dawkuk
Hiya. Yes - it is another Tamiya's golden oldie. After Sd.Kfz.222 and Panzer II F/G (soon to be presented in RFI section) i decided to have a go with another one. I really like those old ones. They're fun to build, really eye-catching and cheap models. If something goes wrong - well, you just buy another one. Great for learning new techniques. This time it is a Sd.Kfz. 250/3. I'm gonna do it in Afrika painting scheme, but it is not going to be famous "Greif" from which Erwin Rommel himself used to command. I decided to have a go with some rusty/burny techniques. We'll see what happens. Here's what i got so far. Boxart's pretty nice. Model has been manufactured in 1979. And the sprues... I like the tracks. They're not vinyl ones... Soldats and Rommel - I'm not gonna use these... Engine and insides. Interior is quite fully represented, as it's really open and visible. And the hull. OK, time for glue. The front suspension. Lower hull. It is detailed nicely. Rear side. Front suspension mounted. Still lots to go on this one. But first we're gonna see, what's cooking inside. That's gearbox and it's surroundings. Fitting is really great. Absolutely no problems. Although some parts need to have a quick date with sanding paper. Engine. Some seams needed to be removed. But the plastic is really soft, so I'm talking few quick moves. Fitting test with the rest of the floor... ...and the engine. Aaaand the overview with an upper hull. That is it. Seems like a fun build. I'll try not to ruin it Enjoy. Dawid
Badder
Nice. I remember very nearly buying this one when it first came out, as it happens! So I was 14! But I personally didn't like the idea of solid tracks. Is there an upgrade kit available for this one? I love all these little German half-tracks and small armoured cars though. And let's not forget the big 8-wheeled beggar! Edited March 26, 2016 by Badder
robw_uk
nice work on "GREIF" (know you arent doing it as that version)... really looking forward to more progress
dawkuk
Thanks, boys, for kind words. More progress? Here it is: I started on the upper part of the hull. Fitting of the parts is excellent. Nothing can go wrong, really. I recommend this model for less experienced modellers. Some works with the putty required, although I'll see how it looks when they sit on their places. Maybe just weathering will do. And getting back to the interior. Radio station. I got tempted to add some wirings, and maybe I will. If someone maybe has a good picture of the radio station, i'll be very grateful. Lower hull nearly finished. And road wheels. And the other ones... :-) Last details on the lower hull... Once you put everything together, you're getting nice, rich interior with plenty of shapes and details. I'm not going to use figures, so interior will be fully visible. Some last touches on suspension. That is it for now. I'll try to start painting insides with next post on the thread. Thanks for watching. Merry Christmas, lads. hope Ya'll find some great models under your christmas trees. Cheers Dawid

dawkuk
Cheers, boys. There's some more of the same... I started with fenders. I didn't like the rug covering the equipment, so i got rid of it. I'll replace it with something else. Right one. Jerry cans with some little holes that will need to be filled. Upper hull exterior details. Second part of the engine cover will be painted separately and glued at the end. Everything goes according to the plan. Assembling is really quick and painless. It's a great kit. I said it, I know The tripod. I really like the structure of this vehicle. Plenty to weather. Some priming next time. Hope you all had great Christmas. Cheers. Dawid. dawkuk
Ok, today's a quick one. Primer on. I used Tamiya's Surface Primer (L). Transmission compartment. Engine block. I'll put some more primer Bits and pieces... Bits and pieces part 2.... Upper hull... I really like interior due to its complexity... Ther it is. For interior i'll try something I never done before. Stay tuned. Dawid... PS. Oh, and all the best for 2016 boys and girls!!!

