Abandoned Project
Collecting various SAR helicopters in 1/72 and have gone from building 1 CH-149 to 2 NAWSARH's! In getting the right parts I've bought 3 kits plus some spare parts to build 2 helo's and I was thinking "what do I do with the leftovers???" Then I had a happy accident. I found a spare radome in my Sea King! Then I thought of this...
hendie
I'd remove the smaller radome at the back - I don't think it'll have enough power to lift that big one underneath and the smaller one at the same time
Abandoned Project
LOL! will remove the the larger one instead
Ex-FAAWAFU
Your design (giant early tea warning radome excluded) isn't unlike one of the designs that was put forward. The winner, though, will have the radar on the side: http://www.helis.com/database/news/merlin_aew/
Abandoned Project
I am well aware of the winning design Ex-FAAWAFU, but I am not a fan of the horrid (IMHO) asymmetry of such a layout. My 'whif' Merlin AEW will be based on the idea of what do you do with an ex-RAF Merlin that the Marines don't need as a junglie? Please note that I am open advice/ideas from any ex-RNAS members out there.
Martian
I'd remove the smaller radome at the back - I don't think it'll have enough power to lift that big one underneath and the smaller one at the same time Silly man! Martin
paul_c
Nice little WIF this! I always liked this concept for the 'Crowsnest' Merlin. It makes more sense using the lighter utility airframe, especially as the whole system can be rolled in and out as a role fit. Mind you, this ex-RAF Merlin rigger is still mourning the fact his lovely Mk3's are now wearing RN titles!
moaning dolphin
Great idea, and like some others have said it did have some semblance of reality, although I can't help thinking the CofG would be too far aft in the real thing. Would need some serious balance weights up front! I'd remove the smaller radome at the back - I don't think it'll have enough power to lift that big one underneath and the smaller one at the same time OK two days on I get what you mean! Abandoned Project
A little bit of progress. Going for a six blade rotor.

paul_c
Wow, that's quite some upgrade! You adding blade fold to that head??
Abandoned Project
No! I'm not that good! This is my first model in years. As I said at the beginning I am supposed to be just collecting at the moment and getting ready to build but couldn't resist starting this one as my WHIF machine seems to be stuck in top gear. I even thought about adding a fourth engine. Any thoughts on the two radars? It looks alright to me...
moaning dolphin
On a technicality the Seaking Mk2 had the spine radome fitted but I think that was just an empty shell. In reality it would only operate the one (open to discussion!), so a Merlin would probably have that radar removed, then the radar cover would be removed and used as a paddling pool by the maintenance crew when embarked to hot climates! But as we are detaching from reality, it looks fine (could be a ballast weight stowage I suppose!), not sure where the 4th engine would go, but then having had to deal with certain aircrew I could suggest somewhere to stick it! Keep the fun coming looking forward to see where this build goes! Bob
Abandoned Project
I am a civvy who is easily confused about the difference between the blue kestrel radar and the searchwater AEW radar and the pictures of the prototype AEW merlin show both radars fitted, so who knows eh? As for the fourth engine I would replace the top engine with two parallel engines
Ex-FAAWAFU
4th engine means you'd have to seriously beef up the gearbox. But hey, no-one said this has to actually fly!
paul_c
A fourth engine...... You could always put it next to the central number 2 engine where the APU currently sits. Just got to find somewhere for the dinky little APU to go then!
Abandoned Project
I have decided that with a six blade rotor, two radars and a possible four engines, I shall call this helo 'Peregrine'. I must say a big thank you to all who have contributed so far.
pinky coffeeboat
I could chime in here with a lot of comments, but it's a whiff and so I won't. I'll enjoy watching this model come to life. Four engines...six main blades...seriously beefed up gearbox...crabs mourning the loss of "their" green Merlins... Lol 😊 Jeff
Abandoned Project
Seems like the general concencus says Peregrine is getting a fourth engine then? 😊 back to work then! Edited March 18, 2016 by dadofthree
Abandoned Project
Decided to save the fourth engine idea for some nine blade nonsense! Well what do you do with a spare fuselage and nine blades when you have got to make a new rotor head? Plus I would like to keep this one realistic. Abandoned Project
please ignore my previous post as this will be having four engines
moaning dolphin
Instead of chopping up two rotor heads why not try a bit of contra rotating nonsense, then you can chop the back end off!
Abandoned Project
The problem then is making new blades that face in the opposite direction, but an idea I did consider before performing rotor head surgery. plus the new rotor head is for my 'nine blade nonsense' in the Whatif section.
Abandoned Project
I have decided to take this project over to the What-if section which is better suited to this.
