Matchbox/Revell 1:72 Diamond T tank transporter

Following a bit of a challenge from an old friend who had built an Airfix Scammel tank transporter, I decided to look around and find something with which to 'reply'. I was fortunate to discover the M19 Matchbox kit (albeit the Revell version) and find one to purchase. Apart from building an Airfix Sherman and Bedford QLT for someone else this was my first venture into vehicle modelling since I was a teenager.

I offer my interpretation of the M19 tractor and trailer complete with Crusader.

It is also the first time I have tried my hand at figure painting!

Thanks Steve,

Pretty much the first model vehicles I've built for me since the 60's. My first attempt at a basic diorama and my first attempt at figures.

Trouble is, having remembered that 1:76 is the deal for the M19 it isn't possible to edit the title, is it? To be honest, as far as the Crusader goes, I cannot remember, I think it is a resin kit. That said I am fairly certain it is notionally 1:72 but it looks OK. I am going to tackle the Scammel in the near future, I think I might use the Airfix Matilda for the load.

The old Airfix Crusader kit is 1/76 scale , however, it is a couple of mm too long in the rear hull . I can remember an article in airfix mag on how to shorten it , when it was originally released. Great build of the Diamond T combination.

Thank you Andrew,

As I mentioned, the Crusader is not Airfix. I read all the reviews about the inaccuracy and that swayed me to look elsewhere - I simply do not recall where I sourced that particular model, or what scale it purports to be!

I am toying with getting another one, but I don't know why. Perhaps to try and improve on what I have done with this one. Mind you all those wheels ....... and I have the Airfix Scammel to tackle yet, so maybe not.

Just found a photo of a Diamond T, wearing the same camo as your Crusader.....Carrying my Bishop:

Now that's synchronicity! ;)

When I started modelling the M19, I scoured t'interweb for photos and downloaded a great many for reference, despit that your photo appears with lots of detail, a photo I've not come across before. Now, as to the camouflage, that is interesting as it does appear to have something deliniating the 2 different tones on the truck bed certainly. Judging from the background might that be a photo taken in Italy I wonder?

We're drifting off topic here but I recall that correction article as well (by Terry Gander if i recall correctly) and made the change to several kits, But I think it subsequently transpired that it was all more complicated than that, along the lines that after the correction you ended up with a Crusader which was correct in length but wrong in its proportions. Happy to be shot down if the subsequent 40 years of AFV research have now revealed a new truth.

Now back to your scheduled viewing.

Very nice indeed and great figure painting. Is it me or does the chap in the beret standing by the cabin need to be excused? Love the the two who are getting a brew on. Good old British Army.

Lovely build TL.

And yes, the photo posted by Sarge was indeed taken during the Italian campaign.

When clearing my partners dads flat, we found some photos of M19's with M3 Grant tanks. Most from N Africa but one possibly from Italy. Unfortunately the images are quite small and so detail is not readily discernible.
