porsche 956 and porsche 962 mashed kits

So this Is what I have finally started to work on.

Revells porsche 956 is actually the porsche 962 short tail, so with that in mind I want to make the fortuna lemans car from 85/6 so I need a 962 with a longtail on, also revell make a 956 rothmans car (again same body so it's the short tail 962) and try and pass it off as the nurburgring fastest ever lap car from the 83 I think, the year my be wrong, but that car was a 956 with a short tail. You can proably guess where I am going with this now, I am going to take a tamiya 956 and a revell "956" and swap over the rear ends to a point of where I am happy. So the tamiya car will be made into a 956 with a short tail for the nurburgring fastest lap car or even the test car livery.

So the tamiya front revell rear car will be one of these

And the revell front tamiya rear car will look like this

lemans-24-hours-of-le-mans-1986-17-brun-

And this is where I am at, I have sliced the revell car up and found the rear end of the tamiya car is slightly wider, not an issue as it's easily fixed, thus making the revell rear too narrow for the tamiya car, again not too much of an issue.

A couple of things with the rear decks (you may already be aware of?). Firstly, check the top of the wheel opening. The 956 were generally a flatter top compared to the more rounded/circular 962. You can see this in the Fortuna and Rothmans pics you posted. Additionally, and a total pain for the types were the variety of positions the various and numerous NACA ducts were placed. They are certainly not all the same for just 956 or just 962. Team to team, race to race were different.

My plans are pretty simple, with the widths the mid section on the tail fits each car fine it mainly on 2 flat areas to the side where bits need taking out or adding. With taking out bits I will be taking from the edge just before it rolls over to the side, adding will be done in a similar way with styrene strips.

And rich I can honestly say I didn't even notice the wheel arches but there's another job to do now which shouldn't be too hard as for the ducts I think I will have to get more reference to find out where they go

Right so a few more bits done to the engine covers

I striped the tamiya cover of the old paint so it looks a bit rough now also I have been doing a few more checks and have decided that the arched part of the engine covers need modifying too, so with the revell rear body work I have cut down the middle and pulled it tighter also I have made a few more cuts to pull the body down to fit the tamiya front end. The complete opposite has been done on the tamiya rear cover by adding bits to force it wider and taller but from the dry fittings (I have done lots) it all fits much better now

Right moving on with my demon love child porsches

The floors pans have been chopped to fit each part they are for so revell front with tamiya rear ect. The thing that almost tripped me up was one needed to be made shorted to fit the other longer, something I didn't envisage while making the covers fit

There are quite a few more mods needed for the rear parts of the floors to be near enough right, persinally I went into this thinking it would be a quick cut here quick cut there and it would fit together, how wrong I was

Thanks Roger it's been more work than I thought it was going to be bit hopefully the results will be worth it

Right 1 car or the 2 is very close to getting some primer on it here's the mock up that I did earlier just to check fit and finish, there is a little more to do on the engine cover like rounding the wheel arch tops (thanks for that info rich)

Thanks for the comments guys and Simon the tamiya car I bought from eBay in an almost finished condition so I I have done to it is stripped iit back to plastic and cut it up, most of the basic ground work had already been done.

So the car.

Where the revell front half and tamiya rear half car has been moving forward me than the opposite combination or car it has progressed alot more, with that I have grey primed and taken off any bad bit and then white primed it so it is now Ready for a bit of gloss white

I'm also currently building a 956 Shaun which will be the Tamiya 1/24th Cannon kit converted to the Rothmans Jacky Ickx/Derek Bell No.1 car.

I've lopped off the doors and front end though for my attempt at a front end scratch build. It's taking a lot of reverse engineering and styrene/tubing work from the walk around pictures I have but I'm slowly getting there.

I'll post my own work in progress build once I get into it a little more but I'll be watching your thread in anticipation. :)

Edit: Also if you're going for the Rothmans livery, which white paint are you thinking of using?

  • 3 weeks later...

So I have in the little bits of time I have had in between finishing off the last few steps of my mp4-30 build I have got on with putting some decals on to this

Be warned alot of pictures and not many words

For the age of the decals, about 20 years old, I was very cautious about how hot the water I used was and how much/if I used microsol I used

And all done bar a couple that need doing after a few more bits are painted later
