White Turkey...1/48 Grumman TBM-1C Avenger ASW USN - NEW PICS ADDED

So, something at least a bit different happy.gif

Initially my dad wanted to build a RN Mk.I with the Hobby Boss kit. After examining the kit we found out that the intended version wasn´t possible oob, no bubble side windows, no observer seat behind the pilot, no cowl gun. So, change of plan, used decals from the Italeri reboxing of the AM kit for the Hobby Boss one.
Besides the decals almost completely oob. Added seatbelts, cut off the wrong wing gun stubs and drilled holes, EZ Line for the aerials, engraved the missing rivets for the the oil cooler shutters on the side cowls. Painted with Gunze and Tamiya acrylics.

The decals for the nose numbers came from the sparebox because the Italeri ones were way too big.

As it seems there´s only one partial pic of this aircraft. There it looks completely white. Fellow Hyperscale modeller Modeldad provided some info that all-white avengers weren´t completely uncommon in the Atlantic ASW role. So the model became only white, never seen that before on a pic or model happy.gif
The model shows an a/c of the composite squadron VC-58 on the escort carrier USS Block Island in January 1944. Later in March/April the unit transferred to the USS Guadalcanal and flew night missions.

Hello,Reini78 - My compliments on your father's beautiful build of the 'Avenger'.I love the quality and detail of the paint and finishing work and commend the subtle weathering. He is a fine modeller and it's always a pleasure to view his quality work.:) All the best,Paul.

Beautiful! Always rather liked the Avenger, and I'm a fan of white schemes (one of the many reasons for my love of Eastern Front subjects). That's definitely one I should add to my need-to-do list.

Regards,

Jason

Its a great job, big well done! How did it go together, any problems? I have the same kit which I want to model as a Royal Navy MkII, you've mentioned the issues but any thoughts about to go around creating some round side windows? It's the main thing thats stopping me from starting my kit ( and a lack of space!)

The molding is nice and the fit great, no real problems putting the thing together. One thing I remember, when my dad glued together the wing "stumps" with the rest of the wings there was a bit of tension in that joint points but nothing to overcome with some clamps.

Concerning the round windows, you can buy the Italeri kit which includes the windows for a British or Kiwi version, besides that I can´t think of an easy way. Maybe there are also some vac-form ones available, haven´t searched for that yet.
