Black and White Trio - Airfix 1/72

CedB

Recommended Posts

During the BoB GB I noticed / learned a lot, including a few things relevant to this thread:

  • The Airfix new tool Hurricane is too early, but a nice kit. It has a nice black and white scheme OOB for L1584 from 1938
  • The Airfix new tool Blenheim MkI is a nice kit but doesn't have the gun pack that I needed for my build of L1105. This post told me that the Mk IVF comes with two gun packs so I bought the kit and used the shallow pack. I now have 'the rest' of the kit which has a nice black and white scheme for N8239 and
  • The Xtradecal BoB sheet X72117 has a Spitfire MkI from 74 Sqn that has a nice black and white scheme for K9867.

Can you see where I'm going here? A trio of black and whites. Here are the kits:

My plan is to build them together to save airbrush cleans. Lazy, but you already know that :)

Hi Ced!

I'll be following this build with great interest! I'll be doing the Hurri in the White-Silver-Black underside livery for the Hurricane STGB. I've also done the Spit in regular BoB camouflage (my first kit after returning to modelling in 2014!) and have the Blenheim Mk I in the stash. So, it should be an interesting WIP to follow :)

You productivity doesn't cease to amaze me! And the quality of your builds has been steadily increasing, so keep up the good work!

Cheers

Jaime

Hello Ced, good idea to save time cleaning the airbrush. I've got even lazier. I making the Lego Technic Cargo Plane. No tools, and no painting. It just clips together and I get to play with it when I've made it. Good luck with your production line. Joe :)

Legos are great! I'm a great fan since I was a little kid. Now I give Legos to my nephews so that I can sneak in and help them :)

Thanks all and welcome everyone!

Darby I've not counted builds but I suppose I should add them up, sometime :)

Not much done as yet but I'm starting with the Spitfire, of course. A chance to try out my new Citadel 'Mouldline remover' which the chap in the shop told me is like trimming with a scalpel without the risk of snagging the part - seems to work quite well.

I'm not planning to post all the steps as other, more accomplished modellers have already built these so I'll just post interesting bits and major stages. I am going to try some new washes, weathering and stuff so I hope I can keep you interested!

Thanks for joining in :)

I'm on board for this one Ced. The Blenheim is a favourite and I am really interested to see how the new tool works out. I have the Hurricane in the stash so this will help greatly.

Your output is inspiring Ced; I must admit one day I would love to see that big Fly beastie on a WIP😉, guess who else has one....

I've got the Blenheim Mk 1 on the go at the moment so shall be watching your progress, great thread.

Welcome Blitz23... I built an F1 for the BoB (WiP here) so I hope to avoid any problems I had there; not that many IIRC, it's a nice kit.

Black and white undersides? Only my favourite colour scheme!

Regards,

Adrian

Thanks Adrian - I like the look of it too and I'm hoping that Stynylrez primers will give me a good enough finish. Fingers crossed.

Thanks Tony. I'm hoping to avoid any Blenheim problems from my F1 experience. I've spent some time today looking at Hurricane builds, including Garth's / dr_gn here. Garth is an amazing modeller (I still drool over his Tornado, especially the canopy) and I'm not going to try to match his results but I hope to get close(ish).

Looking forward to this, especially how the Blenheim glazing turns out and also the Hurricane wings.

John.

Hi John. Ah, yes, the glazing... I hope to avoid discussions on bumps or no bumps by sticking to my OOB mantra!

Hurricane wings? You mean the metal bits? Still pondering but I am quite lazy :)

The Spitfire parts are waiting in the spray booth:

As stated above I've spent some time today reviewing builds on BM before blundering on with my kit bashing. This has made me nervous about the Hurricane fit, especially the wings, and I've hit the first problem at step 2...

Despite bending the part and getting the 'Airfix New Tool Click' at one point the rib is still wobbly:

I think I need to recharge my fiddly part patience and try the other parts too to see if they help, but I fear there's going to be lots of parts springing all over the place. If I don't get this right I KNOW there will be fit issues trying to get the wings together. Hmmm :hmmm:

Ced, you cunning seducer.

Who, me?

Nice to see things getting ready for painting, Ced :) are you going to prime the parts?

Cheers

Jaime

Thanks Jaime. I don't normally prime the internals; partly laziness but I also don't aim for a wet coat so that I end up with an uneven finish that, hopefully, looks a bit 'weathered'.

I fitted the internals to the wheel bays, glueing the back parts first, letting them dry and then fitting the longer front bit. This did help cure the bendiness a bit but also allowed me to fit the long part, assemble the wings and make sure that the 'top lug' (red arrow below) fitted into the top wing correctly. Even then I had the same problem as others with the wingtips not matching up:

I then ran some Tamiya Extra Thin around the edges (being careful not to get any on the 'outside'), tried to match the wing tips up and clamped them tight.

Once dried I sanded the joins with Micromesh (I DO love this stuff) including the wingtips:

I'm quite happy with that, except there's still a mis-alignment on the training edges, which may be Airfix's hint that they need to be thinned. I'll have a ponder.

... and the Hurricane parts ready for spraying. I must remember to do the aluminium first so that I can go back and do the IG... after masking a bit.

Sharp eyed viewers will note that I've run some Vallejo plastic putty around the wing joins for later sanding.

I'm going to try Vallejo Model Air aluminium on this but I also want to try spraying AK True Metal on the outsides so I can vary the buffing.

Simon I was hoping no one was going to mention that... But now that it's come up I suppose I should get the filler out. Groan. :)

Edit: like this? There are some photos in Garth's thread too but it's really hard to see the metal bits. It's not really visible on the diagram he included either IMHO.
