S5 modeller
Hi chaps. Just got the zvezda 1/144 a-90 Ekranoplan kit. Looks like a nice kit, I know it is a revell rebox, and have a question. Wikipedia states that the upper engine is a turboprop. As it has two sets of props would I be right in assuming they were contra rotational? I have a mad plan to attempt a diorama base showing the craft in full flow over the sea. Now I want to mount it on acrylic rods, to show the way it skims above the surface, due to this end I want to attempt to motorise the props. At this scale would it be worth attempting to reproduce the contra rotation? Hope someone can shed some light on this oddball subject. Flankerman
Like this Matt??? (the brass rod supports are PS'd out) Yes they are contraprops - exactly the same Kuznetsov NK-12 engine as fitted to the Tu-95 Bear and An-22 Cock I did quite a few mods to the nose intakes and cockpit - the Revell/Zvezda kit is way out in this area. My build is here Here's how big it isn't - compared to the other 2 Aleksayev designs...... (all in 1/144 scale)....with a Bear for size comparison Linky to more photos. Happy Modelling Ken PS - The real thing is now a museum in Moscow....
S5 modeller
Ken, that's exactly the type of dio I was thinking of. Do you think it's worth trying to replicate the contra rotation in this scale? Would anyone notice? I've been through your build threads already, as research, I've even contemplated chopping the front off and fitting a hinge. It certainly has a large pair of nostrils. I presume it's form following function. Those russians sure had their fare share of "out there" designers. S5 modeller
I noticed the kit transparency was more curved than faceted.
Truro Model Builder
A friend of mine has done a similar diorama, but without the moving props, and it looks quite striking. I quite like the idea of making one painted white with the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company emblem on the tail and 'Scillonian IV' painted on the nose...

Now you've gone and put a silly idea in my head. Could use the isle of man steam package company instead. I visit the isle a bit, so might make a nice tribute.
Truro Model Builder
When you think about it, it's not so silly really...
S5 modeller
Aye, they do run a seacat, which isn't too different.
Flankerman
I did a WHIF some years back - the A-90 Virgin Atlantic 'Baltic Eagle'........ The Revell kit with the turboprop replaced by a turbofan engine and decals from Liveries Unlimited IIRC. Imagine one of those skimming between Tallin and Helsinki........ Ken PS - The real thing is an Alekseyev A-90 'Orlyonok' (Sea Eagle) btw. Edited November 25, 2015 by Flankerman
