Nick C
Starting on a waterlined type 23 to accompany HMS Illustrious http://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/234986800-hms-illustrious/ It's going to be pretty much straight OOB with WEM PE and some crew as the Trumpeter kit looks pretty good as it is. First things first, glue the hull to a piece of wood To keep it on an even keel So it can be marked and waterlined Cheers Nick
Nick C
A bit of progress on HMS Kent, mostly around replacing moulded ladders with PE (there's more of them than I thought!!) and adding the hand and foot rails to the funnel to replace the moulded strip; And the mast Hopefully should progress a bit quicker now!! Jockster
Nice and tidy Nick, it's a lovely kit been a joy to build. Lots of useful stuff on Pauls HMS Somerset build and in case you haven't already spotted it, great pics of Richmond and Kent in the walkround pages! Nick C
Thanks Jockster I've seen your build and Paul's, both very inspirational and the pics of Kent and Richmond are a huge help! Only issue I've found so fa is that he WEM railings don't seem to have gaps where the ladders reach the decks, need to think about that as cutting and splicing can make them look untidy Cheers Nick
Paul E
Thanks Jockster I've seen your build and Paul's, both very inspirational and the pics of Kent and Richmond are a huge help! Only issue I've found so fa is that he WEM railings don't seem to have gaps where the ladders reach the decks, need to think about that as cutting and splicing can make them look untidy Cheers Nick Hi Nick I see you are off to a good start. Both you and Jockster work a lot faster than I do. So you found the problems with the railings then. The reason for this is that the Photo Etch is based on the PE for the Resin kit that WEM did for their resin kit of HMS Norfolk. There are a number of discrepancies particularly if you want to do the later ships of the class. I decided to cut and splice the PE railings on bridge roof and I have posted photos, I don't think it looks too bad. I found the biggest issue to be the railings around the Navigation radar platform on the mast. The PE is only suitable for the first three ships in the class which do not have a pedestal for the Radar Antenna to stand on. In the end I built my own using spares and detail wire, it is not as neat as it could be though. I am currently battling with the railings that support the the central superstructure, these also need a bit of butchering which will be the subject of my next posting. Anyway keep up the good work. I am looking forward to seeing Kent and Illustrious sailing together.

Jockster
Very nice indeed Nick, while you're at the early stages, check the Somerset build about the position of the forward tracker radar as you will want to do a bit of surgery on the bridge roof and now is a good time. Housesparrow
Did all of the photo etch seen in the images above come with the kit? Edited January 21, 2016 by Housesparrow
Jockster
Did all of the photo etch seen in the images above come with the kit? It's the White Ensign set, there is a fret of photoetch with the Trumpy kit but it is very, very fragile! Peter Halls Atlantic Models does the much more comprehensive set which used to be sold by WEM and includes all the railings, doors, helicopter, radar and Harpoon bits you could want. The main advantage over the Trumpeter etch is that the fore and main mast parts are much more robust. PaulE and myself are also using the Atlantic sets in our type 23 builds. I've used the Trumpy yards on my fore mast and have had to straighten them out repeatedly due to their extreme fragility! The Trumpy model of Kent is an excellent model and transforms into a beautiful build with the Atlantic set.
Jamie @ Sovereign Hobbies
There are 2 WEM sets for the 1/350 Type 23 on go now - one's much bigger than the other including rotor blades for the heli and so on
Darby
One thing to note, you probably already know anyway. The bridge door on the port side which is open needs to be white on the inner face.

The bridge door on the port side which is open needs to be white on the inner face. Thanks Darby, it's on the 'to do' list but I have to admit it had slipped my mind!! Inside of the hanger's finished, mostly the addition of a fire main, sprinklers and some railing and odd PE bits to busy it up - be difficult to see when it's attached! Paul E
One thing to note, you probably already know anyway. The bridge door on the port side which is open needs to be white on the inner face. And the wooden Air Conditioning door on the inside of the door frame with a spring mechanism designed to remove the fingers of the unwary.
Rob 1
Very good work, starting to look and detailed. Out of interest, what do you use for attaching p.e., CA type glue or PVA type?
Nick C
Very good work, starting to look and detailed. Out of interest, what do you use for attaching p.e., CA type glue or PVA type? Combination depending on the parts, for small individual pieces, like the folded ladder ends and the mast yards in the thread above that need to grip and hold pretty much straight away I use ZapaGap medium CA. For bits like railings and safety nets that need a bit of fiddling with (and generally go on after painting) I use PVA watered down 50/50. Nick C
Update from this weekend, bits of detailed painting of bulkhead fittings and then decals after a coat of Klear, using the Hawk Graphic decals as well as the kit ones and they really bring it to life; Bridge Midships Hanger And dry fit to hull; Pin wash, weathering and railing next.
