1/32 Lightweight Aluminium E Type - Group progress

I'm going to be building a 1/8 Lightweight E Type in Aluminium finish some time next year, but as a 'run-up' to it, I'm going to 'tweak' the little cheap 1/32 Airfix kit first.

Would there be ANY interest in me posting it as a 'how to do it' for others here to follow?

I'm not in any way trying to intimate that I know all the answers but having so far tweaked 4 different versions from the Airfix kit, I have a fair idea of the pitfalls and fixes of this little kit which is actually, one of the most accurate representations of the car out there in kit-land.

My model will be a lightweight, roof and boot air vents, racing fuel filler, wider rear arches, race interior, Dunlop steel wheels and polished ally body.

The missing headlight bowl interiors will be added, bumpers etc removed.

If you think it might be of interest, or you might even get the little kit and have a go, please say so below...

There is an expression about bears and woods.... who could say no to a master class in scratch building... I 'd be interested for sure.

Not a scale I would build but, anything you do when it comes to scratch building and adding detail to any kit is always of interest to me. Techniques translate to any scale; it's because of guys like you, Mr.C and David Cox that give me the confidence to tackle the stuff I'm working on now. Your audience is secure, go for it.

Past history; when I moved more in the classic car circles there was a chap in the Irish Jaguar Owners Club who had built a replica of the Briggs alloy racing car using a '61 car as donor. That could rightly shift on the track.

An early series one E-type is the third fastest vehicle I've driven. Had it up to a true sustained 158mph.

A bit more information here as to what will be involved:

Fitting the missing light 'buckets' into the empty openings at the front.

Making and fitting the missing interior rear wall thereby closing off the space between the seats and the rear wheels etc.
I'll make a template for this simple part and post a picture with sizes.

Sort out the awful dashboard and create a full width decal or gloss photo if you can't/haven't made decals before.

Artwork and sizes will be posted.

Assembling the body parts so the join seams are gone.

Flaring the rear wheel arches.

Adding the roof and boot lid air vents.

De-texturing the kit roof.

Extra details/race trim to the interior - nothing miniscule or fancy.

Making Dunlop steel wheels - very easy actually...

Metal foiling the car.

Finishing details.

There may well be other things I haven't thought of but they will be attended to as we go.

The build won't be a 'rush job' over the space of a few days but I envisage it will take quite a few weeks so that everyone - myself included - can do it as an 'in-between' of whatever model you are currently building.

Hopefully, all good fun with a nice 'gallery' of finished cars at the end.

As a vague guide, I've attached a few pics of what can be done with the little Airfix E Type...

I'll be watching with interest, as plan to do a lightweight in 1/8 too! Different kettle of fish doing the roof from the coupe, rather than the roadster shell -but you know that already! ;-)

Reminds me, I have a half started 1/8 project on the Briggs Cunningham Le Mans Coupe somewhere too! Shall I start a thread on it?

Oh yes please. Lightweight Es are a great favourite in car stakes. One of my treasured Classic cars mags has an article comparing the LW E-type with a Aston Martin DB4 Zagato & Ferrari 250GTO, imho, it doesn't get much better. :)

Apologies for the delay in starting, but things have been manic here this week - chased by publishers, trying to locate certain parts etc for the DBR1, and arranging a deal with a company to get a new 1/8 model car on the go... Can't say much about that yet.

Also, trying to get an affordable deal for the 1/8 lightweight E Type roadster conversion parts for others to buy at a sensible cost - currently, around £100 for a roadster back end and hard top - laughable!. I want it to be at least half that!

The little 1/32 kit-bash will start imminently.

PART 1 -

Get your kits out.

It starts Thursday, 12-11-2015...

Ideally, you will need the following:

1/32 Airfix E Type kit. (Difficult without this bit...)

Some 20-30 thou plasticard. (If all else fails - a thick butter or marge tub - preferably empty!)

A piece of 8mm dia plastic tube - a short bit of round Biro tube will suffice.

A Dremel or other power tool - Sandpaper and files will do, but a bit more time consuming.

Paints.

A printer - not obligatory, but if you want to print the (later) provided correct dashboard etc, it would help.

White Decal Paper - as above, if you want to print the (later) provided decals etc. (Details as to how to do it will be given)

A dressmaker pin. (You'll find out later...)

An nice bottle of wine - you only really need the foil cap, but the wine will be usefull too...

Some modelling filler/putty - not obligatory, but will help in some areas.

Some chrome sticky tape, or ally foil tape from a pound shop - you need all of 1"... (You could cope without it)

A sheet of chrome Bare Metal Foil - if you want a REAL metal finish...

A can of chrome spray paint if you don't want to try the above BMF (Which is actually really simple, looks better and costs about the same...)

Glue

Assorted paints.

4 x M5 washers. (If you REALLY get stuck, PM me. I'll send you them FOC.)

A black Sharpie pen. (Yes, really.)

You don't need all of the above right away, but the E Type kit would help at the start...

ALL of the above - AND what follows also applies if you fancy jumping in with the Revell 1/8 model kit.

PLEASE - post pictures of what you are doing if you join in with the 'group' build.

It will help ALL of us to see what you are doing, where (if) you get stuck, and what we are all up to.

At the end, it will be great to see a big showcase of finished cars.

Kicking off.

In my early teens along with most of the available/affordable 1/32 automobile kits, I made three Airfix Jaguars by my count. A nail polish pink one for a female cousin, a white one with blue stripes for a kid at school and one for me in gold. I recall being vaguely disappointed in the wheels by the time I reached mine. The blue on white had the wheels reversed. All weekend builds.

Although I hadn't built one of these kits in about fifty years but one was adjacent to the stash by accident. Bought some got one free, it was the Jag.

A Humbrol Product : 1989 on the instruction leaflet. Seeing Roy's post offering to guide us through a neat conversion and improving leisure time thought I'd join this group building of the Airfix kit.

I'm commencing by filling the sink valleys caused by the locator hole columns inside the upper body (part 27).

The weather here in Perth, West Aust. was 37c and slightly humid today for the first day of the second cricket test against New Zealand. :)

A windy hot day today. Keep out of the sun after 9am. Pity the cricketers.

Smoothed out the sink marks. Found a ball point pen that appears to measure up for adaptation into headlight buckets.
