Best Colour Match for Red Arrows Hawk

I am about to start building the 1:48 Red Arrows Hawk and I am running into some issues getting a decent paint match. Airfix state Humbrol 238, but I don';t want to use humbrol as they have given me nothing but trouble trying to airbrush, so Ideally would like to use either Vallejo Model Air or maybe Tamiya.

Looking at the conversion charts I can't see a direct match for humbrol 238. Looking at various different sources and checking http://www.paint4models.com/paint converter either, Tamiya X7 or Vallejo Model air 84 (Fire Red) or Vallejo Model Colour 957(flat red) or 908 (carmine red)

has anyone used any of the above and in modelling circles which of those is considered to be the best match to the humbrol 238 ? Looking at colour charts the model air fire red seems to be a bit too dark ? I know the actual colour is BS537 Signal Red, but I can't find a really solid definitive answer on what the best match is apart from the humbrol 238 which I want to avoid using as my airbrush simply doesn't like them and I have tried every flow improver, thinner and retarder in my arsenal to get them to work and have now called no joy :(

Humbrol 238, Xtracrylix is too orange, think humbrol actually got access to the Reds paintshop when they created 238 a few years ago edit: see you don't want hunbrol, but it's the best match, plenty of folks do successfully use humbrol so go with it and the advice

Yes, it's what I thought to be honest, everywhere I read there basically wasn;t a decent match appart from 238, i'll try giving the humbrol a go. Any advice on how to get it to airbrush more easily ? I am finishing up a lancaster and I tried airbrushing humbrol 29 acrylic and it just wouldn't play. Even thinned to 50:50 with humbrols own thinner and a few drops of W&N flow improver it kept clogging the nozzle :( I have just got hold of a bottle of some retarder so I'll try doing a 25:25:50 retarder:thinner: paint combo to see if it's any better

At the risk of diverting the topic slightly, are you talking Humbrol acrylics? If so, I suggest you look at where the pot is made as Humbrol acrylics seem to come in two variants:

12ml pots with a flip top and no country of origin work very well indeed - I use Tamiya X-20A thinner with them.

14ml pots which are captioned "Made in China" are the other sort, and like you I had endless trouble. Not only would they not work, even with their own thinners (sent to me gratis by Humbrol when I complained), but I needed to do a full "armourer's strip" on the airbrush and use almost industrial quantities of airbrush cleaner to get the brush working again.
