Excellent progress as always - any chance of an overall pic with something alongside for scale reference (bottle of beer, Eiffel Tower, aircraft carrier?)?

Thanks dude! Yeah sure thing, hope a tin of beans does the job! :D

Right I have been working on him, and as you can also see in the above photo I've started blocking out the open damaged alien bud, did this by putting a bit of foil around it and then wrapping it with armature wire

And then I started adding clay, this one only has two supports because the third petal will be damaged where the space explorer has already lasered off one of them

So the basic shape is their, next up I'll start refining and nailing down detail, whilst I had the wire out I also made a start on the larger open bud that will be underneath him. Started by making a paper shape just to check size and rough position and then made my wire armature for it.

But for now I'll mostly be focusing on the ones on the base, as this one will be baked separately anyway I want the main piece to be finished and sculpted asap. And once again I'm running low on clay so that will be a 3rd block I need to order soon :unamused:

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Thanks Mike, it definitely does! It was one of those modelling moments where as I was doing it in the back of my head a little voice was saying "this looks crap"

Another small update, just been working on the open bud again, fleshing it out with some more clay around the edge and smoothing it over.

39143485995_4a602def3a_c.jpg20180131_133806 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I rolled out another flat bit for the middle to build up an area to add some detail and smoothed it on.

28263012319_92ff985bb9_c.jpg20180201_132156 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I started on a bit of detail, added some soft ridges like you get on the roof of the mouth.

But at this point I wasn't happy that the middle of the petal protruded more than the lip, that didn't seem right so I rolled out a long sausage of clay and smoothed it on the outside only

28263001119_9cdcdfd8f4_c.jpg20180202_133004 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Smoothed the whole lot over with some surgical spirit

Happy with that, it looks like a seal for when it closes up and where there is an inner crease thats where I'll add some teeth. But I'll add those last so I'm not knocking them and repairing them continually!

I started to tidy the underside a bit too, added another root to cover where the armature was still poking through and it looked very rough.

39331617064_d9eb633be3_c.jpg20180202_134409 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So next I'll add a bit more root work to the underside ( I had added another but forgot to take a pic!) and I'll copy what I've done to the other undamaged petal.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right so I've been doing more gardening on Rigel 7!

Been working on the other petal, started by smoothing it over and working the shape into something more final

39405841364_fc7f95f911_c.jpg20180205_133328 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then I needed to build up a dip to make the surface more even, so I added more clay and blended it in

25245443547_8d2921f219_c.jpg20180205_133730 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then I used my ball stylus' to add the ridges which were tidied up by brushing over some surgical spirit

40084857072_5682948483_c.jpg20180205_134337 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Afterwards I started on the lip detail so I rolled a thin sausage of clay and began blending it in the same way as the other petal.

40084842002_1c5e77a2bc_c.jpg20180206_132950 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I again smoothed it over with surgical spirit, and also put similar bits of detail on the bottom of the damaged petal.

39405783024_73d215e48d_c.jpg20180206_133315 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

After that I started mucking about with a blob of clay to make an inner mouth part, I added some thin bits of clay and smoothed them over to build up 4 lips

40117708721_37a9da8fa3_c.jpg20180206_134155 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then I put it into the centre of the flower bud using a little surgical spirit to act as slip and blending the edges to help fix it firmly in place

39405783214_794c35f4e4_c.jpg20180206_134455 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So that ones pretty much done, I'll add a few more roots around the bottom, and then I'll move on to the big closed bud that he's shot with his laser.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Another small update! Cant remember if I've mentioned it earlier but I'm using a beam sabre from a 1/60 gundam as the laser beam shooting out of his gun into the alien bud at the front.

Just needed to get this out and check exactly where its going to hit the bud so I can make sure I leave a gap in my blocking out to allow for a hole.

40169021251_ee7dc36463_c.jpg20180207_131814 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

After checking its actually more on the edge than I thought it would be.

26296070348_99f707d474_c.jpg20180207_131713 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So I cut a chunk of the armature out as this is where the impact will be and I want plenty of blast radius from the beam impact point

39270387135_1c1134c677_c.jpg20180207_132034 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then it was just a matter of putting tight balls of foil in and then wrapping it all tightly with wire.

40136161502_3043000acb_c.jpg20180207_133935 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Right so thats where hes up to, I've only got a tiny bit of sculpey left so before I can carry on with that I need to get another block of clay, so thats 2 pounds he weighs currently!
Once I've got that ordered I'll carry on with the damaged bud, and I'm starting to plan out the hands too, no baking for them so I may get some 1/6 hands to use as a ready made armature with some greenstuff.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay so I have some hands! I found an old 1/6 Jin Roh figure I had kicking about and after checking them against the statue size-wise they are pretty spot on for use as an armature to build on.

39485436165_ba52360b7c_c.jpg20180213_131251 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Had to slice them down to the bottom of the palm, which was crazy easy as its soft vinyl.

40336937892_91cba0db3f_c.jpg20180213_131435 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I drilled out a hole and fit them on just to see how they looked and was pleased they looked the right size for bare hands

39485413945_6c5ec41506_c.jpg20180214_133057 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So I started on his gauntlets by adding sculpey to the left hand, I was going to cover it completely and then use tools to mark out the fingers but it was much easier to to cover the palm and get it neat at the base of the fingers and then individually wrap them with sculpey

26510868758_cbedaefe72_c.jpg20180220_132510 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then after a little more neatening of the fingers I placed it back on the armature to check how its shaping up

Happy with how its looking so far, I'll start adding some more details next, and once its done it will be boiled to harden (so I dont melt the plastic hand armature) and added at the end after all baking is done so I can then use greenstuff to make the wrist connection.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Looking great, any thoughts on colour scheme yet?

Yeah leaning towards grey and orange, with some dark alclad metallic thrown in. I like the idea of his chest piece being bright orange with some numbers/id bands on against a dark grey armour, I've not nailed anything down yet but thats the colours I have in mind

The hand looks great and the colours sound good to me. What are you doing about his gun, are you making one yourself or using a pre-built something?

Thanks Brian! I need to get an led in the gun so it'll probably be mostly made up by me for the sake of ease, still thinking about how it'll look

Sorry for slow progress over the last couple of weeks, Ive been waiting on more sculpey to arrive which should be with me tomorrow.

With the little I have left I started on the gun hand in the same way as the other, laying clay over my 1/6 hand

40630882631_91c8af0282_c.jpg20180223_131512 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

The fingers are pressed closer together than the other hand, so I had to wrap sculpey over and then trim down the excess and use my tools to get back the finger definition.

25760300657_37a4dfa231_c.jpg20180223_131942 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

39735138915_2e1d069e83_c.jpg20180223_132824 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And both hands had ended up a little rounded on the edges at the bottom, so I added more clay to allow me to lengthen them slightly and square of the ends with trimming.

40588882422_c8d9a0b0b5_c.jpg20180225_153922 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Next up I'll trim the wrist bit down slightly on both and add some details.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Hello @Hunter Rose ... I hate to bring this up but i think it need to be said/asked. The vinyl hands are a great basis for his hands no arguments there. Your work on them is excellent. Question I have is this ? Will vinyl survive the oven drying ? I know your original plastic arm cover didn't when you did your firing in the oven. I wonder if the Vinyl will or will you get a melted mess ? Sorry to throw a proverbial 🐒🔧 into your work. I’d rather do that than see all your good work liquify.
