Sooo I've been reshaping the damn chest section of armor, and finally got it to a place im happy with by cutting adding and smoothing.

Also i noticed that because of his slightly tilted pose, the armor was a bit longer on one side on the abdomen section.

This makes no sense as it should be hard armor with no stretch so i decided to add a flexible waist cover like on the joints to even it out, so i marked it out and gouged out some clay.

So next I'll add the padding detail in there, before FINALLY moving on to leg armor.

Im thinking i may do a video update at some point, its difficult sometimes with the sculpting to remember to take pics of the stages especially when im in the zone! Hmmm we'll see

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

EDIT: oh nads, just remembered his left hand side needs a bit taking out too, it bulges a bit at the top under the arm

More sculpting done, its nice i actually feel like I've got a bit of momentum with this project!

First things first, got the mid riff padding in, same as the joint covers (and his hair) rolled thin sausages and after pressing into place used a sharp tool to adf more fold/crease detail.

And i also removed the bump i mentioned at the end of the last post.

And my word i actually did some leg armor! Same as the other limbs I rolled thin clay and cut pieces to make the shape which were then blended together.

So he's really starting to come together now i think.

So next up I'll have to start thinking about boots and sorting the feet out, and a bit more smoothing and shaping of the thighs.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

It's funny, the progress in the close-ups looks quite gradual but when you pull back it's all making big differences to the overall look. More plz!

Yeah i took that last pic because thats how i felt, I've been focused on the small stuff so when i took a step back suddenly i could see it all making a difference . Cheers Will, more coming soon!

Spent a little more time on this guy, ive been thickening up the thighs with a second layer of armor.

It was tapering at the knees which i had to rectify and also i added some padding detail in the neck hole recess.

Next I've encountered another problem, one of his lower leg sections is longer than the other so more surgery is on the cards!

Then i can sort out lower leg armor and boots.

Not sure when the next update will be, im on my christmas holiday as of this weekend so may not get much done, but I'll update as soon as i do.

Thanks for looking, merry Christmas! :)

He's looking spiffing now hunter. Definitely heading in the right direction.

If you haven't seen it, check out the series on discovery, I think, called mars. They have some nice space suit designs.

Merry Christmas.

Well its been 2017 for over a week now so time to pull my finger out and post an update!

I've now finished the thigh top joint padding.

I still need to shorten his right leg, once i took the sculpey off and measured it i dont actually need to change much which is good.

But for now I've made a start on the alien that will be grabbing his feets armature; I drilled some holes for more of the threaded rod i used.

I used two bits because this will be the support for the whole thing so I'll strengthening the wires that are the aliens tentacles/arms (haven't decided that yet!) with more wire and brass rod and some solder.

Basically it'll be strengthening overkill because im a bit paranoid about having 1 support point!

Next up I'll continue building up the aliens armature.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

So your just doing one alien then and any ideas what type it will be yet?

looking forward to seeing more........

Not sure entirely yet, only thing locked down is that it will have two larger tentacles with claw mouths at the end coming for him, one of which is what hes shooting. I think the bits grabbing his feet will be proper arm like limbs, but I'm still thinking about the head; I'm undecided about doing something reptilian looking or just a large mouth with teeth around it.

Just to throw a spanner in the works, do you think you can get away with having only one foot being grabbed and linked by wire? I think you'll get a much better in-flight feel with the one contact.

Or is the weight of the whole thing going to be on just the alien, in which case you probably don't have the option?

Cheers,

Will

Yeah Will all the weight is on the alien, its torso is the only bit in contact with the base. With a bit of forward planning (which is not something I do often!!) I probably could have done that if I had really strengthened the one leg with the threaded rod or something, that would have looked really cool, but as I say its been my usual "figure it out as I go along" method

Okay done some more work on this, more foot surgery.

At this point in the first pic I'd moved the foot of the right leg up slightly and thought it was okay so moved onto lower leg armor.

35751728211_ce531101fa_c.jpg20170112_134541 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So rolled more sculpey out and measured the width to make sure i get two even sized bits to wrap around each leg.

35842278976_057b935763_c.jpg20170113_133853 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

35883041825_03b5c765ae_c.jpg20170113_133901 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And as you can see, thats when it became clear that the minor adjustment wasnt enough as the lower right leg still looked longer.

35713938982_dac210e908_c.jpg20170113_134449 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So time to get serious, stripped off the foot

35073813923_3ac9308e2c_c.jpg20170117_133402 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

And bent the armature raising the ankle point

35883012825_bdde593bf7_c.jpg20170117_133607 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

Then recover with sculpey just to check, the foot is now longer but the position is good.

35883019145_c9e4d0db7e_c.jpg20170117_134824 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So i removed the front of the foot and snipped down the armature, then put more sculpey on to build it up to a more final shape.

35073802913_374599cbcc_c.jpg20170118_134037 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

35882998035_211db42d1a_c.jpg20170118_134148 by Nick Frost, on Flickr

So yeah pleased with how that went, its one of those small symmetry adjustments that can quickly become a pain!

Next up I'll add more to the lower armor, i think im going to have the feet hinge on the leg armor at the ankle.

I've also had some helmet shape thoughts, i was flicking around tv the other night and Prometheus was on. I like the shape of their clear helmets on the suits they use so will try to make something similar.

Thanks for looking, more soon :)

Reading your description of the alien I wonder if something Sarlacc-ey would be good? You could have a lot of fun painting a big open mouth (all that wet meat) and it would stop the space between ground and spaceman being too full?

I like the rebalanced feet, they definitely look livelier now.

Cheers,

Will

Yeah thats a really good shout, in fact yeah reading my description again thats exactly what it sounds like! Though yeah as a thing rather than a pit. Had a thought more about this after reading your post and now I'm thinking about making it kind of like the giant slug things from Peter Jacksons King Kong.

That way I can have a big mouth (lots of wet meat to paint!) and the extended neck tube can be coming up and twisting about making it a bit more dramatic, what do you think?
