phil1
I've had this model in my possession since the late 1980s, my dad put it together when I was a kid and its deteriorated to the point where I considered chucking it out - but rather than that I think I'd rather have a crack at restoring it The model is missing its horizontal stabilizers although I think I know the location of one. one engine has snapped off and the landing gear is mostly history. My intention is to strip the model completely and sand down the individual parts i couldnt sand away all of the paint as it was ingrained into the plastic. I used some paint stripper but this weakened the plastic and some parts snapped like all my models I like to display them flying so the gear will be up, this requires filler for this area
fatalbert
Looking good there but please don't call it an Avro 146 😕.They are Bae 146's or Avro RJ's (and I say that under sufferance)I always thought that If they had to re brand them they should have called them DH RJ's.They were designed and built at Hatfield after all (old DH works). phil1
wings ready to go back on. obviously i have to bear in mind that the wings are meant to droop and will have to glue them at a angle some severe gaps between the joins. also plastic is very weak and ready to snap in places so a lot has been strengthened with milliput (wing) the rear was too curved so ive straightened it out a bit and extended the length ever so slightly Im going to create a little bit more detail on the surface and fill those gaps at the same time this is me creating the missing wing fairing looks a bit messy but will sand down nicely..... same here a bit more detail going in (above) - that long line that extends from the tail needs to extend further, it also needs to be a lot more straight note the port side wing.... ive somehow managed to trim the front wing back which is quite noticeable -more work for another day

viscount806x
Looking good there but please don't call it an Avro 146 .They are Bae 146's or Avro RJ's (and I say that under sufferance)I always thought that If they had to re brand them they should have called them DH RJ's.They were designed and built at Hatfield after all (old DH works). Back in the mid 1970s when I were nobbut a lad, we aircraft engineers enjoying the Viscount at short runwayed LBA were taunted by hints of fleet replacement with the, then proposed but still as yet unbuilt, HS146. I think the Avro RJ name was an attempt to distance the design from the rather poor reliability reputation of the Bae 146 at the time.
phil1
apologies for lack of update, been away on holiday as you can see the detail on the top of the fuselage is more refined i have created the stabilizer on the right from scratch as this is one of the parts that had snapped off years ago and was lost. the original one on the left looks bigger however they are both the same size. a bit of etching and it will be ready to be placed on the tail etched in some detail and the tail is almost complete once the tail is complete im priming the model without the engines. the engines are in a bit of a state and need some massive adjustments. also as they are fragile and small i think i would only end up snapping them off during the paintjob forgot to mention that the horizontal edge that leads from the tail plane has been extended and made to look straight

Giorgio N
Love this thred for two reasons: 1) I've often flown on Swissair's 146s on the Milan-Zurich-London City route and always had a soft spot for the 146 family 2) I've often rebuilt old models and I'm glad to see other modellers doing the same, you're doing a great job here ! phil1
the tail is now complete and just prior to that i give it a coat of primer had to make i few alterations to the scratch built part of the tail as it didn't quite match up. extended it by adding on a piece of scrap plastic and sanded the front edge back about half a centremetre. also increased the thickness and etched in new detail. now everything is ready for primer all primed and ready for white gloss. I've decided to go ahead and do druk air of bhutan airlines as the decals are available. wish i hadn't bothered with masking the wings as they are actually white also

phil1
latest progress - the bottom has been painted a very dark gloss blue. all metallic details have also been taken care of now. Just awaiting decals and will crack on with engines when I get the chance. The engines need a lot of work as the front area is not 'circular'. think this is due to the age of the plastic and a bit of deforming when removing paint anyway... quite pleased with the results, especially the T-tail considering one side was scrap plastic.

Rob G
Very nice. One of my favourite airliners. They were used in large numbers in Australia, and I used to be able to watch them on finals from the kitchen window - QANTASlink and Ansett liveries in the main, with freight versions as well. Haven't seen one for quite a while now.

phil1
time to get this underway again. The engines are in terrible condition, the paint stripper has weakened the plastic and bits are missing. Ive had to fill the interior with milliput to strengthen it   I will either have to drill a new hole or keep it flat and try some 3-D effect, either way its time to be creative - ideas welcome!   the rear also.   2 engines need to be extended where the plastic disintegrated, ive poked a toothpick in the gap for a start....   the toothpick is basically a guide and with excess milliput i can shape it to look like the engine at the top   got the basic shape anyway. my greatest fear now is that ive lost the 4th engine!! hopefully it will turn up otherwise it will be another scratch built job
Romeo Alpha Yankee
I would never have thought to use tooth picks and milliput. I have enough card stock lying around, so I would make repairs with that. Â Your repairs loo the part Phil
