Tamiya Krupp Protze with 3.7cm Pak 1/35 35259

Picked up cheap on the internet, an old kit I know, but passes my time in this terrible winter weather.

I wish I could get the faces better as I feel they let the model down, however I do like them in, as it gives a better sense of scale.

Any comments to help me improve will be welcomed.

I absolutely know how to paint faces in 1/35th. But knowing is not the same as doing! I am still pretty useless! I've watched lots of videos, and they make it look easy, but it's not. Different techniques suit different people. Look on t'internet and find the right technique for you. BTW probably the most important factor is the choice of paint.

Excellent work. That's a great finish with nice subtle weathering and wear and tear. I've been painting figures for years and I'm still trying new techniques especially to the faces. I can only mirror the comments from Badder that having followed painting blogs, they make it look so easy but never show you how to mix or blend paints...only the finish. The paints do help a lot and I've had better finishes since i started using Vallejo (a face painting box set was a great investment) and some Citadel too. However, I find the quality of the face is a big factor too. Tamiya make great kits but their figure faces can be flat and expressionless. I can't paint a smile or a frown on a face that's flat. I can use good paints to pick out the detail in a detailed face. I've read of many modellers replacing the expressionless kit head with one from, say, Hornet heads. Apologies for the long reply.

Thanks Badder and Lee for comments on figures, by coincidence I have just purchased a Vallejo set of paints and a wash, I will be doing the Tamiya LRDG shortly which has a number of figures so, hopefully, I can get them a bit better. I do like the figures, as it gives a sense of scale, might be better with dogs or chickens where the face is not so important.

Hi. Figures do add that human aspect but I know they're tricky. As you've bought the Vallejo, I'd suggest a bottle of their paint thinner too and just play about with the ratio. I started with a drop of paint to a drop of thinner as the Vallejo is quite a thick pigment paint. Is that the LRDG with the 7 Masterbox figures? It's a nice kit and look forward to seeing it finished. As for animals, I bought a German ww2 motorbike and sidecar kit that included a pig for the sidecar (!!)

Thanks again Lee, yes the LRDG has the 7 figures also bought an North African Tower from Fields of Glory Models so will need to try an do my first diorama.
