Varnishing Over Silver Paint

I have used Humbrol varnish several times over Humbrol silver paint but they don't appear to get on very well, resulting in the silver paint lifting on some occasions and going all blotchy, what would be the best gloss varnish for brushing on top of Humbrol silver paint?

Best way is to do a test swatch of your silver, and try acrylic gloss if it's enamel silver. They should coexist ok, but spraying will give a better result in my experience, as there's no pressure being applied to lift the existing paint. :)

Yes I use Humbrol enamel varnish over Humbrol enamel silver, they hate each other! how about if I try acrylic varnish over enamel silver? what sort of finish does Humbrol clear give? is that an enamel gloss finish?

Here's a review of Alclad Gloss from some geezer called Mike on an obscure modelling forum. He talks about its effects on both shine reduction and spraying over enamels , seems to know a lot more than the "Mike" who posted here

Seriously though, this stuff is pretty reliable and works over virtually everything, enamels, acrylics and lacquers so worth a punt at six pounds odd a bottle and you can dip canopies in it as well.
