Hunter Rose
Thanks Brian there will be details added to them later, just getting them down and positioned for now, and i like that idea!!
Hunter Rose
Right! New year and back sculpting! I've made a start on the tentacle vines going around the feet, just been smoothing over and strategically positioning the ones on the right foot to cover the almighty crack there 20180102_133726 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180102_134106 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180103_133626 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180103_134433 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180103_134446 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180104_132340 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180104_132733 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180104_132740 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I filled the final gap on the base with some more vines, once I've worked out whats covered and whats not I'll start on some detail work on them. 20180105_133653 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Want to make a start on one of the closed buds of the alien plant, so I've used tightly compacted foil wrapped in wire for support and to bulk it out. 20180105_134105 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180105_134353 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up I'll continue with that and look and start similar support bulking out of the other flower bits. Thanks for looking, more soon

Hunter Rose
Cheers Brian I've made a start shaping out the small closed flower bud with sculpey. I started by rolling some sculpey into a thin strip and wrapping it around the wire support frame 20180111_133901 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I used my fingers and tools to really squash it in around the base making sure its tightly on the wire with no gaps. 20180111_134005 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I covered the top bit and worked the shape a bit more. 20180111_134602 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Next up I'll start adding the details, these will be opening up into three gruesome petals so I'll have to section it into thirds and add some lip details on the joins. I'm also going to try something new, I want to add some vein details to the petals and the nest way to do that is rolling thin sausages and then brushing over surgical spirit (which dissolves sculpey for smoothing and making "slip") to blend it on. Thats how people get veins in muscles when sculpting, so i'm looking forward to giving it a go. Thanks for looking, more soon
Hunter Rose
Just a quickie, been working on the bud again in my lunch break. Added a bit more sculpey to bulk out the middle a bit and smoothed it over a bit 20180112_131641 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_131646 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_131905 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_132324 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_132849 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I've marked out the petal separation, and rolled some clay to blend in as a thicker lip detail. 20180112_133450 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_133458 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_133906 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_134409 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_134549 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180112_134559 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Didn't get a chance to use any surgical spirit but thats the plan next time, when I'll add the other lip bits and start putting some veins onto the surface. Thanks guys, I'm trying my best to keep the ball rolling with this project Right so I got the rest of the lip detail on all the petal edges of the bud I'm working on, again just rolling thin bits and using a flat tool to smooth one edge to blend it onto the petal. 20180115_131154 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180115_133631 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180115_134016 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180115_134657 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180115_134707 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I got out the surgical spirit to try out some smoothing with 20180116_131938 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So I brushed it over to smooth away all tooling marks and where it was still a bit rough, in all honesty just to see how it behaves as I've never actually used it and it actually works really well. In the same way you would use water with clay this is what you can use to smooth and blend bits with polymer clay like sculpey. 20180116_133856 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180116_133914 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And as you can see I also added a bit of extra detail around the lip, which I'm not entirely sure I'm happy with but I'll see how it grows on me. Next up I'll add some more little roots around the base to blend it in so it looks less "stuck on" and I'll add some spherical growths to help with the alien look! I'll probably start detailing all the roots in that section too just to make a start. The main large flower which will be open right under him will also need an armature sorting out so I'll get going with that too. I haven't bedded any support in for that as I'll do it separately and glue it after baking and painting to make much easier and less fiddly. Thanks for looking, more soon
John_W
I know what you mean about the lip detail. Makes it look a bit like a Cornish Pastie. You were going to change it anyway, you are such a perfectionist... ;o )

Hunter Rose
Just a quick update, I've now removed the cornish pasty edges from the plant bud. I brushed some surgical spirit on to get it soft and then used a ball stylus to effectively "rub it out" 20180117_132016 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I made a quick start on some smaller roots coming from the bud to tie it in more to the base 20180117_133901 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180117_134254 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180117_134556 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I added some balls of sculpey as little growths just for a bit of extra detail 20180117_134755 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180117_134759 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180117_134847 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Pretty happy with that, next up I'll add a bit of more detail to the bud and the surrounding roots. Hunter Rose
Right update! So to fight the Audrey-lien look of the carnivorous flower bud I thought I'd give it some leaf-like veins. Started by rolling some thin tapered sausages of clay and laying them in position. 20180119_133000 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then I used one of my tools to press in one side and then the other into the bud to start to carefully blend it in 20180123_130959 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_131408 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_132002 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_132311 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then after that I brushed over some surgical spirit to smooth over the tool marks and further blend them in 20180123_132348 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_132524 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_132532 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_134217 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180123_134617 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Dont think I've mentioned it but I where I used the surgical spirit to "erase" the awful crimped edge I originally put on has created a much more subtle dimpled edge which I really like, and yeah I feel good about the veins, now to copy it on the other two leaves. Hunter Rose
Right so I've added some more veins to the other sides, which I again blended in in the same way by smoothing the edges then brushing over with surgical spirit. 20180124_132023 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180124_134005 by Nick Frost, on Flickr And I whilst I was doing that I grabbed my ball stylus' and added some detail to my little growths on a whim, and was pretty pleased with the result form simply pressing them in to give a dimpled effect (gives it an almost coral look to my eye) 20180125_130952 by Nick Frost, on Flickr Then carried on blending and added the same detail to the other growths. 20180125_131517 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180125_132127 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180125_132604 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180125_133156 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180125_134303 by Nick Frost, on Flickr 20180125_134317 by Nick Frost, on Flickr So thats one bud done, next up I'll detail some of the vines around the bud and make a start on planning out the position and structure of the main open flower underneath him.
