Bugger about the computer, I saw the picture on Flickr but couldn't work out what it'd been :(

But glad the bake went relatively well, it's such a huge piece I think you were always going to get some cracking? I think the highlight of the thread is definitely the tinfoil hat now!

I think i will just bite the bullet and buy the truck accessory set it cam from, especially as the hole is made to measure, just annoying to spend the money on it but the italieri truck accessories set is a kit bash gold mine so it'll all get used eventually.

And yeah its funny i thought I'd get cracking because its an inch thick in places, but it didn't crack where i thought it would, so definitely pleased with how it went.

Can you put spider down now? We need to see more of this please.

Yeah I know, I truly SUCK at multiple projects!! Im trying to get spidey done asap so I can focus all my time on him. As soon as spidey is complete its time to start on the alien plant which I'm hoping will be no more than another week

this build is bloody fantastic

great to see this chap back under construction again - hard to believe he started life as a piece of wire

Thanks dude! Yeah I keep looking back at the early photos in disbelief!

And just for the hell of it a teeny miniscule update.

First off, just to update you on one big thing that happened, I now have a new replacement part of the bit I cooked thanks to being sent one by the totally amazing user Sentry1. I've thanked them lots in messages and I'll thank them again now in here. It really reaffirmed my belief of what a wonderful community of modellers we have here and got me out of a tight spot!

Only other little thing I did today was readjust the position of the wire supports on the leg ready to trim the threaded rod down with a hacksaw blade now that I need a lower front for my alien plant.

I'm so close to finishing my spidey build and then I am back on this 100%, I really cant wait to start more sculpting!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right so I'm now back on this!

Got the bolts trimmed down, now I've changed it to an alien plant they are way too big

And I started laying down dome clay for the bottom, which I put over some copper mesh just to add to the stability of it when once its baked and just make it more solid when I come to glue it onto the final base

I've got more sculpey on order as I'm running low again, but next Up I'm going to add more wire and bits to strengthen the supports before covering it all in sculpey. the base wont be totally solid with sculpey as it'll be too thick, so like the blocking I did with the body I'll make some tight balls of foil inside.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Okay, time for another update!

I finished off laying out the base area in rolled out sculpey

38656320911_87bf0690c9_c.jpg20171122_133202 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I beefed up the foot supports, which will eventually be vines/tentacles, with some brass rod which I wrapped some soft wire around to hold in place. And i've started smooshing some sculpey into it nice and firm to get into all crevices.

38600265706_2863ba12ec_c.jpg20171124_134757 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And then I started getting some wire supports in for my alien flower heads/buds. I'm going to do them so the petals open up to reveal a mouth in the bottom and more tendrils for grabbing inside, but some will be closed, with a large open one under him.

37988463434_48c804d4a6_c.jpg20171128_133523 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

I need this to be a bit solid while I work on it, but I dont want to drill any more holes in my base, so I decided to cure this section with a heat gun to hold it all in place. I ust kept it moving and blew hot air on it for 10-15 minutes based on online tips I'd looked up.

24833381058_c46367ca9b_c.jpg20171128_133840 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

It seemed okay when I did this, but I'll check it today and see if its nice and cured now its cool.

Next up I'll start building up the base with some tightly packed foil which I'll cover over with more rolled out sculpey.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

And so it begins to grow........B) Im looking forward to see were this goes now.

Thanks Brian, I just hope it grows into something good! :fingerscrossed:

Okay so coming back to it after it had cooled the next day this is what it looked like

26955345539_d54e84edae_c.jpg20171129_130621 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So its cured the whole thing which is fine but its warped a bit, which I'm guessing is because the main base wasn't the main focus of heat which has caused an imbalance in the curing. Which is no proplem, and at least the cracking means its dry!   And the wire supports are now nice and solid which was the main goal

So all I did next was pack some sculpey into the raised bits around the edge to support it and even the bottom out again, making sure i'm pressing down pretty hard on the cured top bit to ensure proper contact with no gaps which will cause problems later.

26955202049_24f558c204_c.jpg20171129_133506 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So once now thats done I can start to build up the middle with foil

37843513475_0a0682d4e4_c.jpg20171129_134027 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then I rolled out some sculpey to lay over this (I always roll it between a large sheet of baking paper just to keep the rolling pin clean and no residue on the table)

26955186309_99b6153869_c.jpg20171129_134754 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

37843504415_28dc4b1a1f_c.jpg20171129_134820 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

However after I did this I realised that the way I did my foil was a bit dumb! I'd left it smooth in layers, so its was a bit slippy and because it wasn't scrunched up tightly it was also a little springy when pressing on the clay, so plan B kicks in.

I scrunched the foil up tightly into hard pieces and used pva glue to ensure they will hold in place and be a solid base to work on.

26970884399_509684d316_c.jpg20171130_132826 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Okay so thats where Im up to, once the glues dry I'll lay my sculpey over again and start laying down a base covering of vines, so lots of sausage rolling coming my way!!

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Right so I got the sculpey over my now nice and solid foil, made sure I pressed it down firmly to make sure is solid to work on.

27080310839_7dcce29b8e_c.jpg20171201_133953 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And I'm just making a start on the root/vine/tentacle base covering

So thats where I'm at for now, going to continue getting the base covered then I'll start on the carnivorous alien plant heads

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

this build is amazing - every update just gets more and more intriguing - I really like your educational walk through script method - really easy to understand what you have done for each phot displayed - and now I know PVA glue and metal foil work together which will come in handy when I start making my rock and cliff relief for my sand crawler diorama next year

looks like you are much in control of this build - I'm loving every step of it.

keep it coming

Thanks Gimme really appreciate the compliments, glad your enjoying my build. And I'm really enjoying watching your sand crawler come together, having it as part of a large diorama sounds amazing!

Just a small update, still working on the tentacle vines, want to get this done but trying not to ruch it as I want to keep them as natural and non uniform in their positioning as I can.

Will continue with this then start on the alien flowers.

Just a word about where I'm going with this (as I changed how I want this to look but dont thing I mentioned it??)

There is going to be a large closed up flower head that he's going to be shooting a laser through, and probably a tentacle, in one shot. The little one in front of his left leg will be open, the one at the back I made a support for will also be closed, but underneath him I'm going to do a large open one, this will be sculpted separately for ease of sculpting and painting then glued on after baking.

In terms of vine tentacles grabbing him the supports on his feet will become two wrapped around his feet and I'm also going to do a third large one reaching for his thigh, this will mostly be for support as he's quite heavy now, the body is already nearly 2 pounds and he'll have batteries in his backpack too so I think its necessary.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Cheers Gimme! As always with my plans (or lack of!!) its subject to change!

Thanks Brian, I'll add some texture and detail them when I've finished laying them down too

Base is looking intriguing!

Cheers dude, it'll all come together more once I start on the alien flowers

I'm on my christmas hols from tomorrow so not sure how much more I'll get done this year, so for now heres just a couple of pics to show more of the vines done.

So not many if any vines left to put down, I'll start on the vines wrapping around his feet and the large one reaching for his thigh next then I can make a start on the flowers and begin to add some texture to the vines.

Man I just glanced at the start date at this and I cant believe that in another month I'll have been working on this guy for two years!! hopefully it wont take another 2 to get it finished!

Thanks for looking, more soo... Probably after christmas! :)
