Airfix Boeing 707 reissue

Recommended Posts

Just bought one of these in its elegant BOAC livery, including my copyright fee to Boeing! Before I start, does anyone have any observations on accuracy etc.? From what I can see from photos the nose is too oval in section and the fairings above and below the tailplanes should not be anywhere near as pronounced. The fin also looks too deep front to back. (Think that's "chordwise"...)

Here are a couple of photos from my old Olympus to show what I mean...

Any observations would be gratefully recieved!! (I quite like the raised panel lines...)

You are right.

The Airfix 707 is not the most accurate kit of this iconic airliner.

I have one in my stash too and I am also thinking of methods to improve it.The nose is too pointy and narrow. It should be rounder.

This could maybe fixed with putty filled in the fuselage halves and then sand it to shape.

Or find a replacement nose or cockpit replacement part and try the above method.

As for panellines or fairings, sanding them away or make them less prominent on the fuselage, should be an easy fix.

I am not a "707 Specialist" so what more issues there are with this kit compared to the original,I do not know, but finding a truly accurate kit is nearly impossible...except for the Authentic Airliners resin kits.

When it's built, it cannot be mistaken for an accurate 707, but it also cannot be mistaken for anything else either. Don't put it beside an Authentic Airliners kit and it'll be acceptable to anyone other than a true accuracy fanatic.

Thanks chaps, I will see what i can do with this over 50 year old mould, but it would be a shame not to do something or other to improve it - I'm sure I can fix the fuselage issues at least enough so they don't shout "wrong!" at me every time I look at it!

Do not be mistaken by my comment about the kit.Its nice and has its merrits and with some care it can build up nicely.

I will be building mine as well somewhere this year...at least I hope  ,so many projects currently running...

Even if the nose is wrong, it looks more 707-like than the nose on the Minicraft 707! (Which also appears to fit like a kit from the 60s...)

I haven't seen the re-issue but I have an original kit in my stash. I assume the split between the upper and lower wing halves is still on the top surface. Good luck to anyone who tries to make a decent job of that. It can be done but it takes more skill and patience than I have

Apologies for thread hijack. I'm intrigued by your avatar. Is that Wiley Post's high-altitude flying suit?

I found a side on photo on a well known site for airliner photos, I saved the pic then printed it out to 1:144, lots of trial and error in resizing the image. Then I glued the printed image onto some cardboard, then carefully cut around the aircraft, leaving a 707 shape hole. I then used this with the airfix kit to add, and remove to make the shape.

Make sense? Sort of easier to do than discribe!

To be honest this is one of worst kits that I’ve worked on… Only the main frame is attached but it lacks so much for the gaps and they don’t have the same proportions as the first image. Loooooots of sand are required and creativity also. This 707 kit is so damn basic and not accurate at all! I’ve wanted to make it with the classic Lufthansa’s livery but for what I could see so far it will be a nightmare

It is what it is. I put one together last year (still not finished 😀 but I found the construction fairly OK. It is a 60 year old kit so that needs to be factored into your expectations.

As @Eric Mc points out, the Airfix Boeing 707 is sixty years old and you cannot really compare it with modern standards.

If you are prepared to put in the work you can still make a good model from it - see this as an example.

I have 3 of them under construction, but these are on the "long term" list and are currently stalled.

The kit is very old and has its fair share of problems.

It can be built into a decent model but it takes time and care.

But this is (at least for me) the charm of those kits, using modern modelling skills and items to turn these kits into a nice model.

I modified the engines already to get a better look out of them and also replaced the cockpit with a window part from DACO as Viking did on his marvelous build.

It improves the look significantly.
