Story of a miserable year: 2015

Very glad to see the back of this year - plagued with uncertainty, ill health and ultimately the loss of a wonderful career and lifestyle which I had enjoyed for the past 15 years. But on the plus side, lots of time for modelling! Photos by me, except where credited.

1/72 U-Boat - resin waterline kit from CMK, finished as the famous U-96.

The next was the ancient Revell/AHM kit of the USS Decatur, a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer in box scale (approx. 1/325)

I also did her modern-day namesake, USS Decatur (DDG-73) an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in 1/350 from the excellent Trumpeter kit.

Next up - one of the best paint jobs I've ever managed. Revell's F-4F in 1/32, with so many modifications it's almost a different kit!

The strain was clearly too much, as the next three things I built were OOB. An RAAF Hawk Mk.127 from the 1/32 Kinetic kit. Nice kit, but definitely the best kit decals I have ever used.

Next OOB project was this 1/48 Grumman F7F Tigercat, from the AMT/Ertl kit. A really excellent kit, highly recommended. This was also my first attempt at painting all the markings as the decals had died.

More OOB followed - would you believe this was my first RAF Spitfire? 1/48 Tamiya Vb kit.

All these were done by July. I spent most of my year on just one model, but it's the pinnacle of all my modelling achievements to date. Still not quite finished (waiting on some some new cast Brimstones) but I'm really happy with this one! 1/32 Tornado from 31 Sqn, the Revell IDS kit brought bang up to date with the addition of the Flightpath sets and loads of extra details added from scratch.

Hoping to do more 1/48 stuff next year, and pick up a few more ships too. In the meantime, a very Happy New Year to you all

Hello Alan,

I really feel your pain having been in a similar situation around 10 years ago but I hope that you can carve a niche elsewhere, regain your health as best you can and have a much better 2016,.......with luck you`ll look back on this as a turning point which led to a better path.

Your models are superb and if I had to choose my favourite it would just be the U-Boat.

Good luck for the future starting with 2016,

Cheers

Tony

So sorry to hear about your troubles in the past year Alan :( But seeing the glass always half full rather than half empty, i believe you ll have great times ahead of you and i wish you the great times soon! :)

And the finished kits looks totaly great and amazing with some catchy details (love the tornado panels being gently but still noticeably catched with various shades and colour accents)! Great job :)

Thank you Paul! things are much better, but i won't be going back to my old job, which is a shame. Still have loads of time for modelling, which i am thoroughly enjoying at the moment.

All the best, Alan

I was sorry to read in your first post about the difficult end to last year Alan. I had major issues at work myself that have prompted me to start making some fundamental life changes as well, so you have my sympathies for the rollercoaster that life puts us on sometimes. Just wanted to say your work is always a pleasure to look at.

Kind regards,

Tony

Thanks a lot Tony. At least all this time on my hands means there'll be more to look at in the end, i suppose! I didn't expect to find myself out to pasture at just 45, but if I end up being able to make an income from writing (or even modelling!) I'd be deliriously happy to be honest.
