Kes
I've just recently finished this one, it's taken a while!! It has been posted on another forum but I thought you might like to see it? Two 1/144 scale classic Airfix kits, hostile environment research vessels called 'Discovery' Incredible to consider they are the same scale!! . . . DAG058
I never knew there was a kit of the maritime Discovery. You've done a great job.
turnerdad
I never knew there was a kit of the maritime Discovery. You've done a great job. I didn't either, lived in Dundee for a number of years and visited several times. will have to have a look...
Kes
Thanks for the comments fellas, I'm really happy with it. I might do 'Endeavour' too some time, with the orbiter on it's wheels and the bark in full sail? It's a thought I suppose? . . . Martian
Nice one! That is the first time in fifty years modelling that I have ever seen that kit built! Martin
prowler0000
Like Martin above ( but you can deduct about 10 years...(ish)) Please do the Endeavour duo, & be glad nobody does a 1/144 Enterprise!
Darby
Jammy sod. I've been hunting for a Discovery recently as an alternative to a Cutty Sark. Haven't made one since the mid 90's albeit with a slightly warped hull which needed straightening. Something about Airfix and 'days of sail' that bring back memories. Nice work. Kes
Thanks for your kind comments, it's properly appreciated. This is my 'second' Discovery 1901, I built my first one in the late '80s, it took a couple of weeks I suppose? This one took over a year! Although I've put more work and detail into this one the main reason is my manual dexterity and visual accuity isn't what it used to be and prompted me to acquire an 'illuminated lens'. If I could offer one single piece of advice it would be use an illuminated lens! Completely transformed my model builds! Fantastic! I got my Discovery 1901 from eBay for about £20 I think? One thing I would suggest is to buy an early edition (mine was from the '70's) where the shrouds are already made up (although mine had mostly disintergrated!) instead of a loom like device for constructing your own?? Enormous sense of satisfaction having the thing on the shelf once completed! . . . Kes (who is wondering how far USS Enterprise 1701D would scale out in 1/144?)
