dude_gan_ainm
About 1.3 billion years ago two black holes swirled closer and closer together until they crashed in a furious bang, their head-on impact came as the two were approaching the speed of light. The merger gave rise to a new black hole and created a gravitational field so strong that it distorted spacetime in waves that spread throughout space. This distortion of my spacetime can be the only reason why I'm building a Squirrel. My yin and yang, all reason is gone.Never built a MACH2 kit before & haven't built a helicopter model in about 35ish years so should be a lot of fun - well maybe only as we know it.Enough faff faffing about - here's the box, kit, instructions & decals. I'll start this in a few days, how bad.Toodle pip,Jimbob. Edited February 13, 2016 by dude_gan_ainm
Martian
The usual Mach2 "transparencies" I see! A very attractive helicopter though and I look forward to seeing what you make of it. Martin

Romeo Alpha Yankee
I have a couple of these in the stash. Will be interested to see how you go. Good luck. From what I've seen of mach2 kits, you'll need it.Matt Mach 2 kits are getting better build wise with the later releases. The clear parts are still not as good as others but there are techniques around to make them look better.
dude_gan_ainm
Thanks chaps for the encouragement & best of luck to everyone building a chopper. Vicarage Vee - Right behind you cheering from the sidelines. I have one in the stash having waited for an AS350 for ages, I will happily follow in your footsteps here! I hear ya brother - been waiting too. When I got back into modelling I saw there was a Maku kit but wasn't available anymore but then the quality was poor by all accounts. This MACH2 kit isn't too bad - I was expecting worse after hearing of their older kits, especially the glazing.Still lots of cleanup & scribing & other unknowns to discover - yeeeeah.I still haven't started - mainly down to an injury,so the start will be mainly done monohand (if that's an actual word). At least it's my good hand. The plan is to convert this AS.350 into a AS.355 Twin Squirrel & a police version with camera & searchlight.I'll be using a Max Decals sheet for the Irish GARDA 255 from 2000 or thereabouts.I guess MACH2 might bring out a AS.355 sometime in the future but I'll give it a bash anyway.Hopefully everything will work out as planned. Vicarage Vee
Ah yes, the Miku kit.... I looked and looked for one, saw one go for silly money, then saw a build of one on the web.. decided to wait a bit longer for something Squirrel-shaped. I honestly think that had I put my mind to it and given the time I'd have made something better from scratch. Mach 2 all the way!
moaning dolphin
I've not heard many good things about Mach 2 but I will reserve judgment until I actually build one, in the mean time i'll pull up a chair and see how you pull this into shape! Well I managed to get my hands on a Miku kit about 2 years ago, now that the Mach2 kit is out I don't think i will get any where near what I paid for it now, I suppose I will just have to build it So Jimbob, have you started? I want to see how this baby goes together! :D

I want to see how this baby goes together! :D Hi TrojanT,it would be nice to see a Mike Squirrel beside a MACH2.Theyre a pretty rare kit but your right the MACH2 puts it in the shade. These short run MACH2 kits will be rare in a few years too. I cut a few parts from the sprues & roughly cleaned up some flash to have a quick dry fit & it's not bad.The plastic is real soft, even the glazing.I'll micromesh part of the glazing to see if it can be improved.I also noticed a camera & floodlight on the sprues.I'll cut off & tidy up what I need/may use & work from there.Skids look a bit rough.Happy enough so far,Jimbob. dude_gan_ainm
Got some time to clean up the flash & whatnot - the soft plastic makes it pretty easy & so far the fit is grand (I think theres a locating pin in the tail).Panel lines are a little shallow in places so a light scribing should get it right & I'll add a few more. The topside of the horizontal stabilisers is flat so I used a file & scriber to give it a curved aerofoil shape followed by rescribing the lost panel lines.First one can be seen in the photo below. The instrument consul is basic so its up to yourself to detail as you wish.More later chaps, Jimbob.

dude_gan_ainm
looks like your going to be spending most of your time cleaning it up You can say that again Ilking.Looking at some of the other builds I'm dead jealous - you guys have instruments in your cockpits.Anyway the cleanup continues.I rescribed over the faint panel lines & added new ones for the AS.355 version.Gotta fill in a few lines not needed, deepened the engine access steps & grooved out under the cabin floor & seats so I can add a little weight to ensure we don't end up with a tailsitter.I'll let ya know how much I added when the time comes. Those rear seat look a bit lopsided - maybe the MACH2 gyroscope was off that day?Heres a shot of the progress so far - still happy with the MACH2! Killingholme
Looks good so far, looks like decent short run plastic. But Mach2 clear parts... well, I'm praying for you... Will
heloman1
It can only get better from here on in Jimbob. I reckon with some hard work (gentle rubbing), those clear parts could shine up quite well. Colin
foresterab
Will be watching this one...mean to pick up a couple of these kits once I clean one or two unbuilt kits off the shelf first. Good start on things though especially cleaning up the flash. foresterab
CliffB
Looks like this will be a great build to watch I built the Mach2 Do.26 a few years ago and transformed the transparancies simply by dipping in Klear (Future) - a surprisingly easy fix! Hope this might work for you too Jimbob... Cliff
Jabba
Nice start, especially the clean up. I was looking at getting one of these at Yeovilton yesterday for my stand, but chickened out. Will follow the build to see how they go together, and then possibly get one.
dude_gan_ainm
Thanks for the encouragement & tips chaps,I havn't made much progress - traveling, back to work & life getting in the way but on the upside I have my left hand back in use.I cleaned up the rotor blades, rotor hub parts, tailrotor & instrument consul & also dug out more plastic under the floor to fit more weight.Cut a groove behind the cab & cut out some shapes in this area which are on the AS.355.I've since filled in a few panel lines & self inflicted mistakes. I gave the engine section a quick clean up to show the fit but I wont be using these parts. I hope to get stuck in again soon, Jimbob.
