bootneck
Crystal Cruises has announced a plan to take over the maintenance costs of the storied ocean liner SS United States, once “America's Flagship,” with the intention of conducting a nine-month feasibility study of a refit for seagoing service.
Martian
Potentially very good news! Martin
Rob G
Interesting, but unlikely. There's no way that a 60+ year old hull will meet modern safety and stability regulations. Possibly if they registered her in Guyana, but not the US. Smells of publicity stunt to me.
bentwaters81tfw
I doubt they'll get insurance on the hull for passenger use.
Panzer Vor!!!
60 Years old engines??? It will be cheaper to build a new ship D
Julien
When they say refit I suspect it would be a near gutting of the ship, but still potential saving over a new build so I would not rule it out. They were built to last in those days. However without a full inspection you don't know and that is what it looks like they were doing. With regard to the engines they will no doubt be replaced. A modern diesel/electric plant should fit in there no problem. As mentioned in the article as well as potential cost savings there is the Jones Act to consider. They are in no doubt it would seem that compliance will be a massive issue, hence the employments of a senior ex Coastguard official to manage the project. It would also seem from the article that all the asbestos has been removed which was a major undertaking. In addition it would bring Crystal a shed load of publicity to reuse her, and then to be able to offer short sea trips along the US coast. In all it might not be the pipe dream people think it is.
Rob 1
60 Years old engines??? It will be cheaper to build a new ship D They could always cut a hole in the side and pop a couple of new diesel generators in there – now where have I heard that recently Edited February 12, 2016 by Rob 1

Alan P
I used to drive past it a lot, it's in pretty awful state. Good luck to them getting it sailing again, but it's going to be a big and very expensive job.
ShipbuilderMN
SS United States. I saw this ship leaving Southampton on a number of occasions - magnificent sight! Sadly, there is very little interest in merchant ships of that era, so I would consider a resurection extremly unlikely! https://youtu.be/fxIgkgBbpQg
