I'm going to regret this :)

But to hell with it... I'm whiffing!

I started out with a poor innocent ugly duckling. An ICM 1:48 Yak-7B.

It started out pretty innocent... "That fabric detail looks lame"

0B5D3CFA-59B8-42E6-8BE5-895C55ACF177_zps

And then things got ugly... "Hmmm, extra set of wings in the spares: I wonder?"

B530B180-FFC0-4FD1-9587-6D6239A4CD99_zps

At that point realism was out the window, so I just kinda raided the spares to see what I got.

Btw, there's quite a few pieces of Tamiya Corsair in there.

I think a few sacrifices to the filler God might be in order, I'll be needing help from Him.

And I've already started to get ahead of myself too, I'm thinking 3x20mm canon, 2x50cal pods and 12 50lb teeny tiny bombs. And a radar pod, just for fun :)

DF9A766C-5238-4A90-96AD-C1974A1012A3_zps

I'm grinning just thinking about it. I have absolutely no idea where this is going, but whatever, it's fun :)

Cheers,

K

The war of the sanding has begun!

The first battle is pale, the second more yellow tinted

9F92AA00-7CC8-4163-91D3-AA04BF16C3AC_zps

The second front has opened too, and radar has been introduced to the equation.

7D94FE89-C586-417E-895B-EA68E8CDBFFB_zps

And the last front has already wound down and is now waiting for the other to do the same

11800E51-10AD-460A-BF9C-AD034636D172_zps

Aka I've got one coat of putty sanded on the wings, and a second coat is drying. The smoking of the fuselage sides is basically done and the plane now has a radar pod (which will require filler)

Cheers,

K

Definitely good fun

More bonkers business tonight :)

First paint-an interior coat sort of meant to match the dark green put in P-47s

A98F52CB-D7B3-424A-81DB-00E43FFA113E_zps

That's coat #1

46B78C5C-6A3A-4693-ABEF-FDBC8CD4653F_zps

And that's coat #2

I also got the clear bits sorted-I chopped the big long kit canopy down to length and made the little bits for the turtleback cutouts.

90E4FE03-B168-44B9-9D05-C49B53825CA4_zps

One of the turtleback windows is a piece of really thick clear plastic ground down with the dremel the polished. The other is part of the cut off from the kit canopy.

Also made up the drop tank-not much to say

E887FF73-4793-4547-AC6F-3655E316272B_zps

And now for the really bonkers bit :P

My wings weren't weird enough, so I chopped the tips off and gave them a set of the downwards wing fences you see on some acrobatic planes

CECD21B9-9BC7-4489-9182-6C53BD0ED0EF_zps

Funny-they look sorta like P-51 wings now :hmmm:

Also took the detail off the front cowling

E5A95A91-B056-4952-AAEE-A871177ADBBB_zps

Last bit of work was to switch the exhausts

BF3B6F80-5467-4CAF-B494-EC3A13DC3C05_zps

These are the non-fishtail exhausts from the hasegawa spitfire-they fit pretty well.

Anyway-I'm now getting very silly ideas in my head-I've got a concept that the North American NA-73 project created 2 planes, the day fighter we all know so well, and a night fighter that bore a few similarities that ended up beating the P-61 in the USAF night fighter competition....

Cheers,

K

As the glue sets on another day of modelling, I have another update for anyone who's interested.

I started out either the tail mods. I traced the tail, then drew the shape I wanted it to become. Then I cut out chunks from the tail to give the additions more to hold onto, and away I went.

99B6B883-0F33-4BCB-A465-26E0D211AB6C_zps

Next up I finalized the interior paintwork. It's so dark because in a nightfighter, you don't want something that's going to reflect a lot of light.

0B5E30F4-579F-4A1E-BD14-5A7123F691F3_zps

Next, the fuselage halves went together (glue actually is setting lol) as you can see, I've also putties up the tail pieces to blend the plasticard in.

7DD47AAB-45F1-490E-A720-F0D3AA8065F1_zps

And lastly it was time for some dry-fitting and round-the-room flying :)

148BE56A-A2C8-4DAD-B379-A6ACD6321659_zps

Looks rather good if I do say so myself.

Anyway, let me know what you think,

No, not pink, sorry.

I'm thinking super weathered black like some of the pacific P-61s

Got all the tail surfaces stuck on

0961202C-527F-4CB6-8199-1474D2E8C251_zps

You'd almost think you were looking at the back end of a mustang.

Also stuck the top cowl in place, will have to paint the exhausts afterwards, but oh well

B9894EEB-1E55-493F-9B3E-96ABCE6E347C_zps

Will also have to think up of some kind of exhaust flame hider... Suggestions?

Anyway, it's getting there :)

Cheers,

K

Maybe try a simple piece of flat plastic card, like was used on the Hurricane MkII night fighters? Certainly the easiest way.

This is a great build - the result will certainly be a double-take job!

you are complete bonkers/mad, please keep it up!

some cool ideas you have going on, and it's you modelling skills are getting better and better with each build, well done.

I'm dying to see the finished beasty!

Thanks for the geeback everyone. For the exhaust hiders, it's looking like I'm going to add a scrap of card-I haven't got a spit kit with the parts I need unfortunately.

Today's progress includes fairing in the back windows, and then making them clear all over again.

7581827B-CFA0-4C7A-9733-DB4D0BA6C496_zps

You can see the end result here, as well as the fact that I now have a plane (yay)

2B298721-F245-4A16-AFC9-A0414203CB9C_zps

Last bit of progress is a futured main canopy and a first bit of red on the spinner

D10EAFD9-72E7-4154-89FF-A57FDE5028D4_zps

Anyway, work has (obviously) slowed down, and will continue to be slow for the next 2 weeks-I'm annoyed, but I haven't got time for modelling at the moment.

Cheers,

K

Turns out I have more time in the day thank I thought I did :)

This pic shows 2 things-neither of them very well :/

041408AA-DCB3-48AA-9565-591BE0444959_zps

1: the putty at the wing joint has been sanded down

2: the canopy needs shimming to fit nicely

The shims were super-glued in place, the painted over.

Next step, gunsight. It was made out of a few assorted pieces of left over PE, then glued in place and painted

3026857D-22BC-4179-A1B4-E583C20FBE5A_zps

Anyway that's it for today's second update, next one will probably be the last bits before painting, and some painting :D

Cheers,

K

Well, I've been rather lazy updating this :sorry:

But now there's a big update since it's now finished.

When I left off I was finalizing canopy fit and fishing up the seam prep work.

After that came some black

49BFA867-8375-4DFB-A94C-9FF558262082_zps

And then some more black

EDF7C556-1FA3-4DA9-8ACE-4FECAB948C96_zps

Batmo-plane!

Then some unmasking and a bit of red

A098B0D6-DB97-44F1-BCE3-38BD5F203E07_zps

Id say it looks like a nightfighter

D4336186-0581-49E4-8DB8-7C1408DE265D_zps

Shiny and decals-most of the decals are actually from 1:72 planes but they look alright so who cares

EE9BC00E-BBB1-45E1-A4EE-F89BB2B9BBAD_zps

Then we skip a few steps to the finished item

41B524FD-E749-45C8-9882-B3D2027EFAB9_zps

It's actually significantly smaller that a mustang-

1A94FBD3-B7D4-4F18-A2C6-E3C1321A1B9B_zps

Interesting comparison

Anyway, hope you like it-I had fun :D
