the black box thingy with 2 nuts on the top should have 3 but I've not got any small enough, but I figure it's better than having nothing there.

Hi all here is the next update, progress may slow down a bit as I'm waiting for some alclad gold (hoping I looks shinier than the gold leaf)

Hi all done the seats now, I quite like the used leather look, I've tried not to go too far, I want it to look cared for.

That's a really sterling job on those seats.

If you haven't actually covered them in leather, then please tell us all how you did it!

My only suggestion - paint the front seat bases a different colour to highlight the leather.

Roy.

Thanks Roy I take that as a great compliment coming from you, I will sort the bottom of the seats, they are primed then painted with very watered down vallejo yellow oCher so it looks very patchy then very thinned humbroll 62 then unthinned humbroll 63 whilst that's still wet scrunched up some clingfilm and randomly dab it till it gets to the effect I wanted, then varnished with satin varnish.

Hi all I was asked by a few people how I did the leather so incase anyone is interested here's how I did it.

First I primed it

16itpy1.jpg

Then a very watered down coat of yellow ocher (I only used vallejo as I didn't have any yellow ocher in enamel, but enamel should work too)

24qmg50.jpg

Once that's dry a very thin coat of humbroll 62

spyuc3.jpg

Then a normal coat of humbroll 63 then whilst it's still wet, scrunch up some clingfilm film and dab it on the paint till you get the desired effect.

mmyg7o.jpg

Then a coat of satin varnish

If I wanted to take it further I could scratch the paint then rub some buff coloured pastel into the scratch, brush it off then varnish it again.

I could go on and pluck holes in it put oil stains and all sorts

It's dead easy .

Oh well I've got another problem, we're baby sitting our daughters puppy (I can't be angry he's such a sweetie) being as how I've not had a dog for 20 odd years and my missus not had one for even longer, we're a bit out of practise, the dog is tiny it's a sausage dog he's 16 inches long so imagine my surprise that he can get parts off a 30 inch high table. The fuel cap is missing a few other bits are chewed (not too bad they can't be fixed) ( some of the ship parts I don't want to think about (gulp the Soliel may end up shelved) I made a concerted effort to stick to just this build to try and get my confidence back and although I can't get a good gold effect on it so far, I'm pleased with how it's going, I may end up just spraying the gold with gold paint or doing it high gloss black, it's funny I would be so cross if a human had damaged these kits but I melt when I look at frankie, I do love dogs, I look at this tiny animal and I just can't understand how some people can hurt innocent little creatures, I look at him and my heart melts

Hi! all, well not to change the habit of a lifetime here is the progress on another ruined kit. I tried to use gold leaf but could not get enough shine on it, so I then tried alclad, which turned out rubbish, I've now tried ak real gold, the results are the best so far but still totally rubbish.

Donkeys years ago, I gilded the throne and canopy for the Sultan of Brunei - no kidding...

If you use a good gilders size and let it dry for about an hour, then lay on the leaf, just gently polish it with a 'yellow' duster.

It looks, and IS, real gold.

OK, a bit ostentatious, but here's a pic of the bits I did on the throne.

The canopy on the top is 8 - sided, and is a prayer to the Sultan - heaven only knows (no pun intended) what it says.

I was told quite strictly - follow the art work EXACTLY - a wrong 'blob' could turn the prayer into an insult!

On the 'lower' section, I did the embellishments all round as well...

Hi Roy, you are a surprising guy, I tried polishing the gold leaf with velvet, I could not get it to shine before it rubbed off, let's face it I'm a rubbish modeler, I truly wish I had you're skill.

No - you TALK rubbish...

You are a GREAT modeller.

Don't ever sell yourself short.

The world is full of dull, uninteresting numpties who do nothing but stare at the tv or use their thumbs on a 'phone.

Keep building lovely models.

If you get little feedback, it's the loss of the people who read the threads and never comment.

You are among the best on this forum.

Don't think otherwise.

Roy.

Roy, I think of you as a elite master of this craft, so believe me when I say I really appreciate that comment, I still say I'm rubbish, I seem to have had more failiers in the models I've built of late than successes, I realise your not a ship man, but I am and I can't even do an even half decent job of them, I really don't know what's wrong with me recently. Regardless of modeling whatever I do seems to go wrong.

Hi all here is quite a big update, I'm starting to not mind the non metallic looking gold, I think it goes quite well with the green.
