Okay so time to get back on with this guy!

Ive been sorting out the shoulder pad on the other side, and just generally trying to neaten them up and even them out.

And i also have been trying to sort his back out as its had the least attention so far!

35042527784_4d8978b44c_c.jpg20170519_132424 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I rolled out a flat bit of sculpey,  as a start for creating a flat base for his jetpack and I had to make a cut in it to allow for the armature stand, then i trimmed it.

And i also want a slightly shorter chunkier collar bit to mold into the back piece.

Obviously this is just stage one i want to build it up at the edges and create a flat platform. With the sides im planning on making them like the padded joints which i think will look cool and will make my life easier.

Next I'll build it up more and level it off.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

You know, just when I think this build can't get any better, you go and add something and it just makes a world of difference.

I mean, every part you add, and improve, just seems "right"  and like it belonged there all along.

Thanks guys! :)

And Chief thats not a dumb question, it was pretty much the first one i asked when i first started sculpting!

It does actually unscrew, but a lot of people also dont bother with that and just cut it off but i wanted to be able to fully remove any heavy metal to keep it as light as possible.

I like the much improved shape of the shoulders and especially the back. It has filled out his torso nicely, and he looks like he is wearing armour now.

Thanks dude! Yeah the back was in dire need of attention and i definitely feel is looking more 'space-suity' now

Backpack looks good, don't forget to be paranoid about the space for the helmet!

I was also wondering - how long is the bake going to be for this model? There's a lot of clay in there now.

Cheers Will, yeah i really need to keep that in mind, especially as i want the back lump behind his head flush against it.

As for baking the standard is (iirc) half an hour for every 1/4 inch, but im going to give him a bake just to hold his shape (probably 45 minutes) and then when the alien is down give the whole thing a longer lower temperature bake (for strength) so probably 4-6 hours at half the temperature on the instructions.

And i have actually been sculpting, just building up what will eventually be the foundation for placing my jet pack after all sculptings done.

Once this is leveled off and tidy the edges will be sculpted with the same padding look as the joint covers.

Okay little update!

Got the back smoothed off and evened out a bit more, think thats pretty much where I'll leave it, when the jet packs on I'll just fill it if its not quite even.

Also I've really been thinking about the structure of this and the guys support. The weight is getting towards 4 lb so i was thinking about tentacles and that im going to do a third with some threaded rod going up to his left thigh.

That should be fine then i think especially once I've strengthened the whole thing and built up the foundarion more.

Then once i started fooling around with my original "alien slug creature in a swamp" type ideas the tentacles were feeling a bit like obvious structural after thoughts, so now i have a new idea.

A mass of carnivorous plants with vines, imagine a venus fly trap with teeth and thorny tentacles!

35072605933_165f3c50df_c.jpg20170607_132821 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Im feeling pretty pumped about this as it feels more like classic old school sci fi having a crazy monster plant, and i really like that the it will act as the base also, making it a standalone piece without an obvious framed base.

So next its collar and helmet work.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right, so time to bring this back to life!

I've got all 683 wip pics moved to flickr, and now I'm starting the process of getting all the pictures back into this topic. Its a lot of work but this build is very close to my heart so I want to make sure the wip topic is more than just a load of broken links that tell no one anything! So that work has started.

For now though I do have a proper update, I've started smoothing out and shading the back plate more which is where the backpack will eventually attach.

I've squared off the rounded right edge and corner more

36412220666_b3fc898b6d_c.jpg20170808_133236 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And the left hand corner needs building up more so I've started laying down more sculpey which I'll smooth over

36412215586_bde5f2703c_c.jpg20170808_133554 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

36320880081_0d4ed7cf0d_c.jpg20170808_134351 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So I'll continue with that, want to get it done because Im only going to do a little more detailing on the bit thats at the back of where the helmet will be and then its baking!

Really glad to be back doing this, I think the photobucket thing knocked me into a bit of a lull and I'm feeling so much better now I've got the picture situation on the way to being sorted. So I can assure you there will be an update again soon!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Well when it rains it pours, another update! Got some sculpt time on my lunch break and have just finished leveling and sharpening the edges of the back pack connection pad.

I find the best way to sharpen up the corners is to build it up so it sticks out and looks curved, and then use a scalpel to cut down and make the edge even again, that way you totally avoid rounded corners.

Right so I'm calling that bit done, its not 100% level, in fairness its difficult to get it sorted when its where the bolt attaches, but I'm not too worried as I'll use greenstuff to fill any edges that are not level when the flat back of the backpack connects and give it the same padded effect as with the joint covers.

Next up I'll work on the little bit on top of that thats at the back of the helmet.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Well one thing leads to another, started working on the back of the head bit, and noticed that the righ shoulder pad is a little short compared to the left so I corrected that by adding some sculpey which I blended in and shaped using my ball stylus.

And with that done, I wanted to give the back bit a bit of an angle to break the blockiness of it up a bit, and make the back edges angle in more so its not totally square.

And I've also decided to neaten his wrists up a bit by adding a bit of raised edge, so I made a start on that.

Its only roughly in place at the moment, next up I'll get it mor3e firmly on by blending the edges and smoothing the joins, then its just a matter of getting two neater holes in the bit of armor at the back of the head and I can finally bake him.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right so Ive got the holes in the back bit, ready for wires to go in later

And I got the wrist edging smoothed on and neatened the ends of the arms up a bit.

Aaaand thats it for this guy for now. Im calling it bake time, I'm happy with how he's looking, and anything else I want to add can be added later with greenstuff or kitbashed parts.

So next up, just fill the slight crotch crack hes developed and then I'll whack him in the oven and then I can start on the killer alien plant he's trying to get away from!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right! I've been busy getting the pictures swapped over in this topic from Phototbucket to flickr but I got the sculpt baked yesterday.

Wrapped his head in foil to protect it, and put some foil around the base too just to stop the sticky resin coming out of the pine base into the oven.

37180152706_604e82d260_c.jpg20170921_121647 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then in he goes, one small step for man a giant leap for baked goods :)

Put him in a 130c for about an hour and 20 minutes

36557574753_55beebb9ff_c.jpg20170921_121753 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And this happened!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

37180149836_35aebebefa_c.jpg20170921_122308 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Forgot to take the plastic arm computer bit of him, so annoyed that happened it was perfect! I'm seriously tempted to buy another 1/24 italieri truck accessory set just to get it again, but I'll sort something out before its needed anyway I'm sure, got the alien plant to sculpt yet!

I also had a bit of cracking

36574812603_6281ef7b0f_c.jpg20170922_132348 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The foots the worst but that will be covered by a vine/tentacle anyway so overall I'm chuffed as it could have been so much worse!

So next up I'll get going with the structural bits for the alien plant before making a start on sculpting it, all repairs of cracks will be left till after the second bake as I may as well do them all at the same time, and no point fixing just to have it crack again.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)