A nice progress for now, It is really an oldie, I also, for now, I mounted kits with at least 15 years (unless in my closet lol) or more old, but are Italeri (specifically a Puma, and formerly a Chaffee). Yours is a proof that with skill, patience and means can achieve great results, Greetings

dawkuk
Tonight a quickie as there's not much new to show: I've just put some rust on walls. I wanted to try with some chipping fluids. Never done it before I've also upgraded engine with some dark and rusty pigments. I'm gonna add some Fresh Oil etc... That is it. Thansk for watching. Dawid.
Badder
Looking good! Watching with interest. I noticed the Tamiya date 'stamp' on the interior of the upper hull... 1979. So yes, my guess that I was 14yrs old when this kit came out, was spot on! Gawd I am old! I've never tried these new-fangled 'chipping fluids'. An extra and unnecessary coat of gunk as far as I can tell. I honestly can't see the point of them at all. A fine brush and some suitably coloured paint spotted around is far less hassle in my book. And for big chips you can't beat a pyrograph or a heated blade/nail/pin etc. Badder.
dawkuk
Guys... does anyone know what colour should I use for interior? I've seen lotsa pictures with different ones: desert yellow, light gray, interior buff. Does anyone know which would be correct? I mean for Afrika Korps scheme. Thanks
dawkuk
Long time no see on this one. But I got a nice update for ya   For interior I used Buff colour form Hataka's WW2 AFV Interior Colours Paint Set. But first i used Mig's Chipping Fluid to weather the interior colour.  Then i used water and brushest, toothpick etc to remove the Buff.   Here's a little closeup.   Driver's area.   And the radio compartment.   The bottom paint used for radio and floor was Aluminium.   And the upper side of the hull.   Rear part.   And that's how it looks when you put it altogether.   Everything sits great together, no problems there.   It's an old kit, but it's still Tamiya's kit.  Then I did a Wash. It was Mig's Wash for Interiors.   I want to give it a really battered look. The upper hull again.  The tarp thing. The driver's compartment again.   The last stage was putting some oil etc. stains...  I did it to add some colour variation. I've also added few streaks to side panels.  Interior is shaping up nicely. Some last details - crew's rifles.  And the steering wheel.  Then, finally, I could close interior.  All's inside works are done.   Time to start with exterior parts, like fenders...   I like that Next thing was antenna. I was afraid it would cause problems, but no. Everything sits great, geeometrically it's very good once you put eveything in it's place.   So, after priming it, it was time to put the paint on. That's a Desert Yellow (Tamiya I think). That is it for now. Be back soon.  Thanks for watching.  Dawid
FrancisGL
A nice work with interiors, perhaps you could have painted the indicators on the control panel, but anyway looks good, , cheers Dawid
dawkuk
Hiya, let's move to weathering.  Step 1: filters. I used AK's Filters for DAK vehicles.      Step 2: Wash. It was also AK's Wash for DAK. I wanted to go heavy with the effect, as the vehicle will be really dusty. I don't want wash to hide under that dust.      And step 3: The chipping. I've also attached wheels at this step.    Next steps really, really soon, as I'm really close to end the project.  Thanks  Dawid

dawkuk
Thanks, Roger. I got some more: Â Step 4: Streaking. This I've done with AK's Streaking Grime for Dark Yellow, and sume Burnt Sienna and Titanium White oil paints. Â Â But first I assembled the tracks. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Step 5: Oils, stains, last touches. Â Â Â That' it for WIP. The last effects (dust, etc) I will show in next post, which will happen in RFI section. Thanks for following. Blaubar
Nice and clean build, but exaggerated chipping and rusting unless it sat in the desert for years. Though it does look awesome! /STefan

Thanks  Noticed this build too late to be of any help on the interior colour question, but for future reference, only fully enclosed vehicles had the ivory colour painted inside. Open top, such as half-tracks, were painted same as exterior. Vehicles sent to Africa early in the campaign, arrived in European scheme, that is panzer grey. Only the outsides were repainted to match surroundings, while the grey remained inside.  regards, Jack
Gremlin56
I like it. The weathering is maybe on the heavy side but it's nicely performed and does add a tough and well used appearance to Rommel's transport. Julian
