Academy 1/72 double

So... after a small break from modelling over the New Year period, I reckon this GB is

just the right time to get back into the groove.

I had bought these two kits last year with the sole intention of building them for this GB

and here they are. I notice there's a few here already.

I shall be using a couple of schemes from this decal sheet

This for the Razorback

and for the Bubbletop.....

I will be doing the French version, as this kit doesn't have the fillet needed for the Dominican option.

Other than the fuselages and wheels, the two kits share the same parts.

I actually got a start on these today, and got a first covering of paint on a few pieces.

In the best Blue Peter tradition......Here's one I done earlier

Hi Sean, welcome aboard.

A couple of nice colour scheme you've chosen, and I like the one done earlier. Was hoping to build one of those as well but the model I have is the earlier version without the additional dorsal fin fillet!

Great start you've made.

Well good luck with the build, hope it's an enjoyable one, and look forward to seeing them in the gallery.

Cheers guys, it's good to be making models instead of thinking about making them.

The Brazilian P-47 is the old Heller kit with ABT decals, and the rocket tubes and bombs

from the Academy box.

Well...last night I was looking at what I had done so far, and thought the interior green bits looked a bit "dry",

so I thought I'd try some sort of wash to liven the cockpit up. I figured as I have so many of those little pots of

Humbrol paints knocking about, I'd make a wash from one of the green pots. So I chose one of the 30 green pots,

and when I opened it I realised all the pigment(?) was at the bottom and just used the liquid at the top, seeing as

it was diluted already. After applying it, I used a 1/4" brush to sort of dry brush most of it off.

So I left it overnight to see if I liked it today, and I'm happy with how it's taken the sidewall detail out,

and so I figured I'd try and make some seatbelts as well....here's the result:

I can live with that I think. :)

This is the Razorback, (above) I'll need to add belts to the Bubbletop seat tomorrow when the paint dries on the Tamiya tape.

Bubbletop as it sits today:

The wings were joined up:

Funnily enough, the other wings look just the same...

Then the fuselages:

Wheels painted, another coat of silver needed:

This is the first time using Gunze acrylic paint, in this case Tyre Black. After a good shake, I was well pleased

with how it went on.

Finally the props got a second coat of Hu33:

Next will be to get all the main parts together before painting starts.

Cheers guys... :)

A little bit of progress today. I've fitted the other set of belts:

24463773305_0dcfe3e590_c.jpg

and got it fitted to the cockpit:

24463784145_b8140fde2c_c.jpg

I think that they're a bit too wide, but I'll put it down to experience....

and then got the wings and tailplanes on:

There's a wee smidgeon of filler along the wing roots, but it's more a case of me applying it out of habit,

the fit is pretty good so far.

I've also Kleared the canopy's, and just need to find out what would have hung underneath the wings

and fuselage before I start paint.

Regards,

Sean

Nice Brazilian Sean.... :o Rob....I'm saying nothing.....

Cheers fellas,

On with the paint then....

Last week while in Belfast, I was in the Modeller's Nook and realised they had Gunze paints.

As I had bought some online already for some WWII Spits and Hurri's, but haven't used them yet,

I'd took the opportunity to buy some Olive Drab for the Thunderbolts, and so far I've used it on the

French one.

24156407089_a9a928706d_c.jpg

Well... I like it...but.... It dries almost as soon as it hits the plastic, and being used to enamels this 30 odd years,

I find I'm pulling the paint, and in some cases taking paint off, even after letting it cure for 24 hrs or more.

23897332323_e27e2b609d_c.jpg

Having said that, while painting the canopy, I put some in a small dish which I use for small amounts of paint,

(you can see one in the sprue pics in post 1)

it stayed "wet" for ages, certainly long enough for me to paint the canopy twice.

Overall, it does look good when in the right light.

Hello Sean

Good to see another french Jug ..

Be careful with the decals , Carpena decals are difficult to use ..

Patrice

Hi Patrice,

I've used them a couple of times before, and if I remember rightly, careful handling was the way to go.

So as well as that, I went through my references and the internet on the wife's Kindle last night, checking

for info on these two builds. There's some good stuff on frenchwings

http://www.frenchwings.net/combat/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=103

and pic of Little Demon with Maj. Walter Beckham. There's quite a bit about him on t'net.

http://www.littlefriends.co.uk/gallery/353g/yj-x2.jpg

So that's where I'm at, at the moment.

Anyone with suggestions regarding the Gunze paint, I'd like to hear them. Perhaps a primer coat is needed?

Regards,

Sean

Acrylics can be a little difficult at times to brush paint, I think the trick maybe to do lite coats as with it quite thin? I'm sure there are some "hairy men" out there who have all the right tips for acrylics.

Cheers guys...

Well yesterday looking at the Jug, I could see where the paint hadn't settled evenly, so decided to

get the Micromesh out, and give it a wet sand to try and smooth things out a bit.

Worked very well, I didn't take much paint off and the resulting finish was nice and smooth.

The first coat still shows where the paint had pulled while drying, but its not too bad overall.

After a quick wipe to clean any dust away, I got one of my small dishes and mixed the OD

with water, about 60/40 (ish??),

23932476593_d057496e0c_c.jpg

and it covered a treat.

24533119176_5514d2565a_c.jpg

Well pleased with that. I'll let it cure for a couple of days, before I attend to a couple of areas

to be touched up. Plus I have to order the paint for the undersides.

Regards,

Sean
