Memories from my model railway days

I thought why not write and publish a pair of pics from my days as an active model railway enthusiast? The pics are of quite bad quality but so were/are my modelling efforts too!

First, let´s take a look at fictituous hamlet of Zwischenhausen. It was located between --- and --- in Sachsenhausen canton in Northern Switzerland - thence the name! By theme it was to be a freight bypass/commuter line without locomotive hauled long distance trains. So much for fantasy. The track was never nailed in place as I tried different layouts, and not even this was the final one (-to be). The unpainted rear section was meant to be a staging yard/passing sidings hidden behind a 20cm high backdrop. In my dreams, yes... Technically it was a 235x115 cm layout featuring DC trackage and a basic DCC system. My choice on track was very bad as the switches were/are simply awful and caused constant derailments - not good for modelling spirit :-(

See the tunnel portal in the distance - the scenicing had begun!

And here´s a pic of my Edelweiss - DB Schenker 185 142-7 "Schweiz"- lok. I had custom decals made in a graphic shop.

But that layout table is now history. I do have most of my rolling stock and all track pieces left. I had a four wagon RoLa train and a full scale (303mm) sleeper, but they were too long for my tight curves and I decided to sell them.

I remember the immense pleasure there is to be had - just running trains - tend to spend too much time 'planning' and building stock - rather than running stuff ...

Totally agree,Pete - I love scale model shows but also watching model trains.I find it immensely relaxing and another great hobby of s lifetime.. All the best,Paul.

That custom livery is very nice

I was a railway modeller for several years, but sSad to say plastic modelling has been so absorbing that I haven't really been back to any of my layouts since I got into it. And they all needed to be finished, too!

I also like running trains, it was a big discovery that a roundy-roundy layout can be just as much fun as an up-and-down shunting plank.

Hello,Will - I'm grateful to love these two fine hobbies/pastimes/passions and if you've had a temporary fill of 'Scale Fettling' it would be a therapeutic tonic to just sit by a layout and watch the trains go by.

A dream scenario for me would be a model airfield with a railway running around it! Oh,well - wishful thinking."Keep your Steam and Airspeed up!!" All the best,Paul.
